To find out when a Social Security payment is scheduled, use the Social Security Administration’s annual payment calendar. To prove that you receive benefits—or document an application or other status—request a benefit verification letter. The calendar answers a timing question; the letter answers a status and proof question. One does not replace the other.
Which SSA resource answers your question?
Retirees may hear a benefit verification letter called a benefits letter, budget letter, proof-of-income letter, or proof-of-award letter. These names generally refer to the same kind of personalized SSA document. It is not a notice that tells you the date your next payment will arrive.

| Your need | Use | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Find the scheduled date for a monthly payment | SSA’s annual Social Security payment calendar | The calendar date for a payment group in a particular month and year. |
| Show that you receive benefits, applied, or do not receive benefits, as applicable | Benefit verification letter | Your documented benefit or application status, based on your SSA record. |
| Access account-based benefit and payment information, or obtain a letter online | Personal my Social Security account | Online access to account information and the letter service. |
Start with the document or information the person asking for it actually needs. If a lender, housing provider, or government agency asks for proof, a payment-calendar entry is not proof of your individual benefit. If you only want to know the scheduled date, a verification letter is not a substitute for the calendar.

The three resources are related, but they do different jobs. The payment calendar is a public schedule organized by month and payment group. A verification letter is personalized to the status information SSA can document for you. A personal my Social Security account is an online access point for account information and the letter service; it does not turn the public calendar into a personalized deposit-time notice.

A useful first question is: “Am I trying to find a date, or prove a status?” For a date, identify the applicable year, month, and payment group on the calendar. For proof, use the letter and confirm the format accepted by the organization requesting it. How Social Security payment dates work in 2026
The Social Security Administration’s Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments 2026, Publication No. 05-10031, labeled January 2026, sets out the scheduled dates for that year. For most people on the Wednesday schedule, the payment Wednesday is based on the day of the month they were born—not the date their benefit was approved:
| Birth date | Usual scheduled payment day |
|---|---|
| 1st through 10th | Second Wednesday of the month |
| 11th through 20th | Third Wednesday of the month |
| 21st through 31st | Fourth Wednesday of the month |
Those are the cycle rules, not the calendar dates for every month. The actual Wednesday changes from month to month, so check the 2026 calendar for the specific month rather than calculating or assuming a date. Do not carry the dates on a 2026 calendar forward into another year: use the SSA calendar for the year in question.

Someone born on the 28th belongs to the third group. These examples identify only the applicable Wednesday of the month; the SSA calendar is still needed to find its actual date for a particular month in 2026.
The rule uses the recipient’s day of birth, not the day the person applied, was approved, or first received a particular monthly amount. If you are unsure which birth date SSA has on record, or your circumstances do not seem to fit the calendar, consult SSA rather than guessing from another recipient’s schedule. The calendar’s groups are a way to locate a scheduled date, not a way to verify someone’s benefit status or amount.
Recipients on the 3rd-of-the-month schedule
The 2026 calendar also identifies recipients who follow a different schedule: people who began receiving Social Security before May 1997, and people who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Social Security is scheduled for the 3rd for these groups. For a person receiving both Social Security and SSI, SSI is scheduled for the 1st. Check the annual calendar to confirm the schedule that applies to you; do not assume that every recipient is on the Wednesday cycle.
This distinction matters when comparing your date with a friend’s or relative’s. Two people can both receive Social Security yet have different scheduled dates because they fall under different payment rules. A recipient who receives both Social Security and SSI should check both entries on the calendar: Social Security is listed for the 3rd and SSI for the 1st. The two dates are not interchangeable, and the Wednesday birth-date chart should not be applied automatically to someone on the alternate schedule.

Find your date in the official calendar
- Identify the year and month for the payment you are checking. The dates in SSA’s 2026 calendar apply to 2026 only.
- Determine whether the alternate schedule applies: you began receiving Social Security before May 1997, or you receive both Social Security and SSI. If so, check the 3rd-of-the-month schedule; for combined Social Security and SSI, the calendar lists SSI on the 1st.
- If you are on the Wednesday cycle, use your birth-date range—1st–10th, 11th–20th, or 21st–31st—to identify the second, third, or fourth Wednesday group.
- Look up the actual date for that month on the SSA annual calendar. Do not infer a deposit time from the date; the calendar provides scheduled dates, not a promise about when a bank will post funds.
These steps keep two common errors out of the process: using a date from the wrong year and choosing a Wednesday group before checking whether the alternate schedule applies. The official document is a year-specific schedule, so its month-by-month dates should be checked anew when the calendar year changes.
What a benefit verification letter can establish
SSA describes the letter as documentation that can show, as applicable, that you receive benefits, have submitted an application, or do not receive benefits. It is personalized to information such as your Social Security benefits, SSI, and Medicare coverage. The SSA service page describes its purpose this way: “Get a benefit letter to show that you receive benefits, have submitted an application, or don’t receive benefits.”
The “as applicable” point is important: a benefit verification letter is not a promise that every possible status will appear in every person’s letter. It documents information relevant to the individual’s SSA record. In particular, SSA identifies the letter as a way to document nonreceipt in applicable cases, which may be useful when an organization needs confirmation that you do not receive benefits rather than proof of a monthly payment.
A letter may be useful when someone needs to verify income or status rather than just see a public payment schedule. SSA lists common uses including:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Income documentation for a loan or mortgage.
- Documentation for assisted housing or other state or local benefits.
- Confirmation of current Medicare coverage.
- Proof related to retirement status, disability, or age.
- Documentation of a pending benefits application.
These are examples of reasons to request the document, not a guarantee that every organization will accept it for every purpose. A lender may have its own application checklist; a housing provider or state or local program may also specify which documents it needs. The organization receiving the letter decides what it will accept and how it wants the information submitted.
Before requesting or sending documents, ask whether it requires a downloaded PDF, a printed copy, or additional documentation. You may be able to save the online letter rather than print it, but that is useful only if the recipient accepts a digital copy. A letter can document the status SSA lists for you; it does not guarantee that a lender, housing program, or other organization will approve an application.
Keep the purpose of the request in mind when you contact the recipient. If the request is for income proof, clarify what income period or other supporting items it requires; if it is for Medicare coverage, confirm that the letter is the documentation it wants. SSA’s letter can establish listed benefit, SSI, Medicare, or application information, but the recipient—not SSA—sets its own submission requirements.

How to get your own letter
Online through my Social Security
SSA says a personal my Social Security account provides a self-service way to request a benefit verification letter. The letter can be viewed, saved, or printed immediately. Printing is optional: if the organization accepts a digital copy, you can save the file instead. The current account page lists Login.gov and ID.me as sign-in options.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Go to the official my Social Security account service and sign in using an available sign-in option.
- Open the benefit verification letter service and request your letter.
- Review the letter to make sure it is the document and status information the requesting organization needs.
- Save or print a copy, depending on how you need to submit it. Check the recipient’s requirements before sending it.
Immediate online access means the letter is available to view, save, or print after using the service; printing is not a required part of the process. If you only need to inspect the information or submit it digitally, a printer is unnecessary. If the recipient needs a hard copy, print it after checking the requested format.
Account access providers and online procedures can change. If a sign-in option or page label differs from what you expect, follow the current instructions on SSA’s account page rather than using an unofficial service. You do not need to pay a third party to obtain the SSA letter. The government-issued letter is available through SSA’s own account and contact options described here.
Use your own personal account. SSA says a user cannot obtain another person’s letter online unless they are an active representative payee for that beneficiary. The fact that a person is a relative or is helping with paperwork does not create the online exception described by SSA. Do not sign in as someone else or ask them to share credentials as a workaround.
By phone if online access is not workable
SSA’s benefit-letter FAQ, dated March 13, 2024, says you can call 1-800-772-1213. The FAQ lists the hours as Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. For someone receiving benefits or with a pending application, SSA says it will mail the letter within 10 business days to the address on file. This is the agency’s stated mailing interval, not an estimate for online access or a guarantee of postal delivery on a particular day. Phone procedures and hours may change, so check SSA’s current instructions if you are calling later.

The mail option is particularly relevant if online access is not workable. Plan around the stated 10-business-day interval for SSA to mail the letter, and remember that the letter goes to the address SSA has on file. If you need proof by a particular deadline, contact the organization requesting it as well; do not assume that mailing will satisfy a deadline or that the recipient will accept a later copy.
If you are helping someone else
SSA says you cannot obtain another person’s letter online unless you are an active representative payee for that beneficiary. Do not sign in as the beneficiary or use their account credentials. If you are not an active representative payee, contact SSA for guidance on the appropriate way to help; the cited online-account rule does not authorize access through another person’s login.

The same FAQ says SSI recipients need to contact SSA to update their address. If SSA mails a requested letter, an outdated address on file can therefore matter. Confirm the appropriate address procedure with SSA rather than assuming a letter requested online will be mailed to a new address automatically.
These access limits apply to the online letter request. They do not mean you should try to solve an access problem by entering another person’s sign-in information. For a family member who needs help, use the applicable SSA contact route and ask what assistance procedure fits the situation.
If a scheduled payment has not arrived
A payment date on the calendar is a scheduled date; it does not specify the hour a bank will post funds. The SSA’s 2026 calendar gives this instruction: “If you don’t receive your payment on the expected date, please allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security.” That means waiting three additional mailing days after the expected date before contacting SSA about a missing payment. This is the calendar’s guidance for a payment that has not arrived, not a claim that every late payment will arrive within that period.
Use the waiting period as written: first make sure you are comparing the payment with the expected date for your schedule and month, then allow the three additional mailing days stated by SSA before contacting Social Security. The schedule does not promise a particular time of day for a bank posting, so a payment not visible at a particular hour on its scheduled date is not evidence that SSA’s date was a time-of-day guarantee.
If the payment is still absent after the stated interval, contact Social Security about the missing payment. A verification letter serves a different purpose: it may prove your benefit or application status, but it is not the channel for reporting that an expected payment has not arrived. Keep the two tasks separate while you follow up. The annual calendar helps verify which date applies to your payment group and month. A benefit verification letter documents status; requesting one does not report a missing payment or change the payment schedule.
Common mix-ups to avoid
- Using a letter to predict a deposit: The letter is for benefit or application status. Check the annual calendar for the scheduled payment date.
- Using the calendar as personal income proof: The calendar shows general payment dates, not your individual benefit amount or whether you receive benefits. Ask for a verification letter when an organization needs proof.
- Applying the Wednesday rule to everyone: Some recipients use the 3rd-of-the-month schedule. Check the alternate schedule before choosing a Wednesday group.
- Assuming the calendar date guarantees a posting time: SSA publishes scheduled dates, not a specific bank processing hour.
- Reusing an old year’s dates: The Wednesday group rule is useful, but the actual month dates vary by year. Look at the calendar for the applicable year.
- Assuming a relative can request a letter through your account: SSA’s stated online exception is an active representative payee. Ask SSA about the right assistance route instead of sharing credentials.
- Assuming the letter guarantees approval: The letter documents applicable SSA status; the lender, housing provider, or other organization decides whether it meets that organization’s requirements.
- Assuming online access requires printing: SSA says you can view and save the letter immediately. Print only if you or the organization receiving it needs a paper copy.
- Assuming a mailed letter goes to a new address automatically: SSA mails it to the address on file. SSI recipients should contact SSA to update an address.
