SoftBank’s $100 Billion U.S. Investment: What Was Announced—and What’s Known

SoftBank and President-elect Trump announced a four-year U.S. investment plan in December 2024. Later AI projects and transactions add context, but do not establish that the pledge was fully deployed or its job target met.

SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son and President-elect Donald Trump announced on December 16, 2024, a plan for SoftBank to invest $100 billion in U.S. projects over four years. The plan was expected to focus on artificial intelligence, and Trump said it would create at least 100,000 American jobs. Those were announced intentions and a job target—not evidence that the full investment was made or that the jobs were created. The Associated Press report of the announcement is the basis for those original figures.

What SoftBank announced in December 2024

At Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump and Son presented the $100 billion as a four-year investment plan for projects in the United States. Contemporaneous reporting said the plan was expected to focus on AI. Trump attached a goal of at least 100,000 American jobs and called the investment “a monumental demonstration of confidence in America’s future.” The job figure was his announcement-stage projection, not a reported outcome.

The wording matters: the announcement described what SoftBank planned to invest, not money already deployed. It did not, in the sources available, specify a project-by-project schedule or establish how many jobs would ultimately result.

How it compares with SoftBank’s 2016 pledge

The 2024 announcement echoed a commitment Son made after Trump’s first election victory in 2016: $50 billion in U.S. investments and 50,000 jobs. That earlier pledge is useful context, but reported delivery and employment outcomes should not be treated as interchangeable measures.

At a later official event, Son said, “We delivered $70 billion over four years last time.” Separately, the Associated Press noted uncertainty about the number of jobs created by the earlier commitment and pointed to Foxconn, whose project was initially announced at $10 billion and 13,000 jobs before being scaled back. Son’s retrospective statement concerns investment delivery; it does not verify the job target. The official transcript records Son’s later remarks, while AP’s account describes the earlier pledge and the questions surrounding its outcomes.

What Stargate and the OpenAI investment add to the picture

Stargate: a separate AI infrastructure announcement

On January 22, 2025, SoftBank announced Stargate, a new company that it said intended to invest $500 billion over four years in AI infrastructure for OpenAI in the United States, with $100 billion to begin deploying immediately. SoftBank named itself, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX as initial equity funders. It said SoftBank would have financial responsibility, OpenAI operational responsibility, and Son would chair the project. The initial buildout was underway in Texas, with other potential sites under evaluation.

These are details of SoftBank’s Stargate announcement, not a reconciliation of the December 2024 pledge. The company described an initiative with its own partners and funding structure; the release does not establish that Stargate fully accounts for, or fulfills, the earlier $100 billion plan. SoftBank’s Stargate announcement also cautions that company statements reflect the date of filing and may become outdated.

OpenAI: a disclosed transaction, not a tally of the pledge

SoftBank’s FY2025 financial report documented a separate agreement to invest up to $40 billion in OpenAI. It recorded a $10 billion first closing on April 15, 2025, and a target of closing up to $30 billion more in December 2025. SoftBank also reported that $1.5 billion of the first closing was syndicated to co-investors on April 15; after further syndication, its Vision Fund 2 investment was reduced from $8.5 billion to $7.5 billion.

This report documents specific AI-related investment activity. It does not say that these amounts should be counted toward the 2024 pledge, nor does it provide a complete accounting of that commitment. SoftBank’s financial reports provide the company’s disclosure of the transaction.

What is—and is not—established about the $100 billion

The available evidence establishes the original announcement, its intended four-year period and expected AI focus, Trump’s job target, subsequent Stargate plans, and SoftBank’s disclosed OpenAI transaction. It does not establish the total amount deployed specifically under the December 2024 pledge, whether the full sum represented new capital, or how many jobs were attributable to it.

Later figures should therefore remain attached to their own announcements and transactions. Adding Stargate’s intended investment or SoftBank’s OpenAI figures to the original pledge would not prove that the December 2024 commitment was completed; the cited sources do not provide that accounting.
