In April 2019, a project called Satoshi’s Treasure announced a Bitcoin prize framed as worth $1 million and invited people around the world to solve clues to reach it. The hunt blended online puzzles with real-world scavenger-hunt leads, and its reported key-sharing design meant participants had to collaborate. The launch-era dollar figure was not a current valuation, and the available reporting does not establish whether the prize was ultimately claimed or whether the hunt remains active.
What was Satoshi’s Treasure?
Satoshi’s Treasure was a global puzzle hunt launched in April 2019. Organizers released clues intended to help participants find fragments of a key associated with a Bitcoin wallet. CoinDesk reported that the first clues were released through Blockstream’s satellite, while other leads involved online activity and physical-world locations. CoinDesk’s launch coverage described the project as a puzzle with a Bitcoin prize; Futurism also reported on the hunt and its varied clue types.
The $1 million figure described the prize’s launch-era value framing in 2019 reporting. Bitcoin’s price changes over time, so that figure should not be read as the prize’s present value or as evidence of a payout.
How did the Bitcoin key fragments work?
CoinDesk reported that the wallet key was divided into 1,000 fragments and that at least 400 were needed to move the funds. That threshold was the reported game mechanic: no single clue or fragment was enough, and participants needed to gather a substantial share of the pieces. The article describes the announced design, not proof that the key was later assembled or funds transferred.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
What kinds of clues did players solve?
The hunt mixed physical scavenger-hunt leads with puzzles that could be solved through reasoning. Futurism quoted co-creator Eric Meltzer, identified as a Primitive Ventures co-founder, describing the range: “There are some clues that are very scavenger hunt-y, and clues where it’s purely logic puzzles or math problems.”
That mix made the hunt broader than a single online riddle. Some clues pointed participants toward locations or activities in the physical world; others called for logic or mathematical problem-solving. The sources describe both online participation and real-world clues, but do not provide a complete catalog of clues or a definitive account of every stage.

Was it a solo hunt or a team effort?
Players could work on clues individually, but the reported 1,000-fragment design and 400-fragment threshold encouraged collaboration: collecting enough pieces was a collective challenge, not simply a matter of finding one hidden object. CoinDesk reported that 60,000 digital sleuths were involved by May 2019. That is CoinDesk’s reported participation figure, not an independently audited count. CoinDesk’s May 2019 report gives the figure.

The cited 2019 coverage establishes the launch, announced prize framing, and reported game mechanics, but it does not establish the hunt’s final outcome or current status. The reporting reviewed here does not confirm a winner, a final payout, or that the original hunt is still active. That lack of confirmation is not proof that no one won; it means the available evidence is insufficient to state the outcome. Treat Satoshi’s Treasure as a historical puzzle hunt rather than a verified current opportunity to claim Bitcoin.
