Keep your old phone if it still receives security updates, works reliably, and would be useful as a backup, travel phone, emergency spare, or dedicated device. Trade it in when you already have a replacement and the credit is meaningful without costly conditions. Sell it privately when realistic net cash is substantially higher than the trade-in offer. Recycle or donate it when the battery is unsafe, the device has no practical value, or it cannot be securely reset.
The right answer depends on more than age. Compare security support, battery health, repair costs, carrier locks, financing obligations, promotional-credit rules, privacy risks, and the phone’s replacement value to you.

Quick decision guide
| Situation | Usually best | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reliable phone with current software and modest trade-in value | Keep | A backup or secondary use may be worth more than a small credit. |
| Good-condition phone and substantial manufacturer credit | Trade in | Convenience and immediate purchase credit can outweigh a private sale. |
| Unlocked premium phone with strong resale demand | Sell privately | Net cash may materially exceed trade-in value. |
| Carrier “free phone” promotion | Calculate total obligation first | The benefit may be monthly credits tied to a plan and installment term. |
| Swollen battery, severe damage, or no secure reset | Recycle safely | Safety and data protection take priority over value. |
| No security updates but useful offline functions | Keep for low-risk tasks only | Do not use unsupported phones for banking or sensitive accounts. |
What is the old phone worth to you?
Separate three kinds of value:
- Market value: what a realistic buyer would actually pay, not an unsold listing price.
- Trade-in value: credit from a manufacturer, retailer, or carrier after eligibility checks.
- Promotional value: a larger advertised discount paid as monthly bill credits under specific service or financing conditions.
A carrier’s “up to” amount is not cash in hand. Credits can be delayed, reduced after inspection, or stopped if you change plans, leave the carrier, pay off financing early, or miss a deadline. Read the applicable terms, such as T-Mobile’s trade-in terms and Verizon’s device trade-in terms.
When keeping the phone makes sense
Backup and emergency use
A charged, working phone can help when your primary device is lost, stolen, damaged, in repair, or out of battery. Emergency calling without an active plan depends on network compatibility and local availability, so it is not guaranteed. Keep it charged, update it where possible, and test basic calling periodically.
#1 Best Overall
Travel and authentication
An unlocked phone may accept a destination SIM or eSIM and can hold maps, travel documents, or a separate camera. It can also remain an authentication device while you move accounts. Do not erase it until authenticator accounts, backup codes, banking apps, payment cards, and account-recovery methods work on the replacement.
Dedicated household device
Older phones can serve as Wi-Fi media players, e-readers, music players, fitness trackers, smart-home controllers, navigation devices, or cameras. A phone without current security updates should not hold banking credentials, password-manager data, work accounts, or other sensitive information. Remove unnecessary accounts and restrict it to low-risk uses.
Financial and environmental value
If the offer is small, preparation, packaging, shipping, and a possible dispute may not be worth it. Keeping a functional phone in use can postpone another purchase, although an unsafe battery or unusable device belongs in responsible recycling rather than storage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen trading in is the better choice
Trade-in is generally attractive when you are already buying a replacement, the credit materially lowers its cost, the phone meets condition requirements, and convenience matters more than maximum cash. Manufacturer programs provide a controlled process. Apple’s U.S. page lists estimated, model- and condition-dependent values and says eligible devices can produce purchase credit or an Apple Gift Card; devices without credit can still be recycled for free: Apple Trade In. Google Store estimates depend on exact manufacturer, model, and condition, are generally valid for 30 days, and are finalized after inspection: Google Store trade-in.
Do not trade solely because a phone is old. A supported, reliable phone with a modest offer may be more useful as a spare than as credit.

Carrier promotion versus ordinary trade-in
Before accepting a carrier offer, determine whether the quoted amount is immediate credit, store credit, a refund after inspection, or monthly bill credits. Then check:
- How many months credits continue.
- Which plan and line must remain active.
- What happens if you change plans or leave.
- Whether paying off the phone early ends credits.
- Taxes, activation, upgrade, and connection fees.
- Whether the phone must be paid off or unlocked.
- The exact submission deadline and condition rules.
- What happens after a downgrade and whether a rejected device can be returned.
Use total cost of ownership rather than the headline discount:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Total cost = device payments + required plan cost + fees + taxes − credits received.
For a hypothetical example, a $1,000 phone with an $800 credit paid as $33.33 per month for 24 months sounds generous. If the required plan costs $20 more each month than your preferred plan, the extra plan cost is $480, reducing the effective benefit to $320 before taxes and fees. The calculation changes with every offer.
When selling privately is worthwhile
Private sale can produce more cash, especially for an unlocked, high-storage, recent model, but compare expected net proceeds:

Advantages include cash, flexible timing, and no requirement to buy another phone. Disadvantages include photographing and listing the device, buyer messages, scams, chargebacks, returns, shipping, and meeting safety. Marketplaces such as eBay, Swappa, Back Market, and Best Buy trade-in are comparison destinations, not guaranteed best offers.
Battery, repair, and software tests
Battery and damage
- Keep it if battery life is acceptable or a reasonably priced replacement would extend a supported phone’s useful life.
- Trade or replace it if poor battery life, overheating, unexpected shutdowns, or charging failures impair use.
- Do not charge, mail, sell, puncture, or disassemble a swollen or damaged battery. Apple and Google exclude such devices from ordinary trade-in shipping; use the manufacturer, carrier, household-hazardous-waste program, or appropriate recycler.
Compare trade-in value after damage with repair cost plus the risk of revaluation and as-is private-sale value. Repairing solely to obtain a higher grade is usually uneconomic unless the incremental value clearly exceeds repair cost.
Software support and compatibility
Verify support for the exact model, region, and software version on the manufacturer’s official update page. A supported phone can remain a secure backup; an unsupported phone may still be an offline camera or music player but should not be used for banking, password management, work accounts, or sensitive messaging. Also check storage, Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, emergency-call capability, SIM or eSIM compatibility, and whether essential apps still run.
Condition and eligibility checklist
- Exact model, storage, color, carrier, and unlock status.
- Power-on, charging, cellular, Wi-Fi, buttons, cameras, microphone, speaker, and touch operation.
- Screen cracks, dead pixels, burn-in, frame or back-glass damage, liquid indicators, and replaced parts.
- Battery condition and any swelling or overheating.
- Find My, Activation Lock, Google device protection, passcodes, and other anti-theft locks disabled.
- Not reported lost or stolen and no undisclosed installment balance.
Google says trade-in devices can be rejected when they cannot power on or off, remain locked, are not factory-reset, are counterfeit, lost or stolen, or have a damaged or swollen battery. A phone that is still financed may continue to carry payment obligations after trade-in; confirm with the lender before surrendering it.

Prepare and erase the phone securely
Before any reset
- Back up photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, and app data.
- Transfer information and confirm banking, payment, messaging, and account-recovery access on the replacement.
- Remove payment cards, transit passes, the physical SIM, and microSD card.
- Record the IMEI or serial number and photograph the device powered on and from every side.
- For a company-managed phone, have the employer remove corporate profiles and data.
iPhone
- Use Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings.
- Follow prompts to erase the eSIM when transferring service.
- Sign out of the Apple Account as requested and confirm Find My and Activation Lock are disabled.
- If switching to Android, deregister iMessage.
Apple’s detailed preparation guidance is at Apple Support and its Android trade-in guidance at Apple’s Android preparation page.
Android and Pixel
- Back up data and remove Google and manufacturer accounts when instructed.
- Disable screen locks and device-finding protections.
- Remove SIM and memory cards.
- On Pixel, use Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data (factory reset), the Settings-based path Google recommends for trade-ins.
See Google Pixel factory-reset instructions and Google’s trade-in preparation guidance.
Shipping, inspection, and rejection
Save the original estimate, your condition answers, photos, receipt, tracking number, and the program’s return policy. Use supplied packaging and labels, obtain a drop-off receipt, and keep tracking until credit or payment is finalized. Apple says mail-in devices generally must arrive within 14 days of receiving the new device. Google says estimates are generally valid for 30 days and its process generally takes three to four weeks after shipment. Deadlines and procedures can change.
If the final offer is lower, compare the stated reason with your saved evidence, request the device’s return if the program allows it, and escalate through the vendor’s support channel. Do not send another device until the dispute is resolved.

- Keep: repurpose it for offline or low-risk tasks.
- Donate: give it to a family member or organization only after secure erasure and with honest disclosure of support status.
- Sell for parts: use only when the buyer understands the defects and battery condition.
- Recycle: use a manufacturer, retailer, carrier, or certified electronics recycler. Apple accepts devices for free recycling even without credit; Google provides recycling information at Google device recycling.
Never put lithium-ion batteries in household trash or curbside recycling. A swollen battery requires specialized handling, not ordinary shipping.
A practical scoring framework
Score each factor 0, 1, or 2 as a guide—not a validated financial formula.
| Factor | 0 | 1 | 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software support | Unsupported | Limited or uncertain | Current |
| Battery | Unsafe or failed | Weak | Good |
| Reliability | Unusable | Intermittent issues | Reliable |
| Backup usefulness | None | Possible | High |
| Trade-in credit | Negligible | Moderate | High |
| Private-sale advantage | Higher than trade-in | Similar | Much higher |
| Carrier obligation | Expensive or long | Moderate | None |
| Replacement need | Unnecessary | Nice to have | Already buying |
A high keep score favors keeping it; a high trade-in score favors trading; a strong private-sale advantage favors selling. An unsafe battery or failed security reset overrides the score and points to recycling.
