The EFL confirmed the club had left administration and said it would not impose a separate, prospective 15-point deduction. The “out of business” warning was made in March and was conditional—not a report that the club had closed or that closure was certain.
What happened to the Sheffield Wednesday takeover?
The transaction proceeded in stages. Arise Capital Partners was named preferred bidder in March 2026 after an earlier preferred bidder withdrew. That selection was not itself a completed sale: completion came on 2 May, when the administrators concluded an asset-transfer agreement with Arise. The EFL then said Sheffield Wednesday had met the relevant League requirements and was no longer in administration. EFL, 2 May 2026
Why was there talk of the club going out of business?
On 18 March 2026, The72 reported that Sheffield South East MP Clive Betts had warned the club could go “out of business” if the preferred bidder failed to reach agreement with the EFL. The warning was conditional and reflected uncertainty at that point in the sale process; it should not be read as proof that closure was imminent. The later completion of the Arise deal changed the outcome. The72, 18 March 2026
How did Arise become the preferred bidder?
On 10 March 2026, Sheffield Wednesday announced that Arise Capital Partners LLC had been selected as preferred bidder after the previous preferred bidder withdrew. The club identified the consortium as comprising David Storch, Michael Storch and Tom Costin, and said it had provided a substantial deposit and evidence of funds. The exclusivity agreement also included funding for trading losses if completion took longer than eight weeks. These were terms and assurances reported at the preferred-bidder stage, not a statement that the asset transfer had already completed. Sheffield Wednesday, 10 March 2026

What happened to the points deductions?
Two different point decisions are involved. The 12-point deduction followed the club’s entry into administration in October 2025. The separate 15-point deduction was prospective and related to the club’s exit from administration. The EFL decided not to apply that second deduction after the takeover completed.
| Points | What it related to | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | Automatic deduction after Sheffield Wednesday entered administration on 24 October 2025. | Applied. The EFL confirmed the deduction when administrators were appointed to the club and the company owning Hillsborough. EFL, 24 October 2025 |
| 15 | Prospective deduction considered in connection with the club exiting administration. | Not imposed after the asset transfer and exit from administration. EFL, 2 May 2026 |
The 15 points were not an additional deduction that had already been taken and then restored. They were a separate sanction the EFL chose not to impose. The two figures therefore describe different decisions, at different stages.

What did the EFL say about Dejphon Chansiri?
The EFL said that proposals had been made to former owner Dejphon Chansiri by the administrators and the new ownership, and that it considered those proposals when deciding whether to impose the prospective 15-point deduction. Its statement does not establish that Chansiri made a specific “plea,” what any such plea contained, or his motive. EFL, 2 May 2026
