Cameco vs. Uranium ETFs: Which Offers Better Exposure to Uranium?

Cameco is one operator; URA and URNM offer baskets with different uranium and nuclear-sector exposure. Compare their mandates, dated Cameco weights and reported expenses.

Neither Cameco nor a uranium ETF is a guaranteed stand-in for the spot uranium price, and the cited disclosures do not establish which will outperform. Cameco offers concentrated exposure to one company operating across uranium production and other parts of the nuclear fuel cycle. An ETF spreads exposure across a basket, but the basket can still hold a large Cameco position and may include businesses beyond uranium mining. The better fit depends on whether you want one company’s fortunes, a broader nuclear-related basket, or a fund with a stated physical-uranium component.

What is the difference between Cameco stock and URA or URNM?

Buying Cameco shares means owning equity in a single operating company. Buying URA or URNM means owning shares in a fund designed to track a sector index or investment approach. The funds hold multiple securities, but their mandates and holdings differ; neither is simply a claim on uranium held in the ground or a direct bet on the daily spot price.

What does owning Cameco expose you to?

Cameco is not only a uranium producer. Its 2025 annual information form describes activities spanning exploration, uranium production, refining, conversion into UO2 and UF6, and CANDU fuel manufacturing. It also describes Cameco’s investment in Westinghouse and in GLE enrichment technology. That wider business mix means the share price can reflect developments in several parts of the nuclear fuel cycle, as well as company-specific execution and financial factors. (Cameco annual reports)

In its 2025 AIF, Cameco said its tier-one production accounted for 15% of world production in 2025 and listed approximately 433 million pounds of proven and probable uranium reserves. These are company-reported figures tied to the stated reporting period, not measures of future shareholder returns. (Cameco annual reports)

Cameco reported 21.0 million pounds of uranium production attributable to its share for 2025. Its 2025 annual report gave a 2026 production plan of 19.5–21.5 million pounds attributable to its share. The 2026 range is a company plan, not a guaranteed result. (Cameco annual reports)

Contracts matter too. Cameco disclosed that its average realized uranium price improved in 2025 as prices under base-escalated and market-related contracts increased. Contract terms and delivery timing mean Cameco’s realized prices need not move in lockstep with spot uranium prices, and its share price also reflects production, costs and other business developments. How does URA differ from URNM?

URA: uranium plus nuclear-component businesses

Global X says URA seeks results that correspond generally, before fees and expenses, to the price and yield performance of the Solactive Global Uranium & Nuclear Components Total Return Index. Its description includes firms involved in uranium extraction, refining and exploration, as well as nuclear-industry equipment manufacturing. This broader theme can add exposure beyond miners, but it does not make the fund a pure uranium-price tracker. (Global X URA)

Global X reported 58 holdings and a 0.69% total expense ratio in October 2026. It reported Cameco at 21.80% of assets on October 2, 2026. These are dated issuer figures; the holdings are subject to change. (Global X URA)

URNM: miners and physical uranium

Sprott says URNM seeks to invest at least 80% of its total assets in securities of the VettaFi Global Uranium Mining Index (URNMX). The index description in Sprott’s Q1 2026 factsheet covers companies with at least 50% of assets devoted to uranium mining—including mining, exploration, development and production—or companies holding physical uranium, owning royalties or supporting the industry through other activities. The 80% policy is an investment policy tied to the index; it does not mean 80% of the fund is physical uranium. (Sprott Q1 2026 URNM factsheet)

That factsheet reported a 0.75% total annual operating expense ratio and a 17.63% physical uranium industry weighting as of March 31, 2026. Separately, Sprott’s issuer page listed Cameco at 19.23% and a 0.75% net total expense ratio as of September 9, 2026. The figures describe distinct disclosures and dates. (Sprott URNM)

Does URNM own physical uranium?

Sprott’s Q1 2026 factsheet reported a 17.63% physical uranium industry weighting at March 31, 2026, so the fund’s stated exposure included a physical-uranium component in that snapshot. The figure is not a permanent allocation, nor does it mean the entire fund is backed by uranium. The rest of the portfolio and its composition should be checked in the current holdings and fund documents. (Sprott Q1 2026 URNM factsheet)

Which uranium exposure may fit your priorities?

  • Consider Cameco if you specifically want exposure to one operator and are prepared for company-level risks, including production, contracting, costs, regulation and execution across multiple business lines.
  • Consider URA if you want a fund basket spanning uranium-related businesses and nuclear-component companies, and are comfortable with its stated expense ratio and meaningful dated Cameco weight.
  • Consider URNM if a miner-focused approach with a disclosed physical-uranium component is closer to your goal, and you accept that its holdings still include individual-company exposure and a stated fund expense.
  • Compare the latest documents if your decision depends on a specific holding, physical uranium allocation, index rule or fee. Snapshot figures can change and the Cameco percentages cited here come from different dates.

Owning several companies through an ETF can reduce reliance on any one issuer relative to buying only Cameco, but it does not eliminate risk. Holdings may move together when uranium and nuclear-sector conditions change, and both funds had a substantial Cameco position in their cited snapshots.

Do Cameco shares track the uranium price?

Not mechanically. Cameco’s contract structure affects when and at what terms it sells uranium; its 2025 disclosure that average realized prices improved as prices under base-escalated and market-related contracts increased illustrates that company revenue reflects contract terms, not simply a spot quote. Production volumes, operating costs, regulation and its other businesses also influence results. URA and URNM likewise hold companies and, in URNM’s case, reported physical-uranium exposure; their share prices are not guaranteed to mirror spot uranium.

No evidence here establishes that Cameco, URA or URNM will outperform over a particular period. This is a choice about the type and concentration of exposure, not a reliable way to predict returns. Consider the latest issuer prospectus, holdings and fee disclosures alongside your own time horizon and risk tolerance; this is general educational information, not individualized financial or tax advice.
