For a UK-focused shortlist, the Vauxhall Viva HC, Fiat 124 Spider and Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk II offer very different ways into classic-car ownership. Hagerty UK’s guide lists a £4,300 value for a Viva HC 4-door 1300 and £15,300 for a Golf GTI Mk II 8V, while a 2024 Classic Cars feature put cherished Fiat 124 Spiders at around £13,500 in its UK-market context. Those are dated, model-specific guide or reported figures—not promises of what a car will cost you. Europe has no single classic-car market, and purchase price is only part of the budget.
What “affordable” means in this shortlist
The strongest price comparisons available here are UK-market figures, so they should not be read as a Europe-wide ranking. Currency, local supply, condition and specification all affect what buyers actually pay. Hagerty says its valuation guides draw on real-world transactions and condition information, but an estimate is still not a guaranteed asking price or completed-sale result. Compare cars in the same market and condition before treating one figure as a budget.
Hagerty UK’s 2026 selection weighs value and driveability rather than predicting which cars will rise in price. Its guide data is stated to be correct on 11 January 2026. The Fiat figure below comes from a separate 2024 feature, so it is older and should not be treated as a current quote.
Three classics to consider
Vauxhall Viva HC: the everyday British classic
Hagerty UK lists £4,300 for a Vauxhall Viva HC 4-door 1300. The model was produced from 1971 to 1979, with nearly 650,000 built at Luton and Ellesmere Port, according to Hagerty. That mass-market history gives it a different appeal from a scarce sports car: it is a straightforward, familiar-looking classic rather than an exotic statement.

Hagerty characterizes the Viva HC as simple and relatively easy for an enthusiast to maintain, and says values have fallen in recent years. That is an attributed assessment, not a guarantee that any particular car will be inexpensive to keep. Condition and parts needs still matter, especially on an older vehicle.
Fiat 124 Spider: Italian style with a long production history
Classic Cars’ 2024 feature reported cherished Fiat 124 Spiders at around £13,500 in its UK-market context, and said the model was its most affordable “faller” among five selected cars: prices had declined 21% since 2019. Both figures describe that feature’s reporting, not today’s market or a forecast.

The Spider has a substantial international story: around 198,000 were built between 1966 and 1985, first by Fiat and later by Pininfarina, and around 80% of production went to the United States, according to the feature. It credits the design to Tom Tjaarda and describes twin-cam four-cylinder engines, four-wheel disc brakes and later five-speed gearboxes. Those details help explain the car’s appeal beyond its looks.
Buying carefully is essential. Classic Cars flags rust around the doors, sills and floor pans, electrical challenges, and trim parts that are becoming harder to find. Inspect the specific car and check parts availability before committing; a low purchase price can be outweighed by corrosion repairs or hard-to-source components.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk II: a practical hot hatch
Hagerty UK lists £15,300 for the Golf GTI Mk II 8-valve and £16,600 for the 16-valve version. For comparison, it gives £21,500 as the “excellent” value for a Mk I Golf GTI 1600. These are Hagerty UK guide figures, with its data stated correct on 11 January 2026—not equivalent condition-for-condition sale prices.
The Mk II retained fuel injection, grew into a larger body and improved its handling, according to Hagerty. A 139bhp 16-valve engine arrived in 1986. The two listed variants make specification especially important when comparing ads: the 16-valve guide value is higher, and a car’s condition and originality can shift its real-world price.
Rank #4
A higher-priced comparator: Alfa Romeo Spider 2000 Veloce
Not every desirable European classic in this group is inexpensive. Hagerty UK lists £21,200 as the “excellent” value for the Alfa Romeo Spider 2000 Veloce and reports a five-year price change of -8.6%. That makes it a useful price comparator, not evidence that all Alfa Spiders are affordable.
Hagerty describes the 105/115-series Spider as having a twin-cam engine, five-speed gearbox, independent suspension and four-wheel servo-assisted disc brakes. It also points to parts interchangeability and UK specialists. Those features may help an owner assess support, but they do not remove the need to inspect a particular car or budget for its upkeep.

How to compare prices without misreading them
- Match the specification: compare the same model year, engine, trim and transmission where possible. The Golf GTI Mk II 8V and 16V, for example, have separate guide figures.
- Match condition and originality: a guide value for a stated condition is not interchangeable with a price for a project car, modified example or restored car.
- Keep geography and currency attached: the figures here are UK-market references. They do not establish what a comparable car costs in another European country.
- Identify what the number represents: distinguish a guide valuation from an asking price and a completed sale. Hagerty’s valuation resources describe guides informed by private sales, dealer transactions and auction results, but that does not make a single estimate definitive.
- Budget beyond purchase: account for inspection, corrosion, mechanical work, parts availability and ongoing maintenance. The Fiat’s known inspection concerns illustrate why the cheapest listing is not necessarily the least expensive ownership choice.
Which one fits your priorities?
The Viva HC is the lowest guide figure in this UK-focused selection and suits a buyer drawn to a simple everyday classic. The Fiat 124 Spider makes the strongest case for open-top Italian character, with its design and technical specification, but deserves particular scrutiny for rust, electrics and trim. The Golf GTI Mk II offers a sporting hatchback in distinct 8-valve and 16-valve versions. The Alfa Spider 2000 Veloce is included as a higher-priced alternative for buyers interested in its engineering and support network.
These cars are candidates to investigate, not a universal list of Europe’s cheapest classics. Get a condition assessment and compare local examples of the exact variant before deciding what is affordable for your finances.
