Shopify acquired Checkout Blocks in a deal announced on June 3, 2024. Financial terms were not disclosed. Checkout Blocks remains a Shopify App Store app, now operated and supported by Shopify, but the practical value of the product still depends heavily on a merchant’s plan: selected post-purchase features are available on Basic and higher, while most checkout-page and advanced rule capabilities generally require Shopify Plus.
The acquisition in brief
| Detail | What is known |
|---|---|
| Buyer | Shopify |
| Target | Checkout Blocks |
| Announcement | June 3, 2024 |
| Founder | Gil Greenberg |
| Financial terms | Not disclosed |

The transaction was reported by TechCrunch, which cited statements from Shopify and Greenberg. Shopify did not publicly disclose a purchase price, valuation, deal structure, retention terms, or employee headcount. This was an acquisition of an app, its product, and its team capabilities—not a replacement for Shopify Checkout itself.

What Checkout Blocks did before Shopify bought it
Checkout Blocks launched on Shopify on September 28, 2022, according to its App Store listing. Solo developer Gil Greenberg built it on Shopify’s Checkout Extensibility platform, giving merchants no-code tools for changing supported parts of checkout and the post-purchase experience.
Before the acquisition, the app offered tools for:
- Adding content blocks, banners, text, images, buttons, warnings, and upsell messages.
- Collecting custom information such as delivery notes, gift messages, and terms acknowledgements.
- Showing line-item messaging and, where supported, allowing variant or quantity edits.
- Validating address formats.
- Hiding, renaming, reordering, or conditionally displaying payment and delivery methods.
- Creating discounts and order-value limits based on conditions.
- Customizing Thank you and Order status pages.
In a January 2024 profile, Shopify said the app had reached hundreds of merchants in 46 countries, increased revenue by 50 times, and reached a top-three position during the preceding Black Friday/Cyber Monday period. Those are historical claims from Shopify’s profile, not current merchant-count or revenue figures. The profile is available at Shopify Partners.

Why Checkout Blocks mattered to Shopify
It demonstrated Shopify’s Checkout Extensibility model
Shopify has been moving merchants toward Checkout Extensibility: app-based UI extensions, Shopify Functions, branding tools, and platform-managed data instead of direct edits to Shopify’s checkout code.
That model is intended to be more upgrade-safe and performant than legacy checkout.liquid customizations. Checkout Blocks was an early, visible example of how merchants could implement common checkout requirements without building every extension internally.
The strategic significance is analysis rather than a separately disclosed explanation of the deal: owning a successful app gives Shopify more control over product direction, compatibility with new checkout APIs, documentation, support, and integration with Functions and UI extensions.

Larger and B2B merchants commonly need checkout logic for regional shipping restrictions, payment-method priorities, delivery notes, compliance acknowledgements, minimum or maximum order values, conditional messaging, and post-purchase instructions. Checkout Blocks packaged many of those use cases into a no-code interface rather than requiring a custom project for each one.

It fit Shopify’s migration away from legacy checkout customization
Shopify’s developer materials said checkout.liquid customizations for the Information, Shipping, and Payment pages were scheduled to be turned off on August 13, 2024. Older Thank you and Order status-page methods were scheduled for August 28, 2025. These were migration milestones, not a promise that every form of checkout customization disappeared; merchants are expected to use supported extensibility tools instead. Current migration requirements should be checked against Shopify’s latest documentation when planning a move.
What merchants can use today
The current Shopify App Store listing shows Checkout Blocks as free and lists Shopify as the developer and support provider. Free installation does not mean every feature is available on every plan.
Basic and higher plans
Merchants on Basic and higher can use selected Static Content and Dynamic Content blocks. On non-Plus plans, those blocks are limited primarily to the Thank you and Order status pages. That can cover post-purchase instructions, confirmation messaging, selected recommendations, and other content shown after an order is placed.
Shopify Plus
Shopify Plus is generally required for placing blocks on the actual checkout pages, including supported areas of the information, shipping, and payment steps. Advanced capabilities such as custom fields, address validation, payment-method customization, delivery-method customization, and conditional checkout rules are also generally Plus-only.

Shopify expanded selected Checkout Blocks functionality to all plans on December 11, 2024, but the expansion was specifically limited to supported Thank you and Order status-page features. It did not make full checkout editing available to every merchant. See the Shopify changelog and Help Center overview.
Recent product maintenance
On March 31, 2026, Shopify began upgrading Checkout Blocks to a newer API version in a gradual rollout over two weeks. Shopify said the update changed some visual details—including text-size mappings, divider thickness, and accordion icon color—but did not affect checkout functionality, data collection, or order processing, and required no merchant action. Stores should still visually review checkout after significant app or API updates. The announcement is documented in the Shopify changelog.
Who benefits most?
| Merchant situation | Likely fit |
|---|---|
| Basic, Grow, or Advanced store needing a Thank you-page message | Good fit if the native editor does not already meet the need. |
| Shopify Plus store needing checkout-page content or rules | Strong fit, especially for no-code implementation. |
| B2B business with payment or delivery constraints | Potentially strong fit, subject to the exact supported rule and plan. |
| Merchant collecting delivery notes, gift messages, or acknowledgements | Useful, but data storage, access, and downstream workflow should be reviewed first. |
| Store migrating from checkout.liquid | Potentially useful as part of a supported Checkout Extensibility migration. |
| Business requiring a completely bespoke checkout layout or unrestricted code | Poor fit; Shopify’s extension model still imposes platform and API constraints. |
Limits and operational risks
Plan restrictions can make a feature appear missing
If a block cannot be placed where expected, first confirm the store’s Shopify plan and the permitted page surface. A merchant may be able to create a block for a Thank you page while being unable to place comparable content on the payment or shipping step.

Shopify’s block documentation states that merchants can have up to 30 active blocks per block type. If a block does not appear, check whether the limit has been reached, whether the block is active, whether its display rules are satisfied, and whether its placement or priority sends it somewhere else. The relevant block overview also covers display rules and placement.

Uninstalling the app can remove important customizations
Shopify warns that payment and delivery customizations created through Checkout Blocks are automatically deactivated and removed if the app is uninstalled. Do not treat uninstalling as a risk-free trial step on a live store. Document the current configuration, test a replacement, and confirm the expected rollback before removing the app.
Custom fields create data and privacy responsibilities
A custom field is not merely decorative. It collects customer input that may affect fulfillment, customer service, reporting, and privacy obligations. Before collecting sensitive or operationally important information, confirm where it is stored, which staff or systems can access it, how it reaches fulfillment workflows, and what happens when an order is edited or refunded.
Checkout changes can add friction
Extra banners, required acknowledgements, fields, and conditional messages may solve a business problem while making checkout slower or less clear. Keep required inputs limited to information the business genuinely needs, and test the experience across desktop, mobile, accelerated checkout methods, and the store’s main shipping and payment combinations.

Implementation may require staff access to relevant content or metaobject permissions as well as Checkout Blocks app permissions. If an administrator can configure a block but a staff member cannot maintain it, review role settings before treating the behavior as a product defect.

Shopify’s native checkout editor and extensions
The native editor is the simplest starting point for merchants whose needs fit Shopify’s built-in capabilities. It reduces vendor dependence and benefits from Shopify-managed compatibility, but advanced extensions may require development knowledge and availability varies by plan and extension type.
Best Value
- The kit comes with one barcode scanner, one cradle, one battery, one USB cable and manual.
- Eliminate Bluetooth Interference with Zebra’s Proprietary Wi-Fi Friendly Mode------Ensure that your wireless DS2278 Bluetooth imagers only operate on channels that are not shared with your WLAN, protecting WLAN service levels for your workers and your customers.
- Unsurpassed Scanning Range------Workers can scan barcodes across a wide range (0.5 in./1.23 cm to 14.5 in./36.8 cm), improving checkout speed and reducing training time.
- Pre-configured and Ready to Use, Right Out of the Box------Since the default settings are optimized for the majority of scanning applications, you can use the DS2278-SR imager the moment you take it out of the box — no configuration required. With omni-directional scanning, users never need to line up the imager and the barcode — unlike 1D scanners.
- Control Your Scanners from a Smartphone, Tablet or PC------You can easily control the beeper, LED and Symbology settings; display scanned barcode data; access model and serial number information and more from Windows, Android and iOS hosts.
Custom Checkout UI Extensions and Shopify Functions
These are better for Plus merchants with internal engineers or an agency and requirements specific enough to justify custom development. They provide more control within Shopify’s supported architecture, but introduce development, testing, maintenance, and migration costs. They do not restore unrestricted control over checkout code.
Specialized checkout apps
A specialized app may be more appropriate when the need is narrow—for example, a survey, address-validation workflow, upsell, or payment-method rule. The choice should be based on the exact feature, plan compatibility, data handling, support model, and uninstall behavior. Current prices, ratings, rankings, and superiority claims for unnamed alternatives should not be assumed without fresh verification.
What the acquisition means for users and investors
For merchants, the immediate story is practical: a Shopify-operated app offers a broad set of checkout and post-purchase tools, with selected functionality available at no app charge. Shopify Plus merchants receive the greatest benefit because the most commercially important checkout surfaces and advanced rules remain concentrated there.
For Shopify’s platform strategy, the deal reinforces a shift from fragile, merchant-maintained checkout code to managed extensions and Functions. It also shows how Shopify can bring a successful ecosystem capability into its own product and support structure. That may improve compatibility and continuity, but it also increases dependence on Shopify’s roadmap and reduces the separation between the platform and a major solution in the category.
The acquisition does not establish a measured conversion lift, eliminate the need for custom development, or make unrestricted checkout customization available to all Shopify merchants.
