Sony raised U.S. recommended prices for all three PS5 console models by $50 in August 2025, with the increase taking effect August 21. Sony cited a “challenging economic environment”; contemporaneous reporting connected the move to tariff uncertainty and supply-chain costs, but Sony did not name tariffs as the sole cause. Those 2025 prices are no longer current: Sony’s next U.S. increase took effect April 2, 2026.
What are the PS5 prices now?
Sony’s March 27, 2026 notice set these U.S. recommended prices effective April 2, 2026. The figures are recommended prices, not a guarantee of what a particular retailer charges.
| Model | Before Aug. 21, 2025 | From Aug. 21, 2025 | From Apr. 2, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | $499.99 | $549.99 | $649.99 |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $449.99 | $499.99 | $599.99 |
| PS5 Pro | $699.99 | $749.99 | $899.99 |
The August 2025 prices and effective date were reported by CBS News; Sony published the April 2026 recommended prices and effective date on the PlayStation Blog. Retail transaction prices and availability can vary.
Why did Sony raise PS5 prices in the U.S.?
For the August 2025 change, Sony’s public explanation was broad rather than tariff-specific. Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Vice President of Global Marketing, said: “Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment.” She added that Sony had made the “difficult decision” to increase U.S. recommended prices starting August 21. The Associated Press reproduced her statement.

Tariffs were part of the surrounding cost context, not a publicly stated sole cause. Reuters reported that U.S. tariffs threatened to raise costs and described supply-chain disruption and material-cost concerns. The AP reported Sony was working to diversify its supply chain to alleviate tariff impact. WIRED cited analyst Daniel Ahmad’s view that U.S. stockpiles and manufacturing diversification were steps Sony had taken to mitigate tariff impacts. Those are reporting and analyst assessments, distinct from Sony’s quoted explanation.
Sony used similarly general language for its later price round. In March 2026, Tomatis attributed global price changes for PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” That announcement did not specifically name tariffs.

How much did the PS5 price go up in August 2025?
Each of the three U.S. console models rose by $50 in the 2025 round: the PS5 went from $499.99 to $549.99, the Digital Edition from $449.99 to $499.99, and the PS5 Pro from $699.99 to $749.99. These are the prices associated with Sony’s August 2025 announcement, not current official prices.
When did the increase start, and did it affect accessories?
Sony’s 2025 U.S. increase took effect August 21, 2025. The AP reported that it applied to consoles sold in the United States; games and accessories were not included in that price change. That scope describes the August 2025 round, not a promise about later pricing.

How should you compare a PS5 price today?
- Match the model: disc-capable PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, or PS5 Pro.
- Use the April 2, 2026 recommended price as the latest official U.S. figure in Sony’s cited notice, rather than treating the 2025 price as current.
- Check the retailer’s actual listing for its transaction price and availability; retailer offers may differ from Sony’s recommended price.
