Southwest’s limited-time Companion Pass promotion is no longer open to new bookings. Members had to register and buy qualifying flights by August 6, 2026, then complete travel by November 18, 2026. The airline’s August 3 announcement also gives conflicting dates for when the promotional pass can be used, so eligible members should check the offer terms or their Rapid Rewards account before booking.
Can you still qualify for the 2026 offer?
No. The purchase deadline has passed, and a new booking cannot qualify under this promotion. Southwest announced the offer on August 3, 2026; members had to register and purchase by August 6, 2026, with qualifying travel completed by November 18, 2026. Southwest’s announcement is the source for those offer deadlines.
What the promotion required
For the limited offer, an existing or newly enrolled Rapid Rewards member had to register, then purchase either one qualifying round trip or two qualifying one-way flights within the offer window. Southwest said qualifying purchases could be made with Rapid Rewards points, Cash + Points, or another eligible form of payment. The traveler also had to complete the required travel by November 18, 2026. A round trip counted as the qualifying purchase route, but registration and both the purchase and travel deadlines still applied.
When can eligible members use the promotional pass?
Southwest’s August 3 announcement states two different use windows: the main text says January 5 through March 3, 2027, while footnote 1 says January 1 through March 7, 2027. Because those dates conflict, do not rely on one window without checking. Members who qualified should consult the complete promotion terms or the dates shown in their Rapid Rewards account for the controlling period.

What a Companion Pass covers—and what it does not
A Companion Pass lets the member designate one person to travel with them on eligible Southwest flights booked by the member. The member books their own flight first; the companion reservation must be made through Southwest and match the member’s flights and dates. Companion travel depends on seat availability, even though Southwest’s terms say there are no blackout dates. Southwest’s Companion Pass page explains the benefit, and its Rapid Rewards Terms & Conditions set out the applicable rules.
“Free” refers to the companion’s airline fare, not every trip expense. Taxes and fees still apply; Southwest said they start at $5.60 one-way for this offer. The pass cannot be added to Southwest Vacations, Getaways by Southwest, Group Travel, charter flights, interline itineraries, or nonrevenue travel.

How the promotion differed from the standard Companion Pass
The short-term offer was a separate qualification path, not a change to Southwest’s usual annual requirements. The table compares the limited 2026 promotion with the standard qualification described in Southwest’s terms.
| Feature | 2026 promotional offer | Standard Companion Pass |
|---|---|---|
| How to qualify | Register and purchase one qualifying round trip or two qualifying one-way flights. | Earn 135,000 qualifying points or fly 100 qualifying one-way segments in a calendar year, according to Southwest’s terms. |
| Purchase or earning window | Purchase by August 6, 2026, after registering. | Qualification is based on points or qualifying segments earned in a calendar year. |
| Travel requirement | Complete travel by November 18, 2026. | Not stated as a separate travel-completion deadline in the cited qualification summary. |
| Pass validity | Southwest’s release conflicts: its main text lists January 5–March 3, 2027, and footnote 1 lists January 1–March 7, 2027. Check the offer terms or account. | Not stated in the cited qualification summary. |
| Qualifying payment | Southwest said qualifying purchase could use Rapid Rewards points, Cash + Points, or another eligible form of payment. | Qualification depends on qualifying points or segments; points exclusions apply under Southwest’s terms. |
For standard qualification, Southwest excludes several kinds of points, including purchased points, member-to-member transfers, reward-flight points, enrollment points, tier and flight bonuses, most promotion bonuses, and some partner or vacation-package earnings. Check the current terms for the full rules before relying on a points balance to qualify.

What to do if you qualified
- Sign in to your Rapid Rewards account and check whether the promotional pass has been credited and what validity dates the account displays.
- Confirm the governing date range in the complete offer terms, given the discrepancy in the announcement.
- Book the member’s eligible flight first, then make the companion reservation through Southwest for the same flights and dates.
- Budget for the companion’s taxes and fees, and review the itinerary restrictions before completing the booking.
What to do if you missed the promotion
This expired offer cannot be claimed through a new booking. Travelers who still want a Companion Pass can review Southwest’s current standard qualification rules and confirm which points and flight segments count; the promotional round-trip route and deadlines do not replace the annual requirements.
