A Charizard-shaped Flamin’ Hot Cheeto sold at Goldin for a reported total of $87,840 on March 2, 2025. The winning bid itself was $72,000; the additional $15,840 was a 22% buyer’s premium. That distinction explains why headlines put the sale close to $88,000.
How much did the Pokémon Cheeto sell for?
The final reported total was $87,840, but that was not the winning bid alone. The Associated Press reported that the winning bid was $72,000 and Goldin’s listing recorded 60 bids. TODAY reported that the auction charged a 22% buyer’s premium: $15,840 on the winning bid.
| Amount | What it represents |
|---|---|
| $72,000 | Winning bid before the buyer’s premium, reported by The Associated Press. |
| $15,840 | 22% buyer’s premium applied to the $72,000 bid, as reported by TODAY. |
| $87,840 | Reported total including the premium, according to The Associated Press. |
| 60 | Bids recorded in Goldin’s listing, as reported by The Associated Press. |
The reported total clarifies the headline figure, but it does not establish the buyer’s full out-of-pocket cost: the coverage cited here does not detail any other possible taxes, shipping, or charges.
What exactly was the Cheetozard?
Goldin’s auction description, quoted by the Associated Press, identified it as a 3-inch Flamin’ Hot Cheeto shaped like Pokémon’s Charizard. It was affixed to a customized Pokémon card and enclosed in a clear card storage box. The sale was for this presented collectible, not simply a loose snack.

Why did this single snack attract such a high bid?
The item brought together two recognizable fan communities. Dave Amerman, Goldin’s head of consignment, told TODAY that it “bridges two fandoms — Pokémon and Cheetos.” Its distinctive shape, presentation, and story also made it easy to share: TODAY reported that it surged on social media in late 2024.
The auction description says 1st & Goal Collectibles found and preserved the Cheeto sometime between 2018 and 2022. Those details supply a provenance story, but the available reporting does not establish a general formula for valuing unusual food collectibles or explain how much each factor contributed to this particular bid.

Does the sale mean other unusual Cheetos are worth thousands?
No. This is one completed auction, not a market-wide price benchmark. Cowboy State Daily quoted Megan Giatroudakis, owner of Collector’s Hub in Cheyenne, saying, “Right now, I guess it’s worth what anybody would pay for it.” The remark captures the uncertainty of valuing an unusual one-off, rather than setting a predictable resale price.
That report also recounted earlier unusual-food stories, including a Cheeto resembling Harambe listed on eBay in 2017 and an allegedly Virgin Mary-shaped grilled-cheese sandwich. These are anecdotes, not verified comparable sales. TODAY mentioned other uniquely shaped Cheetos listed on eBay when its story appeared in March 2025; that is historical context, not evidence that those listings remain available or sold for a particular amount.

Who bought it?
The buyer was not identified in the reporting. TODAY said Goldin declined to disclose the purchaser’s identity.
What to check before treating a collectible auction price as a market value
For someone assessing a reported collectible sale, the headline number alone can obscure what was actually paid or what another item might be worth. Useful distinctions include:
- Bid versus total: Check whether the quoted amount is the winning bid or includes a buyer’s premium and other charges.
- Completed sale versus asking price: An active listing shows what a seller is seeking, not what a buyer paid.
- Provenance and presentation: This item had a reported discovery and preservation history and was mounted on a custom card in a clear box; those facts describe this lot, not every snack-shaped collectible.
- Comparable evidence: A handful of unusual-food anecdotes is not a verified dataset of comparable completed sales.
In this case, the best-supported takeaway is specific: one Charizard-shaped Cheeto sold for a $72,000 bid, or a reported $87,840 including the 22% premium. It is not evidence that ordinary Cheetos—or other oddly shaped snacks—have a reliable resale value.
