In the latest same-period results available here—second-quarter 2026, ended June 30 and released July 28—both grew sales, but their reported and organic growth, segment performance and earnings measures tell different stories. Those operating results do not establish which stock is cheaper: a current comparison requires same-date share prices and consistently defined valuation measures.
What is different about the two businesses?
Both companies sell coatings, but their routes to customers and segment mixes differ. That matters because total revenue alone can obscure what is driving growth and how exposed each company is to particular end markets.

Sherwin-Williams: company-operated stores plus coatings segments
Sherwin-Williams reports three groups: Paint Stores Group, Consumer Brands Group and Performance Coatings Group. Its Sherwin-Williams-branded products are sold exclusively through its company-operated stores and branches. Other brands reach customers through mass merchants, home centers, dealers, hardware stores, automotive retailers and industrial distributors. The company reported more than 5,400 company-operated stores and branches in its July 2026 results release. Its Performance Coatings Group serves construction, industrial, packaging and transportation markets in more than 120 countries. Sherwin-Williams’ second-quarter 2026 results
The store network is relevant to comparison because it gives Sherwin-Williams a distinct company-operated route for its namesake products, while its other brands use third-party retail and distribution channels. Its reported sales therefore reflect a mix of channels and product groups, not one undifferentiated paint business. The more than 5,400-store figure describes the scale of that network; it does not, on its own, establish store-level profitability or demonstrate that growth will continue.

PPG: global architectural, performance and industrial coatings
PPG reports Global Architectural Coatings, Performance Coatings and Industrial Coatings. Its markets include aerospace, automotive original-equipment manufacturing and refinish, protective and marine coatings, traffic solutions, packaging and architectural coatings. PPG reported sales in more than 50 countries. It reshaped its portfolio through divestitures in 2024, a factor to bear in mind when comparing reported sales across years. PPG’s second-quarter 2026 results and its 2025 annual report describe its businesses and portfolio.
PPG’s geographic and end-market reach means that its results can reflect conditions in several different industrial and consumer markets at once. For example, aerospace and packaging were identified as areas of strength in management’s Q2 outlook discussion, while weak refinish demand weighed on the Performance Coatings segment. A broad portfolio can diversify exposures, but it also makes it important to examine individual businesses rather than assume every segment moves together.
Sherwin-Williams’ store-based architectural paint channel is a key distinction; PPG’s mix includes substantial global industrial, aerospace, automotive and packaging exposure alongside architectural coatings. Neither the larger reported sales figure nor a particular segment mix, by itself, demonstrates superior growth quality or stock value.

The latest directly comparable period in these company releases is the quarter ended June 30, 2026; both companies published results on July 28, 2026. The figures below are company-reported and, where indicated, company-defined adjusted measures.
| Measure | Sherwin-Williams (SHW) | PPG Industries (PPG) |
|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $6.789 billion, up 7.5% year over year | $4.495 billion, up 7% year over year |
| Organic sales growth | Not stated as a consolidated figure in the cited release | 4%; volume up 2% and selling prices up 2% |
| Reported diluted EPS | $3.43, up 14.3% year over year | $1.96 |
| Adjusted diluted EPS | $3.70, up 9.5% year over year | $2.23, approximately flat year over year |
| Net income | $843.6 million | Not stated here |
| Selected operating indicator | Paint Stores Group same-store sales up 4.2% | Organic sales growth in eight of nine businesses |
For PPG, reported sales growth includes factors beyond organic growth; its release identified acquisition and foreign-currency effects. Sherwin-Williams attributed consolidated sales growth to higher sales in all segments, including the acquired Suvinil business. Read reported growth and organic growth together: reported figures show the overall change in sales, while organic growth helps separate underlying business performance from portfolio and currency effects. Neither measure replaces the other. Sherwin-Williams’ release; PPG’s release
PPG reported 4% organic growth with equal 2% contributions from volume and selling prices. That split helps answer a different question from the 7% increase in reported sales: it indicates how much of the organic change came from selling more product and how much from pricing, but it does not eliminate the effects of currency or portfolio changes in the reported total. PPG said organic sales increased in eight of nine businesses, a broad result that still leaves room for distinct trends in individual businesses.
Do not compare the two EPS amounts as though they were per-share scores on an identical basis. The companies have different share counts and business portfolios, and reported results include different accounting items. Sherwin-Williams identified acquisition-related amortization and restructuring charges among its reported EPS items. PPG’s reconciliation included acquisition amortization, restructuring, portfolio optimization, environmental remediation and a legal settlement. PPG explicitly cautions that adjusted measures are not U.S. GAAP measures and may not be comparable to similarly titled measures at other companies. Company-adjusted EPS is useful for understanding each company’s own presentation, but it does not create a standardized cross-company earnings measure.

For a disciplined comparison, keep at least two views side by side: the companies’ reported GAAP results and the adjusted figures they each publish, with the adjustment lists and definitions visible. The reported EPS growth rates in this quarter were 14.3% for Sherwin-Williams and approximately flat adjusted EPS for PPG; that contrast is informative, but it does not mean the underlying earnings are calculated on the same basis. Nor does a higher dollar EPS amount mean one stock is cheaper: per-share earnings must be related to share price, and the companies have different share counts.
What the segment results add
Sherwin-Williams’ quarterly growth appeared across all three groups, but the drivers varied. Paint Stores Group sales rose 5.1% to $3.890 billion, with same-store sales up 4.2%. Management attributed the group’s growth to professional end markets, price increases and low-single-digit volume growth. Consumer Brands sales increased 21.5% to $983.5 million, including the effects of the Suvinil acquisition and currency. Performance Coatings sales increased 6.3% to $1.914 billion. Sherwin-Williams, July 28, 2026
The Paint Stores same-store result is a useful companion to the group’s total sales growth: same-store sales rose 4.2%, compared with 5.1% growth in total segment sales. The difference is consistent with the importance of considering more than one measure, although the figures alone do not quantify each factor behind the gap. Consumer Brands’ 21.5% increase should also be read with its stated acquisition and currency effects, rather than treated as an organic growth rate.
PPG’s segments show why sales growth should be checked against profitability and underlying sales. Global Architectural Coatings sales rose 8% to $1.098 billion, including currency effects, while organic sales growth was 2%. Performance Coatings sales rose 7% to $1.619 billion, but segment income declined 8% and EBITDA margin fell year over year as refinish demand remained weak. Industrial Coatings sales increased 7% to $1.778 billion; organic sales rose 5%, with volume gains across its three businesses. PPG, July 28, 2026
PPG’s segment figures illustrate why revenue growth is not a complete profitability comparison. Performance Coatings had higher sales but lower segment income and EBITDA margin year over year, while Industrial Coatings combined sales growth with organic growth and volume gains across its three businesses. The company releases do not provide a matched, company-wide margin comparison for both firms, so these segment details should be treated as evidence about the direction of particular businesses, not a definitive ranking of overall operating efficiency.
What does the full-year 2025 baseline show?
| Fiscal 2025 measure | Sherwin-Williams | PPG Industries |
|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $23.57 billion, up 2.1% | $15.875 billion, approximately flat year over year; organic sales growth was 2% |
| Adjusted diluted EPS | $11.43, up 0.9% from $11.33 in 2024 | $7.58, down 4% from $7.87 in 2024 |
| Operating cash flow | Net operating cash of $3.45 billion, or 14.6% of net sales | $1.9 billion |
| Capital returned to shareholders | Not stated in the cited 2025 summary figures | $1.4 billion: about $630 million in dividends and $790 million in share repurchases |
The baseline supports several observations, but not a stock recommendation. Sherwin-Williams had the larger reported sales base and modest adjusted EPS growth in 2025. PPG reported roughly flat net sales alongside 2% organic growth, while adjusted EPS declined 4%. Because PPG’s portfolio had been reshaped by 2024 divestitures, reported sales comparisons across years can reflect changes in what the company owns as well as changes in demand and pricing.
These are company-published figures, not an independently standardized comparison. Adjusted EPS policies are not guaranteed to match, and PPG’s 2024 divestitures complicate year-over-year comparisons of reported sales. The company results and filings provide detail on definitions and reconciliations: Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 year-end release and PPG’s 2025 Form 10-K.

For an investor, cash generation is a separate lens from earnings growth. The reported cash-flow figures provide a starting point, but they do not alone show how much cash is available after investment needs or make capital allocation directly comparable. PPG disclosed the cited 2025 dividend and repurchase totals; do not infer a matching Sherwin-Williams total from the figures above.
PPG’s $1.4 billion shareholder return was split between about $630 million of dividends and $790 million of repurchases. Those amounts are historical capital allocation, not a guarantee of future distributions. Repurchases can affect per-share results as well as cash balances, while dividends provide a cash payment to holders; neither should be evaluated in isolation from the company’s cash generation and needs. The available Sherwin-Williams figures establish $3.45 billion in net operating cash but do not provide a parallel shareholder-return total here, so the capital-return row cannot be used to declare a winner.
How do their outlooks compare?
As of July 28, 2026, management outlooks used different adjusted measures and assumptions. Treat them as dated forecasts, not promises, and avoid ranking the guidance numbers as directly comparable earnings targets.
| Outlook item | Sherwin-Williams | PPG Industries |
|---|---|---|
| Full-year 2026 EPS outlook | Raised diluted EPS guidance to $10.92–$11.32; adjusted diluted EPS guidance to $11.80–$12.20 | Reaffirmed adjusted EPS guidance of $7.70–$8.10 |
| Sales outlook | Expected full-year consolidated net sales to increase at a mid- to high-single-digit percentage versus 2025 | Expected third-quarter organic sales growth in the low- to mid-single-digit range |
| Demand and business conditions | Leading indicators pointed to continued second-half demand softness | Described strength in aerospace, Latin American architectural coatings and packaging, alongside inflation and uneven business conditions |
Sherwin-Williams’ full-year net-sales expectation and its warning about second-half softness can coexist: the forecast compares the whole year with 2025, while the caution describes the demand trend ahead. PPG’s cited organic-sales range is for the third quarter, not a full-year sales-growth forecast. PPG also flagged challenges from inflation and uneven conditions. Compare each forecast with the assumptions and period it actually covers. Sherwin-Williams’ outlook; PPG’s outlook
Sherwin-Williams raised both reported diluted EPS and adjusted diluted EPS guidance, but the two ranges are distinct measures: $10.92–$11.32 and $11.80–$12.20, respectively. PPG reaffirmed its adjusted EPS range. A reader should compare each forecast with that same company’s subsequent reported results and guidance updates, and check the period and definition before comparing one company’s number with another’s. Guidance captures management’s dated view of likely conditions; it is not a promise that results will land within the range.

The companies’ statements also reveal different emphases, rather than a clean forecast winner. Sherwin-Williams expected mid- to high-single-digit full-year consolidated sales growth while noting leading indicators pointed to softness in the second half. PPG cited aerospace, Latin American architectural coatings and packaging strength while acknowledging inflation and uneven business conditions. Those qualifications matter when evaluating what assumptions could support the earnings outlook.
How do dividend records and capital returns fit in?
Both companies have long records of annual dividend increases, but that history is not the same as current income yield. Sherwin-Williams reported 47 consecutive annual dividend increases as of December 31, 2025. PPG reported 54 consecutive annual increases and 126 successive years of annual dividend payments for fiscal 2025. PPG also said it returned $1.4 billion to shareholders in 2025, including about $630 million in dividends and $790 million in share repurchases. These company-reported records describe history, not future dividend growth or the current yield on either stock. Sherwin-Williams investor relations; PPG’s 2025 annual report

To compare dividend income, use the same-date share price and the current annualized dividend per share for each company. A long increase streak does not tell you which stock has the higher yield, and a yield comparison should not be substituted for an assessment of dividend affordability or total return.
Dividend growth history, current yield and total shareholder return answer separate questions. A streak reports how long a company has raised its dividend; yield relates the current annualized payment to the share price; total return also includes share-price changes and distributions. The available company disclosures support comparing the companies’ dividend histories and PPG’s 2025 capital-return amount, but they do not establish current dividend yields or dividend affordability for either company.

- Demand and cyclicality: Both businesses are exposed to construction, housing, manufacturing, transportation and other industrial activity. Sherwin-Williams said there was no meaningful demand improvement in Q2 2026 and pointed to second-half softness. PPG’s 2025 filing described mixed demand and expected challenges in Europe and global industrial end markets. Sherwin-Williams’ Q2 release; PPG’s 2025 Form 10-K
- Input costs and pricing: Sherwin-Williams said raw-material inflation pressured Q2 gross margin and described pricing actions. PPG reported increases in raw materials, energy, logistics and packaging costs, and described price actions intended to recover inflation. The effect depends on how quickly pricing offsets cost changes and how customers respond. Sherwin-Williams’ Q2 release; PPG’s Q2 release
- Segment-specific weakness: PPG’s weak Q2 refinish volumes weighed on Performance Coatings margins. Sherwin-Williams reported soft core North American do-it-yourself demand in its fiscal 2025 results. These are different exposures; track the relevant segment rather than assuming one company’s end-market conditions apply to the other. PPG’s Q2 release; Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 year-end release
- Acquisitions, divestitures and currency: Suvinil and currency contributed to Sherwin-Williams’ Consumer Brands sales increase; its Q2 EPS also included acquisition-related items. PPG’s 2025 reported sales comparisons reflect 2024 divestitures, while Q2 2026 reported sales included acquisition and foreign-currency effects. Separate those impacts from organic trends when judging execution.
- Foreign exchange, interest rates and leverage: PPG’s annual report discusses foreign-exchange and interest-rate exposure, raw-material costs and global demand. A full leverage comparison requires consistent, current balance-sheet data for both companies; the figures presented here are insufficient to rank their balance-sheet risk. PPG’s 2025 Form 10-K
These risks do not affect the two companies identically. Demand weakness in a particular segment can be obscured by growth elsewhere, as PPG’s Q2 Performance Coatings sales growth alongside lower segment income illustrates. Likewise, sales growth that includes acquired businesses or currency changes is not directly equivalent to same-business growth. Investors can monitor the next results for demand by end market, volume and pricing trends, margin response to input costs, and whether acquisition or currency contributions continue to shape reported growth.
Management commentary is useful evidence of what executives see, but it remains corporate commentary rather than independent industry analysis. Sherwin-Williams CEO Heidi G. Petz said the company remained focused on executing its customer-centered strategy and controlling what it could amid a challenging macroeconomic backdrop. PPG CEO Tim Knavish described its 4% organic sales increase as the sixth consecutive quarter of organic growth, with equal contributions from volumes and selling prices. Those remarks provide context for the companies’ framing of results; they do not replace the figures or establish future performance.
How to compare the stocks without confusing business quality and price
A stock can represent a strong business and still be expensive relative to its prospects; a lower valuation multiple does not automatically make a stock attractive. The operating information here supports a business comparison, not a current buy-or-sell verdict. No synchronized October 2026 prices, market capitalizations, price-to-earnings ratios, enterprise-value multiples or current dividend yields for both companies are established in the figures above.
- Set one price date. Obtain SHW and PPG closing share prices from the same trading day. Record the date and use the same currency and market-data convention.
- Choose the earnings basis. Calculate or source P/E ratios using the same period and a consistent definition—such as trailing reported GAAP EPS for both. If also using company-adjusted EPS, show it separately, identify each company’s definition and reconciliation, and do not imply the adjustments are identical.
- Compare growth on matching periods. Put reported sales growth next to organic growth, and note acquisitions, divestitures and foreign-currency effects. Check whether earnings growth came with margin changes and whether it reflects operating performance or adjustments.
- Examine segment drivers and risk. Compare the businesses tied to each company’s growth with their sales and profitability trends, then assess demand cyclicality, input costs and geographic exposures using the relevant filings.
- Assess cash and balance-sheet measures consistently. Use the same cash-flow and leverage definitions and comparable reporting dates. The cited annual cash-flow totals alone are not a complete leverage or financial-strength analysis.
- Calculate dividend yield from matched inputs. Divide each company’s current annualized dividend per share by the share price from the same date. Keep yield separate from dividend growth history and consider capital returned through repurchases separately.
- State the limits of the comparison. Date every price-based valuation measure, identify whether earnings are reported or adjusted, and explain any non-comparable definitions before drawing a conclusion.
For a valuation comparison, the practical minimum is a matched closing-price date plus an earnings period and definition that can be applied consistently to both firms. If using P/E, show the calculation basis—for example, share price divided by trailing reported GAAP EPS—and state the date and period. If showing enterprise-value multiples, use a consistent definition of enterprise value and the same earnings measure. The company releases and filings cited here do not provide synchronized market prices, market capitalizations, or current yield inputs, so no valuation ranking is justified here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOn the evidence available here, the fair conclusion is that Sherwin-Williams had the larger 2025 sales base and stronger reported Q2 EPS growth, while PPG delivered 4% Q2 organic sales growth with equal volume and pricing contributions and contrasting results among its segments. Neither observation establishes which shares offer better value at a given price.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which company had higher sales in 2025?
Sherwin-Williams reported $23.57 billion in fiscal 2025 net sales, compared with PPG’s $15.875 billion. The totals are reported sales, and PPG’s comparison with prior years is affected by divestitures completed in 2024. A larger sales base does not by itself establish better stock value or future growth.
Which company grew faster in the second quarter of 2026?
Reported net sales rose 7.5% year over year at Sherwin-Williams and 7% at PPG. PPG also reported 4% organic sales growth, split evenly between 2% volume growth and 2% selling-price growth. Sherwin-Williams did not state a consolidated organic-growth figure in the cited release, so the reported growth rates are not a complete like-for-like measure of underlying growth.
Can I compare SHW and PPG by their reported EPS amounts?
Not as a direct score. The companies have different share counts and businesses, and their reported and adjusted EPS figures reflect different items. Compare each company’s reported GAAP results and company-adjusted measures separately, review the reconciliations, and use a consistent earnings basis if calculating valuation ratios.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which stock is cheaper right now?
The information here does not establish synchronized current share prices, P/E ratios, enterprise-value multiples or dividend yields. To make that comparison, use prices from the same market close and apply consistent earnings periods and definitions. The available results alone cannot support a current cheaper-stock claim.
Which company has the higher dividend yield?
That cannot be determined from the dividend histories alone. Yield requires each company’s current annualized dividend per share divided by its share price from the same date. Sherwin-Williams reported 47 consecutive annual increases as of December 31, 2025; PPG reported 54 consecutive annual increases and 126 successive years of annual dividend payments for fiscal 2025, but these streaks do not establish current yield.
What should investors watch in the next results?
Track segment-level demand and profitability, volume and pricing, input-cost pressure and margins, and the contribution of acquisitions and currency to reported sales. Sherwin-Williams cited second-half demand softness and raw-material inflation; PPG reported weak refinish demand affecting Performance Coatings and cost increases across raw materials, energy, logistics and packaging. Also compare subsequent guidance with the assumptions and periods management originally described.
The Bottom Line
Sherwin-Williams had the larger 2025 sales base, and its reported Q2 2026 EPS rose faster year over year. PPG’s Q2 organic sales increased 4%, with equal contributions from volume and price, while results differed by segment. These business facts do not tell investors which shares are cheaper. A fair stock comparison needs matched-date prices, comparable earnings and balance-sheet measures, and current dividend inputs; those valuation data are not established here.
