The claim that Solana (SOL), Shiba Inu (SHIB) and Retik Finance (RETIK) were “the three tokens to hold for 2024” was a forward-looking recommendation published on December 26, 2023. It is now historical, not current investment guidance. The available evidence describes risks, token characteristics and project-promoted products; it does not establish that these are the best tokens to hold now, or that any of them will deliver positive returns.
What the 2024 recommendation can—and cannot—tell you
The original article by David Bryan was published on December 26, 2023, looking ahead to 2024. Its selection of three tokens should be read in that time context, not as a recommendation refreshed for 2026. A token’s project description, planned feature or past price movement cannot by itself establish future performance.
The sources available for this update do not provide a comparable, current basis for forecasting returns or ranking SOL, SHIB and RETIK. They also do not establish that these three are suitable for a particular investor. A decision to hold any crypto asset depends on factors such as the investor’s ability to absorb a total loss, time horizon, portfolio concentration, access to reliable custody and the quality of evidence for the project’s actual use.

Rather than treating a three-token list as a portfolio, assess each asset on evidence that matters to your own risk decision. The available sources point to several distinct questions:

- Network role and dependencies: Identify what the token does, which network and software it depends on, and what could prevent holders from using or transferring it.
- Evidence of use: Separate a live product with verifiable users from a product described by its issuer or a feature that is still only planned. For RETIK, the cited descriptions do not independently verify delivery or adoption of the promoted products.
- Supply and concentration: Check whether supply figures are dated and whether holdings are concentrated. The cited SHIB supply figures are as of May 13, 2026; the SOL filing specifically flags concentration among large holders.
- Liquidity, custody and operational risk: Consider whether you can buy, sell, transfer and securely access the asset under the conditions that apply to you. The SOL disclosure names trading-venue, theft, fraud, operational, software and wallet risks.
- Evidence quality and recency: Give more weight to current, independently verifiable information than to an old recommendation or project marketing. A filing can document stated risks or figures without proving a token is a sound investment.
What the SEC statements say—and what they do not decide
The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s 2025 staff statement addresses a limited category of meme coins matching the statement’s description. It says: “Accordingly, neither meme coin purchasers nor holders are protected by the federal securities laws.” The statement expressly is not a rule, regulation or Commission-approved statement, and its analysis depends on the specific facts. It should not be treated as a settled classification for every token or offering, including every transaction involving SHIB.
The SEC’s crypto-assets explainer lists SOL and SHIB as examples of digital commodities within its framework. That example is not a legal conclusion about every transaction involving either asset. The applicable legal analysis can depend on the facts of a particular asset, offering and transaction.

So, are SOL, SHIB or RETIK worth holding?
The evidence here cannot support a blanket yes—or a ranking among the three. It supports a more limited conclusion: SOL has material market, concentration, operational and custody-related risks identified in a fund disclosure; SHIB is described in a 2026 filing as an ERC-20 token with a very large reported supply; and RETIK’s promoted product set is not independently verified by the cited project and listing pages. None of those observations establishes expected returns.
If you are revisiting the 2024 list, treat it as a historical opinion rather than a current portfolio plan. Make any decision using current information relevant to your jurisdiction and circumstances, and do not risk money you cannot afford to lose. A hardware wallet may help with certain self-custody risks, but it cannot prevent a token’s price from falling and is not an endorsement of any asset or wallet brand.
