Stellantis Stock: Key Risks and Factors Investors Should Understand

Stellantis’ FY2025 results raise questions about cash generation, tariffs and execution. Here are the company-specific risks and indicators investors should track.

Stellantis presents a high-stakes turnaround question, not a simple growth story: its FY2025 results showed a large loss and negative industrial free cash flow, while management forecast a return to growth and improving cash flow. Those figures describe the business, not whether STLA shares are attractively priced. Investors need to weigh the company’s reset, trade exposure, product execution and cash demands against a current share price and valuation.

What the latest reported results show

Stellantis N.V. trades as STLA on the NYSE, STLAM on Euronext Milan and STLAP on Euronext Paris. Its FY2025 results, released in 2026, mark a sharp deterioration in reported earnings and cash flow. The company attributed its €22.3 billion net loss largely to unusual charges associated with a major strategy reset, but those charges were real costs to the business; adjusted operating results and cash flow offer different, complementary views rather than grounds to dismiss the loss.

Measure FY2025 reported result
Net revenues €153.5 billion, down 2% from FY2024; Stellantis reported foreign-exchange headwinds and H1 pricing declines as factors.
Net income (loss) €22.3 billion loss, with €25.4 billion in full-year unusual charges, primarily reflecting the strategic reset.
Adjusted operating result €842 million loss; adjusted operating margin was negative 0.5%.
Industrial free cash flow Negative €4.5 billion.
Industrial available liquidity €46 billion at 2025 year-end.

These are company-reported FY2025 figures, not current market data. The €25.4 billion in unusual charges helps explain the size of the net loss, but does not make it safe to treat the loss as wholly one-off: operating performance was also negative, and industrial free cash flow measures cash demands that an adjusted earnings figure cannot answer.

Why the strategy reset matters

Stellantis said it was changing its product plan and electric-vehicle supply chain to better reflect customer preferences and shifting regulatory conditions. The reset included €25.4 billion of FY2025 unusual charges. The company said about €6.5 billion of those charges were expected to be cash payments over the following four years; its FY2026 outlook also included about €2 billion in payments related to charges recorded in H2 2025.

The reset creates a two-sided risk. If demand or regulation changes faster than the company can adjust, its product mix and investments may be poorly matched to buyers. But changing direction also costs money and requires successful execution across development, sourcing, factories and launches. Investors should distinguish the announced plan from evidence that it is producing profitable sales.

Which risks could keep the turnaround from working?

Tariffs and trade policy

Stellantis’ 2025 Annual Report/Form 20-F identifies tariffs and duties, particularly in North America, as a material exposure. Depending on policy implementation and sourcing, higher duties can raise production costs or consumer prices, reduce demand and shipments, affect component and raw-material availability, and complicate production and launch planning. The filing cites the 2026 Jeep Cherokee, produced in Toluca, Mexico, as a model whose profitability was expected to be significantly affected by the applicability and magnitude of tariffs. The ultimate impact depends on policy, sourcing choices and the company’s ability to absorb costs or pass them on without weakening demand.

Rank #2

Product demand, electrification and regulation

The company identifies its ability to predict demand for electrified vehicles, shipments and attractive products as important to performance. Misjudging the pace or mix of electrification could leave Stellantis with products customers do not want or a portfolio that does not fit regulatory conditions. A product-plan change can address a mismatch, but brings transition costs and execution risk. The available evidence does not establish which powertrain mix will ultimately prevail.

Launches, quality and competition

New models and improved execution are central to management’s turnaround case. The key question is whether launches can deliver appealing products at competitive prices, on time and at profitable volumes, while quality improves. Stellantis’ annual report also identifies competition, including consolidation and new entrants, as a risk. A strong launch announcement is not the same as successful performance in sales, margins or warranty costs.

Cash generation and financing

Liquidity is a stock measured at a point in time; free cash flow is a flow that shows whether the business generated or used cash over a period. The €46 billion of industrial available liquidity at 2025 year-end therefore needs to be read alongside negative FY2025 industrial free cash flow and the planned cash payments for reset charges. The board suspended the 2026 dividend and authorized up to €5 billion of hybrid bonds, actions that underscore a focus on preserving financial flexibility. The disclosures do not guarantee that liquidity will remain adequate under every operating scenario.

Warranty claims and other contingencies

The annual report lists warranty and product-liability claims, environmental claims and investigations, and related contingencies among potential risks. Stellantis also described a changed estimation process for contractual warranty provisions as part of the reset materials. Quality performance and warranty expense are therefore relevant to monitor; these disclosures alone do not establish that any provision is inadequate or predict the outcome of a particular claim.

Foreign exchange, the economy and supply

Stellantis attributed part of its FY2025 revenue decline to strong foreign-exchange headwinds. Its annual report also identifies economic conditions, demand cyclicality, interest rates, exchange rates, raw-material and component shortages, labor relations and local political conditions as potential influences. They can compound one another: higher borrowing costs can affect vehicle affordability, currency movements can change reported results and costs, and supply constraints can limit shipments.

What management expects—and what could derail it

Stellantis’ stated FY2026 outlook was mid-single-digit percentage growth in net revenues, a low-single-digit adjusted operating income margin, and year-over-year improvement in industrial free cash flow. Management expected positive industrial free cash flow in 2027. These are targets, not assured results. The company linked progress to product launches, execution and aligning its portfolio with customer demand; weaker volumes or pricing, tariffs, cost pressure, launch problems or working-capital needs could prevent it from meeting the outlook.

What investors should monitor next

Use subsequent company filings to test the turnaround through reported outcomes, not just targets. Track:

  • Net revenues and shipments by region, including whether volumes and pricing support growth.
  • Adjusted operating margin alongside industrial free cash flow, so earnings improvement is not mistaken for cash generation.
  • Liquidity and cash payments associated with the reset.
  • Tariff costs, sourcing changes and their effects on North American profitability.
  • Launch performance, inventory, product quality, warranty provisions and claims.
  • Progress against FY2026 guidance and the stated 2027 positive industrial free cash flow expectation.

Stellantis’ investor-relations page lists 2026 interim reports, but the figures summarized here do not include their results. For an investment decision made now, consult the latest interim filing and a dated market quote rather than treating FY2025 data or the company’s outlook as current performance.

Company risk is not the same as stock value

A company can improve while its shares are expensive, or struggle while a low valuation already reflects much of the risk. This evidence does not establish a current share price, valuation, peer comparison or personalized buy-or-sell conclusion. To assess the stock itself, pair updated financials with a dated price and compare valuation on consistent earnings or cash-flow measures; peer analysis should also account for regional exposure, vehicle mix, margins, liquidity, tariff exposure and warranty costs.
