Usually, yes—if you are investing toward a long-term goal, your portfolio still matches your plan, and you have enough cash for emergencies and near-term needs. A rally alone does not tell you when prices will turn, so stopping scheduled contributions or selling just to wait for a pullback means making a market-timing decision. First check your goal, time horizon, risk tolerance, cash needs, and current asset mix.
Why a rally is not a reliable signal to stop investing
A rising market can make it feel as though you have missed your chance to invest, or that a decline must be close. Neither conclusion follows from the rally itself. Prices may continue rising or fall; the fact that they have risen does not reliably forecast what happens next.

Investor.gov’s October 2026 bulletin cautions that chasing returns or trying to time the market can lead to buying at highs and selling while prices are falling. Its practical advice is to plan for market changes and follow a patient, periodic investing approach rather than react to recent performance. Investor.gov

The key distinction is between reacting to a market move and responding to a change in your own circumstances. A market-timing decision says, “I will stop now because prices have risen and I expect a pullback.” A planning decision asks whether the money is still intended for a long-term goal, whether the allocation remains appropriate, and whether you can leave the money invested through fluctuations. The first depends on predicting a short-term turn; the second is grounded in your needs and plan.
When continuing scheduled contributions makes sense
If your goal is years away, you have chosen an allocation suited to your time horizon and tolerance for losses, and you have adequate accessible savings, continuing contributions on schedule is generally more evidence-based than pausing to predict a correction. A schedule also makes investing a repeatable behavior rather than a decision you must remake every time prices move.
Investor.gov defines dollar-cost averaging as investing equal portions at regular intervals regardless of market ups and downs. With a fixed contribution, you buy more shares when prices are lower and fewer when prices are higher. This may help manage risk, but it does not prevent losses or guarantee a gain. Investor.gov’s dollar-cost averaging explanation

The SEC has also offered a historical-return estimate as context: some experts consider 7–10% a useful estimate of annual returns for long-term diversified investments in U.S. stocks, based on historical averages. Investor.gov notes that investing has no set rate of return. This is not a forecast, a promise, or an estimate of what stocks will return next year. Investor.gov’s saving and investing overview
That historical estimate should not be used to justify taking more risk than you can tolerate or to assume a smooth annual return. Its context is long-term diversified U.S. stock investments; it is not a prediction for a particular market rally, a specific fund, or the next year.

How to decide what to do
- Name the goal and date. Identify what the money is for and when you expect to need it. A long horizon may make volatile investments more tolerable; a short horizon can make a loss at the wrong time harder to absorb. Investor.gov’s asset-allocation guidance
- Check cash needs first. Keep emergency funds and money needed soon accessible rather than depending on investments that can fall in value. Adequate savings can reduce the chance that you must sell investments prematurely. Investor.gov’s saving and investing overview
- Compare your current allocation with your target. Review the proportions in stocks, bonds, and cash, then compare them with the mix you chose for your goal and risk tolerance. A rally may have shifted those proportions.
- Choose the action that restores the plan. If your allocation remains suitable and your contributions are affordable, keep following the schedule. If the portfolio has drifted from its target, consider rebalancing. If your goal or ability to tolerate losses has changed, revisit the plan itself.
As you work through the steps, separate money you may need soon from money that can remain invested. Then consider whether your goal, time horizon, or tolerance for losses has changed since you set your allocation. Finally, check what you own and whether the current mix still reflects the risk level you intended. There is no allocation that the cited guidance says is right for everyone.

Should you rebalance after a rally?
Possibly—if market gains have moved your portfolio away from its intended allocation. Rebalancing means bringing holdings back toward the mix selected for your circumstances. It is a way to manage risk and maintain a chosen allocation, not a prediction that the rally is about to end.
Investor.gov illustrates allocation drift with a hypothetical portfolio whose stock share moves from 60% to 80% after market gains. Those percentages are an example of how the mix can change, not a recommended allocation or a statistic about investors. Your appropriate target depends on your own horizon and risk tolerance. Investor.gov’s asset-allocation guidance
For example, if stock holdings rise faster than the rest of a portfolio, stocks may become a larger share than the investor intended. The change can matter even if the investments themselves have not changed, because the portfolio may now expose the investor to more risk than their plan calls for. The 60%-to-80% illustration shows this kind of shift; it is not an instruction to target either percentage.
Before changing holdings, check the allocation you actually intend to maintain and the rules you use to rebalance. The sources cited here do not prescribe a universal schedule, threshold, or target mix. Avoid treating a rebalance as a bet on the market’s next move.

When pausing contributions or reducing risk may be appropriate
Your money is needed soon
If you expect to use the money in the near term, the possibility of a market decline matters more than whether prices have recently risen. Consider whether that money belongs in volatile investments at all, and keep emergency funds accessible. Investor.gov describes savings as suitable for emergency access and notes that adequate savings can help investors avoid liquidating investments prematurely. Investor.gov’s saving and investing overview
Liquidity is a practical requirement, not a market prediction. If an unexpected expense or upcoming goal would force you to sell investments, money set aside for that purpose may not be serving you well in a volatile portfolio. Address emergency and near-term cash needs before deciding whether to add more exposure to assets that can lose value.
Your risk tolerance or goal has changed
If a potential loss now feels unacceptable, or the goal date has moved closer, revisit the allocation rather than making a decision solely because markets are rallying. Asset allocation is personal: time horizon and comfort with risk both matter. No universal stock-and-bond mix is right for everyone. Investor.gov’s asset-allocation guidance
Recommended Free Tools
A plan is not something to follow blindly after your needs change. A new goal, a shorter time horizon, or a lower ability to tolerate losses may be reasons to review the mix. The rally itself does not tell you what the new allocation should be, and the sources do not provide individualized advice or a universal target.
Your portfolio has become concentrated
Review what you own, not just how many investments you hold. Diversifying across and within asset classes may reduce concentration risk, but it cannot guarantee safety or prevent losses. A mutual fund or ETF is not automatically diversified: a narrowly focused fund may concentrate exposure in one segment, so inspect its holdings. Investor.gov’s asset-allocation guidance
Counting funds is not the same as checking diversification. Several investments may still leave you concentrated if they hold similar assets or focus narrowly. The relevant question is whether your exposure is spread across and within asset classes in a way that fits your plan. Diversification may help reduce risk from concentration, but it cannot make an investment safe or rule out losses.

Regular contributions are not the same decision as investing a lump sum
A recurring contribution from income follows a schedule, while a large sum already sitting in cash raises a separate question about how and when to put that money to work. The dollar-cost-averaging definition explains what happens when equal amounts are invested at intervals; it does not establish that spreading an existing lump sum over time is superior to investing it at once. Do not use the definition as proof of a result it does not address.
If you are considering a lump sum, do not assume that the evidence about regular contributions settles the question for you. The sources used here do not compare investing a lump sum immediately with phasing it in over time, so they cannot establish which is better. The decision still needs to fit your goals, horizon, risk tolerance, and liquidity needs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical comparison of your choices
| Situation | Useful question | Potential next step |
|---|---|---|
| Long-term goal, suitable allocation, adequate cash, scheduled contributions | Has anything about your plan or finances changed besides market prices? | If not, continuing the existing schedule avoids making a short-term forecast. |
| Current stock/bond/cash mix differs materially from the target | Has the rally increased risk beyond the level you selected? | Consider rebalancing toward the intended mix. |
| Emergency savings are inadequate or money is needed soon | Could a market decline force you to sell at a bad time? | Address liquidity and the time horizon before adding volatile exposure. |
| Goal, horizon, or tolerance for losses has changed | Is the original allocation still appropriate? | Revisit the plan rather than anchoring the decision on the rally. |
| A large amount is already available in cash | Are you deciding about a one-time investment rather than regular contributions? | Recognize that the cited guidance does not settle lump-sum versus phased investing. |
These choices should be compared on the factors the research supports: the goal and when you need the money, the risk of your current mix versus your target, whether you are following a regular contribution schedule or trying to time entry, your cash needs, and how diversified your holdings are. None of those checks predicts the market’s next move. They help determine whether your current plan still suits you.
What not to infer from a rising market
- A rally does not prove prices are about to fall, nor that they will keep rising.
- Stopping contributions does not guarantee that you will be able to resume at a lower price.
- Periodic investing can make buying automatic, but it does not remove market risk.
- Diversification can reduce concentration risk, but no allocation or investment strategy guarantees a gain.
- A historical return estimate is not a promise or a forecast for the next year.
- A fund or ETF is not automatically diversified just because it contains multiple holdings.
Lori Schock, then Director of the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance, wrote: “Remember, ultimately, it’s time in the market, not timing of the market, that generally leads to long-term investing success.” The article carrying that statement says it was provided in her official capacity and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Commission, Commissioners, or other staff. Frequently Asked Questions
Should I keep investing when the market is going up?
If you have a long-term goal, an allocation suited to your horizon and risk tolerance, enough cash for near-term needs, and scheduled contributions you can afford, continuing that plan is generally more evidence-based than trying to predict a correction. A rally alone is not a reliable signal to stop. Investments can still lose value, and periodic investing does not guarantee a gain.
Should I wait for a market correction before investing?
Waiting for a pullback is a form of market timing: you need to decide both when to stop and when to start again. Investor.gov cautions that trying to time the market can lead to buying at highs and selling while prices are falling. The research supports following a suitable plan rather than treating a rally as a forecast, but it does not predict whether or when a correction will happen.

Should I rebalance after a stock market rally?
Check your current stock, bond, and cash mix against your intended allocation. If gains have moved the portfolio away from that mix, rebalancing may help restore the risk level you selected. It is a risk-management step, not a prediction that the rally will end. The sources do not prescribe a universal target, threshold, or rebalancing schedule.
Does dollar-cost averaging guarantee that I will make money?
No. Dollar-cost averaging means investing equal portions at regular intervals regardless of market moves. A fixed contribution buys more shares at lower prices and fewer at higher prices, which may help manage risk, but it does not prevent losses or guarantee a gain.
Is a mutual fund or ETF automatically diversified?
No. A narrowly focused fund may concentrate exposure in one segment. Review what the fund holds and whether your investments are spread across and within asset classes. Diversification may reduce concentration risk but cannot guarantee safety or prevent losses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs it better to invest a lump sum at once or spread it out during a rally?
The research here does not compare lump-sum investing with phasing an existing sum in over time, so it does not establish that either approach is superior. Regular contributions from income are a separate decision. Consider your goal, time horizon, risk tolerance, and cash needs without treating the dollar-cost-averaging definition as proof about lump sums.
The Bottom Line
Keep following scheduled contributions if they still fit your long-term plan, your allocation remains appropriate, and you have adequate accessible cash. Review and rebalance if a rally has pushed your portfolio away from its target; prioritize liquidity if you need the money soon. A rally does not reliably tell you whether prices will rise or fall next.
