Elon Musk announced in March 2025 that xAI acquired X in an all-stock deal, valuing xAI at $80 billion and X at $33 billion in equity value. The stated aim was to combine xAI’s AI capabilities with X’s reach; the announcements and filings cited here do not set out a detailed roadmap for what X or Grok users will see next.
What the $80 billion and $33 billion figures mean
In announcing the March 2025 transaction, Musk said xAI was valued at $80 billion and X at $33 billion in equity value. He also described X’s value as $45 billion when including $12 billion in debt. These are announced deal figures, not publicly traded market prices or independently audited fair-value conclusions. The Associated Press noted that both companies were privately held and were not required to disclose their finances publicly. AP’s March 2025 report provides contemporaneous context.
The distinction between equity value and a debt-inclusive figure matters: $33 billion describes the stated value of X’s equity, while $45 billion adds the stated $12 billion in debt. The announcement described an all-stock transaction, not a cash purchase. Musk’s announcement and Tesla’s SEC proxy filing document the transaction as announced.
How ownership changed from 2025 to 2026

Why xAI said it acquired X
Musk’s stated rationale was to bring together data, models, computing resources, distribution and talent. He said the combination would blend xAI’s AI capabilities with X’s reach. That is the announced strategic goal, not evidence by itself that a particular integration was completed or produced a measurable result.
In the announcement reproduced by AP on March 28, 2025, Musk wrote: “xAI and X’s futures are intertwined. Today, we officially take the step to combine the data, models, compute, distribution and talent. This combination will unlock immense potential by blending xAI’s advanced AI capability and expertise with X’s massive reach.” AP reproduced the statement alongside its account of the deal.

What comes next for X and Grok?
The official announcement and filings cited here do not specify a future X or Grok product roadmap, a schedule of user-facing changes, or measured integration outcomes. AP reported that the initial announcement did not make clear whether the transaction would change the experience for X users. As a result, claims about a particular upcoming feature, rollout date or user benefit are not established by these deal materials.
For readers, the reliable distinction is between the ownership and strategy that were announced and product changes that would need separate documentation. The acquisition creates a corporate link among X, xAI and, after the 2026 transaction, SpaceX; it does not alone establish what services will change, when they will change or how users will experience them.
