Phlair’s Carbon-Sucking Technology Could Lower Direct Air Capture’s Costs

Phlair’s Hydrolyzer replaces high-temperature solvent regeneration with an electrochemical pH swing. That could lower direct air capture’s energy and operating costs, but larger-scale performance and the company’s $100–$200-per-tonne target have not yet been demonstrated.

Phlair could make direct air capture (DAC) cheaper, but it has not yet proved that it can deliver commercial carbon removal at low cost. The German startup’s Hydrolyzer uses electrochemistry to regenerate a carbon-capturing liquid without the high-temperature regeneration used by many thermal DAC systems. Phlair says this could cut energy requirements by three times compared with thermal approaches and allow plants to use intermittent renewable electricity more flexibly. Those are company claims and engineering targets—not independently verified commercial economics.

As of August 18, 2026, Phlair has described a 10-tonne-per-year pilot in Germany, a Canadian pilot of up to 20 tonnes per year, and larger projects that remain planned. Its first major commercial project, Dawn, is listed at more than 15,000 tonnes per year from 2030 or later, with a long-term target cost of $100–$200 per tonne of CO₂.

Why direct air capture is so expensive

DAC removes carbon dioxide from ordinary air, where CO₂ is highly diluted compared with emissions from an industrial smokestack. A plant must move large volumes of air through contactors, selectively absorb the CO₂, regenerate the capture medium, purify and compress the gas, then transport and permanently store it.

Thermal DAC systems commonly use heat, and sometimes vacuum or pressure changes, to release CO₂ from a sorbent or solvent. That creates several cost pressures:

  • Heat-generating equipment and other capital-intensive infrastructure.
  • Degradation, replacement and disposal of capture materials.
  • Access to low-carbon energy and permanent geological storage.
  • Monitoring, verification, financing, insurance and project-development costs.

It is also important to distinguish three figures that are often blurred together:

  • Capture cost: the cost of separating CO₂ from air.
  • Removal cost: capture plus compression, transport, storage, monitoring, maintenance, financing and related costs.
  • Carbon-credit price: what a buyer pays for a verified removal certificate. This may include margins, delivery risk and project-finance costs and is not automatically the technology’s underlying cost.

How Phlair’s Hydrolyzer works

Phlair’s process uses an inorganic salt solution and a modular electrochemical stack called the Hydrolyzer. The system creates acid and base from water and salt. That chemistry produces a pH swing that drives CO₂ in and out of the capture liquid.

  1. Air passes through an absorber, where a liquid solution captures CO₂.
  2. The CO₂-loaded solution moves through the process loop.
  3. The Hydrolyzer changes the solution’s acidity using electrochemical reactions.
  4. The pH change releases concentrated CO₂ from the liquid.
  5. The capture solution is recycled to absorb more CO₂.
  6. The released CO₂ is compressed for permanent storage or, where appropriate, use in products.

The proposed advantage is not merely that the system uses electricity. Most DAC systems use electricity somewhere. Phlair’s approach is intended to replace the need to heat the entire solvent-regeneration system to high temperatures with electrochemical work that creates the necessary acid and base conditions.

Why this approach could reduce costs

Less heat could mean less energy

Thermal regeneration can require heating solvents, water and associated equipment. Phlair says its Hydrolyzer requires three times less energy than thermal DAC approaches. That comparison needs a defined baseline: it should specify which thermal system is being compared, whether “energy” means electricity, heat, primary energy or total operating energy, and whether air handling, compression and storage are included.

Until those boundaries and results are independently validated, the three-times figure should be treated as a company-reported claim rather than a settled industry benchmark.

Flexible operation may fit renewable power

Phlair says the Hydrolyzer can ramp up or down with behind-the-meter solar generation. Running when electricity is cheaper could reduce exposure to high grid prices and improve the economics of a plant located near abundant renewable power. The company describes the process as behaving partly like a chemical battery because it can use electricity flexibly.

Flexibility creates a trade-off, however. Operating mainly during low-cost solar hours can reduce a plant’s annual operating hours. A project must show that lower electricity prices compensate for leaving expensive equipment idle. It also needs to demonstrate stable capture performance during frequent cycling and decide whether grid power is used when solar output falls.

Modular stacks may simplify manufacturing

Phlair says the Hydrolyzer uses components and supply chains associated with existing hydrogen technologies and is designed around industrial modular stacks. Repeatable modules could be manufactured and deployed more easily than a single custom-built plant.

Modularity is not a guarantee of low cost. The company still has to prove manufacturing yield, membrane lifetime, stack replacement costs, power-electronics costs, balance-of-plant expenses and maintenance requirements. Air contactors, compressors, storage facilities and controls also remain part of the system.

Inorganic chemistry may avoid some degradation problems

Phlair and European Union project documentation emphasize inorganic salt chemistry and identify the instability and degradation of some organic sorbents as a problem the technology is designed to avoid. That does not mean the system is degradation-free. Membranes, catalysts and other components can age, while corrosion, scaling, contamination, leakage and electrolyte management can create their own costs.

What Phlair has actually demonstrated

Project or milestone Publicly described status What it shows
Electra 00 10 tonnes of CO₂ per year in Ismaning, Germany; operational since the first quarter of 2025 An outdoor pilot using commercial-scale Hydrolyzer and absorber components
Electra 02 Up to 20 tonnes per year in Canada; listed for the fourth quarter of 2025 A test of operation in sub-zero winter conditions
Commercial skid A 1,000-tonne-per-year unit described in EU project reporting A proposed building block for larger plants
Dawn More than 15,000 tonnes per year; launch listed as 2030+ Phlair’s first listed large commercial facility, not an operating plant

The European Commission’s CORDIS project report says Phlair completed and leak-tested a single-digit-cell stack that matched single-cell performance. It also describes a 42-cell stack under development and ongoing work on stack lifetime and manufacturing readiness. This is evidence of technical progress, but it also shows that the central scale-up questions were still being worked on in the latest public reporting.

The jump from the 10-tonne Electra 00 pilot to Dawn’s planned capacity is roughly 1,500-fold. Commercial success will require reliable operation across many modules, automated controls, long-duration stack performance, safe electrolyte management, economical air handling and integration with CO₂ transport and storage.

Dawn and the proposed Norway deployment

Phlair’s Dawn project is listed at more than 15,000 tonnes of annual removal capacity, with a launch date of 2030 or later. Phlair says it could eventually expand the initial facility toward 200,000 tonnes per year, use behind-the-meter solar and achieve a long-term cost target of $100–$200 per tonne of CO₂. The target is not a current public purchase price and should not be described as an achieved cost.

There is also a timing discrepancy in public statements. A Shopify interview says the company expects to receive permanent-removal credits from Dawn from 2027, while Phlair’s current project page lists Dawn as 2030+. Those dates could reflect a schedule change, an earlier delivery tranche or different project assumptions. The current Phlair project page is the more recent public schedule unless the company clarifies the difference.

Separately, Phlair and Carbon Removal AS announced a proposed project near Norway’s Northern Lights storage terminal. The initial phase is described as targeting 60,000 tonnes per year, with a possible later phase reaching 500,000 tonnes per year. Phlair would supply Hydrolyzer modules and engineering support, while NorDAC would handle other infrastructure, development and operations. This is a development partnership—not proof that a 500,000-tonne facility has been financed, built or commissioned.

What the cost claims mean

Claim How to interpret it
Three times lower energy than thermal DAC Phlair’s claim; the comparison and system boundary require independent validation
$100–$200 per tonne of CO₂ Phlair’s long-term Dawn cost target, not an available public price
More than 15,000 tonnes per year Planned Dawn capacity, not current production
Up to 500,000 tonnes per year in Norway Potential later scale for a proposed project
Commercially proven low-cost DAC Not demonstrated publicly as of August 18, 2026

A lower-energy regeneration step could still produce an expensive removal system if Hydrolyzer stacks, membranes, air contactors, compressors, storage infrastructure or financing are costly. Investors and corporate buyers should ask for electricity use per tonne of net removal, capacity factor, stack replacement assumptions and the full cost boundary—not just the regeneration figure.

Net removal and storage matter as much as capture

Capturing CO₂ is not automatically the same as permanently removing it from the atmosphere. A credible assessment must account for the electricity source, equipment manufacturing, transport, compression, storage and replacement components. It must also distinguish gross capture from net removal.

A publicly available Phlair-related lifecycle-assessment document models a 260-tonne-per-year pilot configuration and reports an approximate net reduction of 679 kilograms of CO₂ per tonne removed under its stated assumptions. That figure is model-specific, depends on factors such as the electricity mix, transport, storage and system boundaries, and may not represent the current design.

Permanent geological storage is especially important for durable DAC credits. Using CO₂ in products can create a market, but utilization does not necessarily keep the carbon out of the atmosphere for the required duration. Buyers should examine the storage site, injection plan, monitoring, verification, permanence period and remedies for leakage or non-delivery.

Advance purchases can help finance first-of-a-kind plants and give a startup demand before a project is operating. They do not prove technical success or open-market cost competitiveness. Offtake contracts may contain delivery conditions, confidential prices, right-of-first-offer provisions and other terms that make the true market price difficult to determine.

For a corporate buyer, Phlair is a higher-risk, future-delivery option rather than an ordinary consumer purchase. The company’s public material does not show a standard self-service price, subscription plan, equipment price or license fee. A buyer should request the price per verified tonne, delivery year, storage location, certification method, electricity and lifecycle accounting, project-finance status, and remedies for delayed or failed delivery.

How to judge whether Phlair can really lower DAC costs

  1. Energy: Check whether reported energy use includes air movement, solvent circulation, compression and storage.
  2. Utilization: Compare cheap renewable electricity with the capacity factor of a plant that operates intermittently.
  3. Durability: Request membrane, catalyst and stack-life data, along with maintenance and replacement schedules.
  4. Capture performance: Examine CO₂ loading and release rates under different humidity, temperatures and contaminants.
  5. Capital cost: Include the Hydrolyzer, air contactors, power electronics, compression, storage, land, permitting and interconnection.
  6. Net removal: Confirm the electricity mix, lifecycle emissions, storage permanence and monitoring methodology.
  7. Bankability: Look for firm offtake contracts, construction financing, insurance and performance guarantees.
  8. Location: Favor sites with dependable clean power, water, infrastructure and nearby permanent storage.

Verdict

Phlair has a credible engineering hypothesis: electrochemical pH-swing regeneration could reduce heat demand, make DAC more compatible with flexible renewable electricity and support modular deployment. Its pilots, EU-supported development work and planned commercial projects show meaningful progress.

But “could lower costs” is the accurate conclusion—not “has already delivered cheap DAC.” The decisive evidence will be sustained operation of larger stacks, verified net-removal results, manufacturing at volume and delivery of permanent credits near the company’s $100–$200-per-tonne target. Until then, Phlair is a promising but technically and commercially unproven route to lower-cost DAC.
