The claim that six Nigerian Exchange (NGX) stocks gained 427% year to date (YTD) while reaching a combined market value of N185.9 billion cannot be verified from the available dated market reports. Those reports give broader NGX performance figures, but do not identify the six stocks or establish how either headline figure was calculated.
What the 427% and N185.9b figures do—and do not—show
The six-stock list, the return calculation and the date and scope of the N185.9 billion valuation are not established by the cited sources. It is therefore not possible to confirm that the stocks collectively gained 427%, that each gained that amount, or that N185.9 billion represents their combined market capitalisation.

The distinction matters: a share-price return measures how a stock’s price changed over a stated period, while market capitalisation is a company’s share price multiplied by its shares outstanding at a particular time. A subset of six companies’ combined market value is not the same measure as the total value of all NGX-listed equities.

Published figures show that the broader market’s YTD return varied by observation date. They provide context, not verification of the six-stock claim.
#1 Best Overall
| Observation date | Reported figure | Source and scope |
|---|---|---|
| May 26, 2026 | 60.49% peak YTD return | Nairametrics reported this as the NGX All-Share Index’s peak YTD return in its H1 2026 coverage. Nairametrics, July 4, 2026. |
| June 30, 2026 | 46.8% H1 YTD return; index closed at 229,419.18 points | NGX All-Share Index, as reported by Nairametrics, July 4, 2026. |
| August 14, 2026 | 55.91% YTD return | NGX All-Share Index, as reported by Nigerian Exchange Group, August 15, 2026. |
| September 30, 2026 | N163.105 trillion aggregate listed-equity market capitalisation | All NGX-listed equities, not the six-stock subset; reported by Papers.com.ng, October 2026. |
These figures refer to different dates and, in the case of market capitalisation, a different scope. They should not be added together or treated as a reconciliation of the N185.9 billion headline value. The reported N163.105 trillion aggregate market capitalisation on September 30 also cannot confirm a six-company subset valuation.

A reliable check requires the original six-company list and comparable data for every stock. For each company, the calculation should specify:
- The opening and closing dates used for the YTD return.
- The share prices and return formula, including whether the figure is an average, a total, or another combined measure.
- How corporate actions, such as share splits or dividends, were treated.
- Trading liquidity and volume over the period; a large percentage rise alone does not show whether shares could be bought or sold readily.
- The market-capitalisation date and whether N185.9 billion refers to the six companies together or another measure.
Until those details are available, the headline should be treated as an unverified claim rather than a confirmed ranking or investable signal. A reported price gain by itself does not establish a company’s fundamentals or predict future performance.
