James Bord’s consortium withdrew its proposed Sheffield Wednesday takeover on 25 February 2026, saying due diligence had made its bid unjustifiable. A Times report about a civil case involving Bord and a former business partner appeared shortly before that withdrawal, but available reporting does not establish that the case caused Mike Ashley to change his position. The takeover process later concluded with Arise Capital Partners acquiring the club, which the EFL said had exited administration by 2 May 2026.
What happened to James Bord’s Sheffield Wednesday takeover bid?
Bord’s consortium was named preferred bidder on 24 December 2025, after Sheffield Wednesday entered administration in October. On 25 February 2026, the consortium withdrew. BBC Sport reported the proposed takeover was valued at £47.8 million and reproduced the consortium’s explanation that due diligence showed the offer could no longer be justified. The figure and explanation are reported by BBC and the consortium; they are not independently audited findings.
The consortium also said it had spent more than £4 million helping run the club during the process, as reported by BBC. That amount is the consortium’s own claim, not an independently verified accounting figure. In its statement, it said: “To all the long-suffering fans of this great club, it is with the greatest regret that we have decided not to pursue our bid to become your new custodians.” It also described the club’s history as one of “historic mishandling” and “catastrophic underinvestment”; those are the bidder’s characterisations, not independent findings.

What was the court case involving Bord?
The Times reported on 16 February 2026 that former business partner Jonathan Cohen was suing Bord over Cohen’s investment in Córdoba, a Spanish second-tier club connected to Bord. The report described a civil claim; it is not a court judgment, a finding of wrongdoing, or proof that Bord failed the EFL owners’ and directors’ test.
The Times discussed a provision in the EFL test concerning an unsatisfied monetary judgment after appeal rights have been exhausted. Its report assessed the risk of failing the test because of a civil case—particularly one abroad—as low. That was the newspaper’s assessment, not an official EFL determination or legal advice. The report does not establish the case’s final outcome.

Did Mike Ashley rethink his bid because of the case?
BBC reporting identified Mike Ashley as one of the bidders during the takeover process. The sources available do not show that Ashley changed his bid or reconsidered it because of the Bord-Cohen dispute. The timing of a lawsuit and a bidder’s decision is not evidence that one caused the other.

There is not enough verified, like-for-like information about all bidders’ financing, terms, and ownership plans to rank their proposals. The record supports saying Ashley was reported as a bidder, but not that the case drove a rethink.

The EFL announced on 2 May 2026 that the administrators had formally agreed to transfer Sheffield Wednesday’s assets to Arise Capital Partners LLC, a consortium led by David Storch alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The league said the club met its requirements, was no longer in administration, and would not receive the contemplated 15-point deduction following its exit.
