Churchill Downs reported that the victory was worth $3.1 million and raised Sovereignty’s career earnings to $3,672,800, with a record of 6-3-2-0. Is $3.1 million the owner’s take-home pay?
No. The $3.1 million is the race purse share awarded to the winning connections. It is not automatically the owner’s personal, after-tax income.
The final economics can involve agreements among the owner, trainer, jockey and other participants, along with expenses and taxes. The published race documents do not provide a complete contract-by-contract allocation, so a precise personal net figure for any individual connection cannot be calculated from the official payout alone.
Purse money versus betting handle
Churchill Downs Incorporated reported $234.4 million in all-sources wagering on the 2025 Kentucky Derby race. That figure is wagering handle—the amount bet—not money added to the purse and not the winner’s earnings.

First place received 62% of the guaranteed purse, calculated as $3.1 million divided by $5 million. The remaining 38% was allocated to second through fifth place under the official schedule. This percentage describes the purse distribution only; it does not describe the owner’s eventual net income.
