For 2023, New York City-based stylist Michaela Snavely described a move away from thin, mirrored wraparound sunglasses toward oversized metal and acetate frames. The shift was a stylist’s fashion read—not a measured ranking of what shoppers bought or a forecast for 2026.
What the stylist said was changing
In a May 17, 2023 report by Rolling Stone, syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment, Snavely contrasted the slim, mirrored wraparounds associated with Y2K styling with larger frames in metal and acetate. She described the newer direction as oversized and retro-inspired, but updated with contemporary design.
The report’s most concrete runway example was Acne Studios’ Fall 2023 ready-to-wear collection: Snavely said 20 of 51 looks included eyewear. That is her attributed observation about one runway collection, not a statistic about the sunglasses market.

Oversized and butterfly silhouettes
Large frames were central to Snavely’s account of the shift. Oversized butterfly sunglasses were among the report’s examples, alongside eyewear from Miu Miu, Loewe, Acne Studios and Celine. Those names illustrate the 2023 coverage; they do not establish that a particular model remains available today.

Retro references with modern design
The stylist’s broader description was oversized, Art Deco- and retro-inspired shapes with contemporary design. The appeal in this framing is the contrast: a silhouette that recalls an earlier era, finished in a way that feels current to the 2023 trend story.
Metal frames
Metal was presented as a sleek, contemporary option. In the roundup, it formed part of the move toward larger frames rather than the thin mirrored wraparounds Snavely said were losing ground.

Colorful and patterned acetate
Acetate offered the report’s clearest route to color and pattern. That makes it a styling distinction, not evidence of different protection, durability or optical performance.
Simple, timeless sunglasses
The trend story also left room for uncomplicated, classic sunglasses. A trend roundup need not imply that every wearer should replace a familiar shape: simple styles were included alongside the more conspicuous retro and oversized options.

Why 2023 trend lists did not all match
A separate June 5, 2023 roundup from eyewear retailer Pretavoir covered rimless, cat-eye, gold-rim, oversized, sporty wraparound and black-square styles. Its list differed from Rolling Stone’s, which grouped the looks around oversized, retro-modern, metal, colorful or acetate, and timeless-simple sunglasses. The variation is a reminder that these were editorial trend selections, not a single agreed ranking of the year’s most popular frames.
For a reader comparing the styles, the useful distinctions are silhouette (oversized, wraparound or classic), frame material (metal or acetate), and styling reference (retro or contemporary). The fashion reports do not establish which option offers better UV protection, comfort, durability or optical performance; those require product-specific information.
