SpaceX Acquired a Former Air China Boeing 737-800—But Its Mission Is Still Unknown

A SpaceX-linked company acquired a former Air China Boeing 737-800, but the aircraft’s exact purpose remains unknown. A corporate shuttle is plausible; Starlink, military and testbed claims are unconfirmed.

Yes—this is a real SpaceX-linked aircraft story, but the most accurate version is more specific than “Elon Musk bought a plane.” A company called Falcon Aviation Holdings LLC was reported as the owner of a former Air China Boeing 737-800, registered in the United States as N154TS. The aircraft was photographed at Los Angeles International Airport in January 2024 in a distinctive gray-and-black livery.

What SpaceX intends to do with the jet has not been publicly established. A corporate shuttle is the most straightforward explanation; logistics or aerospace testing are possible, but unconfirmed.

What SpaceX actually acquired

The aircraft is a Boeing 737-800 Next Generation, a narrow-body airliner that reportedly entered service in 2002. It was formerly operated by Air China and was reportedly known under the Chinese registration B-2671. Aviation reports said it ended Air China service in 2022 and was later stored in Lake Charles, Louisiana, although the exact ownership and storage timeline has not been consistently documented.

By January 2024, reports identified the aircraft as N154TS. It was seen arriving at LAX wearing a dark gray-and-black paint scheme rather than an airline livery. The jet was approximately 21 years old at the time, based on the reported 2002 service date.

Several reports identify the aircraft as N154TS, including coverage from Yahoo/Business Insider, A21, The War Zone and Sky Budget. One report used N800TS, but that appears to be an error because the same report contains inconsistent registration details.

Did Elon Musk personally buy the plane?

Not according to the ownership information reported at the time. The listed owner was Falcon Aviation Holdings LLC, whose address was associated with SpaceX’s headquarters in Hawthorne, California.

That makes “SpaceX acquired a 737” reasonable shorthand, but it does not establish that Elon Musk personally owns the aircraft or that the jet is his personal plane. It also does not prove that SpaceX bought the aircraft directly from Air China. Air China was the previous operator; the aircraft may have changed hands through a lessor, broker, storage company or aircraft-trading firm.

The aircraft was also associated with a different Falcon-named entity than some aircraft linked to Musk or SpaceX. Those similarly named companies should not automatically be treated as the same owner.

When did the story become public?

The unusual aircraft drew attention after it was photographed at LAX in January 2024. Reports appeared mainly between January 25 and January 31, 2024. It is therefore not evidence of a newly announced 2026 purchase.

Some coverage contains a purported August 2024 purchase date, but that conflicts with the January reporting and should not be treated as confirmed without an authoritative registration-history record.

Why would SpaceX want a Boeing 737?

1. A company shuttle

The most practical explanation is employee and guest transportation. SpaceX operates across geographically separated locations, including its Hawthorne headquarters and facilities connected with launch and spacecraft operations. A 737 can carry substantially more people, luggage and equipment than a typical executive jet.

A dedicated aircraft could move employees, contractors, customers or invited guests between company sites on a flexible schedule. Operating an older used 737 also need not imply that it is a luxury or personal aircraft; it may simply be a capacity-focused company asset.

That explanation remains a possibility, not a confirmed SpaceX statement. The company has not publicly identified N154TS as an employee shuttle in the reporting available for this story.

2. A logistics aircraft

The 737 could potentially support internal logistics, particularly if its cabin were reconfigured to carry equipment or a mixture of passengers and cargo. However, the available reports do not establish that the aircraft became a freighter, retained a passenger cabin or received a particular interior conversion.

3. An airborne testbed

Commercial airliners can be used to test communications equipment, sensors, avionics and other airborne systems. That makes a test role technically possible for a company involved in spacecraft, launch systems and satellite communications.

But no reliable report identifies a payload, antenna array, sensor installation, named test program, special modification or test-range authorization associated with N154TS. The testbed theory should therefore remain clearly labeled as speculation.

4. Starlink or military work

Some commentary suggested a connection with Starlink logistics or specialized aerospace operations. There is no reliable evidence in the available coverage proving that the aircraft was assigned to Starlink, a military project, surveillance work or a secret aerospace program.

Why the livery attracted so much attention

The gray-and-black two-tone paint scheme made the aircraft look unlike a conventional airline jet. Its appearance prompted comparisons with specialized government and military 737s, which helped fuel speculation about a classified or unusual mission.

Paint alone cannot establish an aircraft’s purpose. The livery may reflect SpaceX’s visual identity, a desire to avoid airline branding, privacy considerations or simply a corporate repaint. Without evidence of special equipment or a documented mission, the aircraft’s appearance is not proof of a military role.

Was the aircraft certified to fly?

One report said the FAA had issued an airworthiness certificate and that the aircraft was considered flyable. The precise certificate chronology and current status are not clear from the available coverage. The FAA aircraft registry is the appropriate source for current registration information.

“Flyable” should not be confused with “available for unrestricted passenger service.” That would depend on its maintenance, configuration, certification, operating authority and the status of any work performed after its airline career.

Why public flight trackers may not show much

Reports said the aircraft’s tracking information may have been restricted or suppressed. Public flight-tracking services can also have incomplete coverage, missing data feeds or limited information for certain airports and transponders.

As a result, the absence of visible flights does not prove that SpaceX sold the aircraft, grounded it or abandoned it. Tracker silence is not a reliable substitute for current registry, maintenance or operator records.

What remains unknown

  • The purchase price.
  • The exact acquisition date.
  • Whether the aircraft was bought directly from Air China or through another owner.
  • Its current cabin layout and maintenance condition.
  • Whether it received specialized equipment or interior modifications.
  • Whether SpaceX operates it directly or through another aviation company.
  • Its current flight schedule and operational status.

The bottom line

The evidence supports a careful conclusion: a SpaceX-linked company acquired or operated a former Air China Boeing 737-800 identified as N154TS, and the aircraft was publicly spotted at LAX in January 2024. It was not established as Elon Musk’s personal aircraft, a confirmed Starlink plane or a converted freighter.

A corporate shuttle is the most ordinary and plausible explanation, while logistics and testing remain possible. Until SpaceX or authoritative aviation records provide more detail, the aircraft’s exact mission remains undisclosed.
