Continuing a planned schedule can keep you from making a decision based on headlines and may buy more shares for the same amount when prices are lower. It does not predict a market bottom, prevent further losses, or make an unsuitable allocation appropriate.
What continuing to invest during a decline actually means
An S&P 500 index fund seeks to track an index of large U.S. companies. The index itself is not directly investable; investors hold funds, which have their own expenses and tracking differences. The available sources do not compare particular funds, so this is a decision about your investment plan, not a fund recommendation.

If you invest a fixed amount on a regular schedule, you are using dollar-cost averaging: equal contributions at regular intervals regardless of market direction. When a fund’s share price is lower, the same contribution buys more shares; when it is higher, it buys fewer. The schedule is a timing discipline, not a forecast that prices will rebound soon.

Decide whether your original plan still fits
A decline is a reason to review your circumstances, not an automatic instruction to sell, pause contributions, or invest more. Before changing course, consider when you will need the money, whether you can keep contributing, and whether the portfolio is still appropriate for the risk you can bear.
- Time horizon: If the money is for a near-term expense, a stock-heavy investment may expose you to a drop at the moment you need to withdraw. If the goal is far off, you may have more time to ride through volatility, but there is no guaranteed recovery schedule.
- Emergency savings and cash needs: Keep accessible savings for emergencies and planned expenses. If a financial shock could force you to sell investments at a loss, reassess how much you are investing and how much cash you need outside the fund.
- Ability to continue: A contribution schedule only works as a plan if it is affordable. If income has fallen or essential costs have risen, adjust contributions to protect your financial stability rather than borrowing or draining needed reserves to maintain an investment habit.
- Risk tolerance and allocation: An S&P 500 fund is U.S. large-company stock exposure, not a complete portfolio tailored to every investor. Review how much of your overall holdings are in stocks versus bonds and other assets, and whether that mix still fits your goal and ability to tolerate further losses. There is no universally appropriate stock-and-bond percentage.
If the allocation is out of line with a target you selected for your circumstances, consider rebalancing toward that target rather than making a new allocation decision based solely on recent market moves. Fidelity’s guidance emphasizes reviewing risk and goals; it does not prescribe a single allocation for everyone.
That distinction matters if the decline has made you realize that your portfolio is more volatile than you can live with. The answer is not necessarily to keep every contribution unchanged simply to prove discipline. Review the overall mix and the amount you are exposing to stocks. A portfolio review may lead you to a more suitable target, but changing course solely because recent prices are lower is still a reaction to short-term movement, not a substitute for deciding what risk fits your circumstances.

Continuing contributions is different from investing a new lump sum
Money that is already scheduled to be invested and extra cash that has just become available are two different decisions. Continuing a regular contribution follows a plan already in motion. Deciding what to do with a new lump sum asks whether to invest it at once or hold some of it back and phase it in.

| Choice for new cash | Potential advantage | Trade-off | Useful decision test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Invest the lump sum now | The full amount is invested rather than waiting in cash if prices rise. | The investment could fall further soon after purchase, making short-term losses larger than if entry had been phased. | Can you tolerate seeing the full amount exposed to a further decline without abandoning the plan? |
| Phase the money in on a schedule | A staged approach can feel less risky if you are concerned about investing immediately before another decline. | If prices rise during the period when some money remains in cash, you may buy fewer shares than if you had invested all at once. Delaying is itself a form of market timing. | Will you follow a specific schedule, or are you likely to keep postponing while waiting for a better entry point? |
Fidelity describes the comfort-versus-opportunity-cost trade-off of phasing in a lump sum; Vanguard notes that waiting in cash can miss returns if markets rise and calls delay a form of market timing. Neither source establishes one best choice for every investor. Select a method you can carry out consistently, based on your cash needs and tolerance for regret—not on a claim that anyone can identify the bottom.
Compare the two lump-sum choices on more than the possibility of a near-term loss. Consider how much short-term exposure you can tolerate, what you might give up if markets rise while cash waits, how you will feel about either decision if prices move against it, and whether you can actually follow the plan you choose. For ongoing contributions, the useful comparison is different: does continuing or changing the schedule fit your goal date, cash reserves, and ability to bear risk? Neither choice can be settled by knowing the market bottom in advance.
Vanguard puts the timing problem plainly: “Delaying an investment is itself a form of market-timing, something few investors can do successfully.” That does not mean every investor should invest every available dollar immediately. It means that waiting has a trade-off too, and a plan to phase money in should have a defined schedule rather than becoming an open-ended wait for certainty.

What market history can—and cannot—tell you
Historical declines show that substantial drops have occurred even within calendar years that investors may otherwise view as part of a longer investing period. Naveen Malwal, an institutional portfolio manager with Strategic Advisers, LLC, told Fidelity in 2026 that since 1980 the S&P 500 has experienced an average decline of about 14% in a calendar year. Fidelity defines that measure as the largest peak-to-trough drop in each calendar year. It is a historical average, not a prediction of the size or duration of the next decline.

Fidelity’s 2025 illustration of the 2008–09 downturn showed a hypothetical 70% stock/30% bond portfolio with a $400,000 initial balance and $15,000 in annual contributions taking 52 months to return to its pre-crisis high. That is one example under stated assumptions; it is not a general estimate for an S&P 500 fund or a promise about future recovery times.
A Fidelity guide using data as of March 31, 2015, reported S&P 500 five-year total returns following three historical market lows: 367% after May 1932, 267% after July 1982, and 178% after March 2009. Those dates were selected because they were followed by the best five-year market returns. They illustrate what happened in unusually strong historical periods, not what an investor should expect after any decline.
Past market patterns cannot tell you when a decline will end, and past performance does not guarantee future results. No broad-market recovery probability or guaranteed recovery time is established by these examples. They are context for uncertainty—not a reason to take more risk than you can afford.
The selected five-year examples are especially easy to misread if treated as typical outcomes: the lows were identified with the benefit of hindsight because they preceded the best five-year returns. They do not show what will follow the next market low, or even when that low will occur. Likewise, the 52-month recovery illustration refers to a hypothetical balanced portfolio with annual contributions, not a universal timeline for the index or for an individual account.

A practical way to make the decision
- Separate planned contributions from extra cash. Decide whether you are evaluating your existing schedule or a new lump sum; the choices have different trade-offs.
- Check your near-term finances. Confirm that emergency savings and money for upcoming expenses are adequate before committing more to stocks.
- Revisit the goal date and allocation. Ask when you will need the money and whether the stock exposure still fits your time horizon and tolerance for losses.
- If the plan remains suitable, keep the schedule rather than trying to call a bottom. A fixed contribution buys a changing number of shares; it does not make losses impossible.
- If your circumstances have changed, adjust for that reason. Lower contributions or a different allocation may be sensible when cash needs, income, goal timing, or risk capacity changes—not merely because prices are falling.
- For a new lump sum, choose a method you can stick with. Investing at once avoids leaving the full amount in cash while markets rise; phasing it in may feel more manageable but carries that opportunity cost. A schedule should be a deliberate plan, not an indefinite wait for certainty.
A disciplined plan is not the same as a prediction that prices will rise soon. Fidelity Viewpoints says, “Market timing, trying to buy and sell based on short-term moves in the market, is not the answer.” If a contribution schedule was chosen because it fits your long-term goal and current finances, following it can help avoid letting headlines dictate each decision. If the goal, financial capacity, or risk fit has changed, revisit the plan for that reason instead.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating a lower price as proof of a bargain: The market can decline further, and a fund can lose value after you buy.
- Assuming dollar-cost averaging prevents losses: It does not assure profit or protect against loss in a declining market.
- Confusing a disciplined schedule with an obligation to keep investing at any cost: Essential expenses, emergency savings, and financial stability come first.
- Using past recoveries as a timetable: Historical returns after selected lows do not forecast when a current decline will end.
- Putting near-term money into stocks because the market has fallen: If you may need to sell soon, the risk of being forced to withdraw after another decline matters more than the lower entry price.
- Calling a phased lump-sum plan risk-free: Holding part of the money in cash may reduce exposure to an immediate further drop, but it can also leave you with less invested if prices rise.
- Assuming one allocation fits everyone: Fidelity’s guidance does not prescribe a universal percentage for stocks and bonds. Your goal date, cash needs, and ability to tolerate losses matter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I pull out of an S&P 500 fund to avoid further losses?
Selling does not ensure you avoid losses; it can turn a decline into a realized loss, and no one can know from these historical examples when prices will recover. Review your time horizon, cash needs, and allocation instead of treating a decline alone as a sell signal. If you may need the money soon or cannot tolerate further losses, reassess whether the stock exposure fits.
Does dollar-cost averaging mean I will make money if I keep investing?
No. A fixed contribution may buy more shares when prices are lower and fewer when they are higher, but dollar-cost averaging does not assure a profit or protect against losses in a declining market. The fund can continue to fall after you invest.

Should I invest a new lump sum all at once or in installments?
There is no single best choice for every investor in the cited research. Investing at once avoids leaving the money in cash if prices rise, but exposes the full amount to a possible further decline. Phasing it in may feel more manageable, but can mean buying fewer shares if prices rise while some money is waiting. Consider your cash needs, tolerance for volatility and regret, and whether you will follow the chosen schedule.
Does the historical recovery data predict how long this decline will last?
No. The examples describe specific past periods and assumptions, including a hypothetical balanced portfolio that took 52 months to regain its previous high. They do not establish a recovery probability or timetable for an S&P 500 fund today.
The Bottom Line
Keep planned S&P 500 fund contributions only if they remain affordable and fit your time horizon, emergency savings, and risk allocation. A downturn does not by itself tell you to sell or invest more. Regular contributions can buy a changing number of shares, but they cannot prevent losses or predict recovery. Treat any new lump sum as a separate decision, weighing the risk of investing before another drop against the opportunity cost of waiting in cash.
