What happened to Danny Röhl?
A FourFourTwo report in 2025 said Röhl left Sheffield Wednesday in summer 2025. The sources available for this update do not establish his current role or a new development involving him in October 2026, so his departure is historical context rather than a current managerial change. FourFourTwo report, 2025.
How much did Sheffield Wednesday owe?
The widely cited £64m figure was a loan claim attributed by BBC Sport to former owner Dejphon Chansiri. It is a reported claim, not a verified final balance of the club’s debts. The eventual arrangements treated different creditor groups differently; the £64m figure should not be read as an amount paid in full at the time of the sale. BBC Sport, 6 May 2026.
| Creditor or obligation | What BBC Sport reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Football creditors and HMRC | They were to be paid in full. | These were separate creditor categories in the reported arrangement. |
| Other unsecured creditors, including local businesses | They were to receive 25p per pound promptly. | The report described this as the immediate return for this group, not full repayment. |
| Chansiri’s reported loan claim | The report described a deferred offer intended to amount to roughly 25p per pound if the club achieved future success. It said Chansiri’s acceptance arrived after the deadline and he might receive nothing, subject to challenge. | This was contingent and disputed in timing; it should not be described as a settled £64m payment. |
| Hillsborough-backed loan charge | BBC Sport said an outstanding charge of about £7m was cleared after the takeover. | This was a separate secured charge, not the same thing as the reported £64m loan claim. |
BBC Sport also described 25p per pound as the EFL’s general unsecured-creditor benchmark for avoiding the prospective deduction. The figure concerns the reported insolvency arrangements; it does not mean every creditor received the same payment or on the same timetable.

Two different sanctions are easy to confuse. Wednesday received an 18-point deduction during the 2025/26 season: 12 points for entering administration and six for other financial breaches, according to BBC Sport. The EFL later chose not to impose a separate, prospective 15-point deduction when the club exited administration. BTG said Wednesday would begin the upcoming season on zero points.
