Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover was completed by US consortium Arise Capital Partners on 2 May 2026—not by Mike Ashley or John Textor. The EFL confirmed the club had exited administration and that it would not impose an additional 15-point deduction. The deal was completed before the Independent Football Regulator’s (IFR) new-owner process was due to begin on 5 May; the available reports do not establish a separate IFR verdict on the transaction.
Who bought Sheffield Wednesday?
Arise Capital Partners LLC completed an agreement to acquire Sheffield Wednesday’s assets on 2 May 2026. The EFL said the club met its requirements and was no longer considered to be in administration. The BBC reported that the takeover ended Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.
Arise was named the club’s preferred bidder on 10 March 2026, after the previous preferred bidder withdrew. Sheffield Wednesday’s sale-process update identified David Storch, Michael Storch and Tom Costin as members of the consortium and said it had provided a substantial deposit and evidence of funds. Sheffield Wednesday’s 10 March sale-process update records that stage; the EFL’s 2 May statement confirms completion.
Mike Ashley update: was he the buyer?
No. BBC Sport identified Mike Ashley as one of the bidders during the sale process, but the completed transaction was with Arise Capital Partners. The cited sources do not establish a current Ashley bid, ownership role or later development after completion. He should therefore be described as a reported bidder, not Sheffield Wednesday’s new owner. BBC Sport’s bidder-process report and the EFL’s completion statement identify those distinct stages.

What happened with John Textor and Chansiri?
John Textor’s reported interest belongs to an earlier period. The Guardian reported on 27 August 2025 that Textor had registered interest with Chansiri and was seeking talks. That report came before the club entered administration and before the later preferred-bidder process; it does not establish that a bid was made or that talks continued through the administration sale. The Guardian’s report also described an asking price thought to be about £100 million at the time, not a confirmed sale price.
Was there an IFR verdict on the takeover?
The EFL announced the completion and its points decision on 2 May 2026. BBC Sport reported that the IFR’s new-owner process was due to take over from the EFL on 5 May, after the takeover paperwork had been completed. That timing does not amount to evidence that the IFR approved or rejected this transaction.

BBC Sport quoted IFR chair David Kogan saying, “Sheffield Wednesday’s experience is a timely reminder of why the IFR was established in the first place.” Kogan also said that from the following week, new owners, directors and senior executives in the top five divisions would be assessed by the IFR. Those remarks describe the regulator’s role and the circumstances around the handover; they are not a transaction-specific ruling. BBC Sport’s 2 May report covers the timing and quotations.
Why was the extra 15-point deduction waived?
The EFL Board said it had exercised discretion under its Insolvency Policy, taking account of proposals made to Chansiri by the administrators and the new ownership. The EFL confirmed that it would not impose the additional 15-point deduction after the club’s transfer to Arise.

That decision was separate from the automatic 12-point deduction imposed when Sheffield Wednesday entered administration on 24 October 2025. The EFL’s statement at the time said the administration triggered that deduction under league regulations. The 15 points were an additional potential penalty, not the same deduction being reversed. See the EFL’s administration statement and its statement on the completed takeover.
Sky Sports reported that the EFL Board was satisfied Storch had made every possible attempt to negotiate, and that other Championship clubs objected to the waiver. It also reported that the EFL was expected to review its insolvency policy. That was a report of a prospective review, not confirmation that the policy was subsequently changed. Sky Sports’ 4 May report gives that account.
