James Bord’s consortium was named Sheffield Wednesday’s preferred bidder in December 2025, but it did not buy the club. The group withdrew in February 2026; Arise Capital Partners later took over, completing the purchase on 2 May 2026. The distinction matters: “preferred bidder” marked progress in an administration sale, not a completed change of ownership.

What “preferred bidder” meant in Sheffield Wednesday’s administration

On 24 December 2025, BBC Sport reported that the administrators had selected a potential buyer to move forward with after extensive due diligence. Joint administrator Paul Stanley’s statement referred to “following extensive financial, legal and forensic due diligence, supported by specialist advisors”. That selection was an intermediate stage in the sale process; it did not mean the buyer had completed the purchase or taken ownership. BBC Sport, 24 December 2025.

Who was first selected, and what happened to that bid?

James Bord’s consortium

The first reported preferred-bidder group was associated with James Bord, Felix Romer and Alsharif Faisal Bin Jamil. BBC Sport described it as privately funded. On 25 February 2026, the BBC reported that the consortium had withdrawn from the process. Its proposed offer was reported at £47.8 million. Because the group withdrew, that figure was not the completed sale price. BBC Sport, 25 February 2026.

How Arise Capital Partners became the replacement bidder

After Bord’s consortium withdrew, administrators needed another buyer. Arise Capital Partners, led by David Storch, was later named preferred bidder. BBC Sport reported an Arise bid figure of £20 million on 15 April 2026. The same report said the EFL had communicated a prospective 15-point deduction for the following season, linked to the creditor-return terms then reported. It said the offer was understood to provide unsecured creditors with about 6 pence in the pound, below a 25-pence threshold described in connection with avoiding the deduction. The 6-pence figure was a contemporaneous estimate, not a final distribution to creditors. BBC Sport, 15 April 2026.

What the completed takeover changed

Arise Capital Partners completed the takeover on 2 May 2026. The EFL said it would not impose the prospective points deduction, describing the situation as unusually challenging and complex. The earlier 15-point sanction was therefore not imposed following completion. BBC Sport, 2 May 2026.

Bid stages and outcome at a glance

Stage Bidder Reported value or creditor terms Status
First preferred bidder, December 2025 James Bord’s consortium, associated with Felix Romer and Alsharif Faisal Bin Jamil Offer reported at £47.8 million when the group withdrew in February 2026. Selected to progress, but did not complete the purchase; withdrew on 25 February 2026. BBC Sport
Replacement preferred bidder, April 2026 Arise Capital Partners, led by David Storch £20 million bid reported; estimated unsecured-creditor return of about 6 pence in the pound, against a 25-pence threshold associated with avoiding a prospective 15-point deduction. Completed the takeover on 2 May 2026; the EFL did not impose the prospective deduction. The creditor figure was an estimate, not a final distribution. BBC Sport

What the reported figures do—and do not—establish

The £47.8 million figure belongs to Bord’s withdrawn proposal; the £20 million figure and estimated creditor return were reported in connection with Arise’s bid before completion. They should not be treated as two completed transactions or as final payments to creditors. BBC coverage did not establish the full terms of the completed sale or the final distribution to each creditor class, so those details cannot be inferred from the earlier bid reporting.
