Membership lasts up to five years. You still need acceptable airport identification, and some travelers—such as qualifying active TWIC holders—may not need a separate PreCheck application.
What TSA PreCheck is—and what it does not guarantee
TSA PreCheck is a TSA-administered, identity-vetted expedited screening program. Its practical value depends on whether your airports and airline itinerary offer access and whether the service is operationally available for your trip. It is not a guarantee of a particular screening experience or access on every flight.
TSA’s available guidance does not establish a complete current list of participating airlines, screening procedures or rules for children. Check TSA’s current PreCheck information before relying on a specific benefit or assuming a child can use the lane with you.
How much does TSA PreCheck cost?
The current 2026 enrollment and renewal prices are not established here. Check TSA’s live PreCheck page or the provider you choose immediately before applying; fees and provider details can change.

The often-quoted $85 figure is not a current price confirmation. A 2013 TSA fee-development report records $85.00 as an original application-program fee calculation and explains that TSA reviews fees and can publish later changes. For a personal-finance decision, consider the full cost over the membership period, not just the application fee. Include travel to the enrollment appointment and the time required to attend it. Compare those costs with how often you fly on eligible itineraries and whether another credential you already hold offers a route to PreCheck access.

How long does TSA PreCheck last?
After a successful application, eligibility and the underlying security threat assessment are valid for a maximum of five years, unless a disqualification occurs sooner. TSA says members may renew at the end of that period by submitting the required application and paying the applicable fee. TSA fee-development report
How to apply
TSA’s enrollment-center guidance lists CLEAR, IDEMIA and Telos as enrollment providers. TSA recommends pre-enrolling online with the provider you select to make the in-person appointment faster. - Confirm eligibility. Review TSA’s current PreCheck eligibility information.
- Choose a provider. Use TSA’s enrollment-center tool to find a listed provider and verify its location and hours.
- Pre-enroll online. Complete the selected provider’s online steps before the appointment, if available.
- Attend the in-person appointment. Bring the identity and citizenship or residency documents the provider currently requests.
- Add your Known Traveler Number. Once issued, enter the KTN in each airline reservation and in your airline profile, following the airline’s instructions.
What ID do you need at the airport?
PreCheck membership does not replace the identification requirement for airport screening. TSA says that, as of May 7, 2025, state-issued driver’s licenses and IDs that are not REAL ID compliant are no longer accepted as valid airport identification. TSA lists alternatives including passports, permanent-resident cards, DHS trusted-traveler cards and TWIC cards. Do you need a separate application if you already have another credential?
Active TWIC cardholders
Qualifying active TWIC holders may receive PreCheck access without a separate enrollment or additional fee. Eligible holders enter the TWIC Credential Identification Number in the KTN field; they do not receive a separate KTN. Eligibility depends on citizenship or residency, an active credential and TSA requirements. TSA TWIC FAQ

Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI or other credentials
If you already hold Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI or another trusted-traveler credential, check its current TSA PreCheck implications before paying for separate enrollment. The specific eligibility and KTN instructions depend on the credential; do not assume that every credential works the same way.

There is no single break-even point without a confirmed current fee and your travel pattern. Weigh the total five-year cost against the number of trips on participating itineraries, the time and transportation cost of an appointment, the availability of service at airports you use, renewal convenience and any existing credential that may already qualify you. If your travel rarely intersects with participating service, the fee and appointment may be harder to justify; frequent eligible travel can make the convenience more valuable.
