Neither a U.S. dollar payment stablecoin nor a money market fund is simply a safer, higher-paying version of the other. A money market fund gives you mutual-fund shares in a portfolio; a stablecoin gives you a digital token governed by issuer terms and applicable law. Funds may distribute investment income, while reserve income does not automatically go to stablecoin holders. A token’s peg and a fund’s goal of keeping a $1.00 share price are not guarantees, and neither product is an FDIC-insured bank deposit.

The better fit depends on what you need: fund access and investment income, or a transferable digital token and its particular redemption arrangements. This comparison covers U.S. money market funds and U.S. dollar payment stablecoins; rules and protections differ in other jurisdictions.

What do you own in each product?

Question Money market fund U.S. dollar payment stablecoin
What the holder owns Shares in a mutual fund whose portfolio and operating terms are set by its mandate and prospectus. A digital token issued under the issuer’s terms and applicable law—not a share in the issuer’s reserve portfolio.
Where the value comes from The value of the fund’s portfolio; many funds seek to maintain a stable net asset value (NAV), commonly $1.00 per share. A dollar peg supported by reserve management and redemption arrangements.
How income reaches the holder Portfolio income is reflected in distributions or yield measures, after applicable expenses. Reserve assets may earn income, but that income does not automatically pass to token holders.
How you access it Through a fund or investment account, subject to fund and account terms. Through a wallet or service; direct issuer redemption may be limited to eligible intermediaries, leaving some holders to use a secondary market.

The SEC explains that money market funds invest in high-quality short-term debt and seek—but do not guarantee—a stable NAV, typically $1.00. Fund types and mandates differ, so a government fund and a prime fund should not be assumed to hold the same assets or carry the same risks. SEC Investor Bulletin: Focus on Money Market Funds

Some reserve categories under the GENIUS Act include short-term Treasury securities and qualifying government money market fund securities. That overlap in potential underlying assets does not make a token equivalent to fund shares: the holder’s legal claim, redemption route, and risks are different. GENIUS Act, Public Law 119-27

Which one pays a higher yield?

There is no universal winner. A fund’s yield changes with short-term rates, its portfolio, share class, and expenses. A stablecoin’s reserve income is not itself a holder return; any return the holder receives depends on the issuer’s terms or a separate third-party arrangement. Without naming specific products and comparing dated, like-for-like figures, a yield ranking would be misleading.

  • For a fund, check the current yield measure, its date and annualization convention, expense ratio, share class, and whether the quoted figure is before or after expenses. Compare funds with the same type of mandate and account context.
  • For a stablecoin, identify who pays any reward, what activity qualifies, whether the rate can change, and what conditions or risks apply. A third-party reward is not automatically issuer interest, a contractual guarantee, or a return from the reserve assets.

The GENIUS Act prohibits a permitted payment stablecoin issuer from paying a holder interest or yield—whether in cash, tokens, or other consideration—solely in connection with holding, using, or retaining the payment stablecoin. Do not confuse this rule with every promotion or third-party arrangement; assess the payer and terms rather than treating all rewards as the same kind of yield. The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s April 4, 2025 statement concerned only its defined category of “Covered Stablecoins,” not all stablecoins or yield-bearing stablecoins. What risks can cause a loss or limit access?

Money market fund risks

A stable NAV is an objective, not a promise. A fund can “break the buck,” meaning its share price falls below $1.00, and investors can lose money. Money market fund shares are not FDIC-insured. Portfolio credit quality, interest rates, liquidity, expenses, and the fund’s redemption terms can all matter; consult the specific fund’s prospectus and current materials rather than inferring safety from the name “money market.” SEC Investor Bulletin

Payment stablecoin risks

A peg is not a guarantee that every holder can redeem instantly at par. The practical value and availability of a token can be affected by the issuer, reserve quality and disclosure, custodians or banking access, redemption eligibility, and secondary-market liquidity or spreads. Transfers add operational risks, including network outages or congestion, service or exchange interruptions, cyberattacks, and lost or compromised wallet keys. Issuer policies may also include controls such as freezing or blocking tokens. A token is not an FDIC-insured deposit.

The GENIUS Act establishes reserve and redemption requirements for permitted payment stablecoin issuers, but that does not establish that every token falls under the law or remove market, custody, or technology risks. Before relying on a particular token, check its issuer’s reserve disclosures, redemption policy, fees, supported networks, and any pause or freeze provisions.

How do redemption and day-to-day access differ?

Fund shares are bought and redeemed through the fund or an investment account under that fund’s and account provider’s rules. Review the prospectus and account terms for transaction cutoffs, settlement, fees, minimums, and any liquidity provisions; availability can differ by fund and platform.

A stablecoin can be held or transferred through a wallet or service, but the ability to send a token is not the same as a right to redeem it directly with the issuer. Direct issuer redemption may be restricted to designated or eligible intermediaries. Other holders may need to sell through an exchange or another secondary market, where price, spreads, liquidity, and service availability can differ from par. For a token, verify the precise route you can use—not just the issuer’s general promise to redeem—including your eligibility, fees, supported chain, custody arrangement, and what happens if a service or network is unavailable. For a fund, confirm the account actually offers the share class and redemption terms you intend to use.

What does the GENIUS Act change, and when?

Congress enacted the GENIUS Act as Public Law 119-27 on July 18, 2025. It sets a framework for permitted payment stablecoin issuers, including reserve categories and clear procedures for timely redemption of outstanding payment stablecoins. Its statutory effective date is the earlier of January 18, 2027, or 120 days after relevant implementing regulations are issued. Enactment and implementation are distinct; the Act’s requirements should not be treated as proof that every token already complies. Public Law 119-27 · Current preliminary 12 U.S.C. Chapter 56

The SEC staff statement dated April 4, 2025 is narrower than the Act: it describes a category of dollar-referenced, reserve-backed tokens intended for one-for-one issuer minting and redemption, supported by low-risk liquid reserve assets. It expressly does not resolve the status of every stablecoin. Do not treat that statement as a blanket SEC conclusion about all tokens. SEC Division of Corporation Finance statement

How should you choose between them?

  • Consider a money market fund when you want mutual-fund shares and can evaluate a particular fund’s mandate, current yield, expenses, account access, and redemption terms.
  • Consider a payment stablecoin when you specifically need a digital token for transfers or another supported use, and understand the issuer, redemption route, custody, network, and market risks.
  • Do not choose on the headline rate alone. Compare named products on the same date, account for fees and access constraints, and distinguish a fund’s investment yield from a stablecoin reward with different conditions and risks.

A 2026 SEC-filed summary prospectus for ProShares GENIUS Money Market ETF illustrates why fund-specific documents matter: it warns that investors could lose money, that the fund cannot guarantee a $1.00 share price, and that its restriction to GENIUS-eligible assets may produce lower yield than broader money market fund mandates. That disclosure is about this fund, not a general finding about all money market funds. ProShares GENIUS Money Market ETF summary prospectus, filed January 29, 2026
