Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover is no longer an open Mike Ashley bid story: on 2 May 2026, the English Football League (EFL) confirmed an agreement with Arise Capital Partners LLC, led by David Storch, and said the club had left administration. The EFL also said it would not impose the 15-point deduction it had been considering for the administration exit. Ashley had been reported as a participant in an earlier auction, while merger talk with Sheffield United remained media discussion—not a confirmed or EFL-approved transaction.
Sheffield Wednesday takeover news: what is confirmed now?
The latest located official update is the EFL’s 2 May 2026 announcement. It said administrators had concluded an agreement with Arise Capital Partners LLC, led by David Storch, that Sheffield Wednesday had met the League’s requirements and that the club “is therefore no longer regarded as in Administration.” The EFL said it had exercised discretion not to apply the contemplated 15-point deduction following the exit.
That announcement is the decisive status update for the takeover story. It supersedes speculation about who might buy the club: the EFL named Arise as the party to the completed agreement, not Mike Ashley. Did Mike Ashley buy Sheffield Wednesday?
No. The available reporting places Ashley among six parties in an earlier auction, but does not identify him as the successful purchaser. On 25 February 2026, The Guardian reported that the consortium led by James Bord had withdrawn after due diligence led it to conclude that it had offered too much. That was a setback in the earlier buyer process, not confirmation of an Ashley purchase. The subsequent EFL announcement identified the Arise agreement.

In November 2025, talkSPORT discussed reports that Sheffield United’s US owners had looked at buying Wednesday, with a possible merger, and also mentioned Ashley as a potential contender. Simon Jordan explains his U-turn
On 27 November 2025, Simon Jordan said he had assembled a consortium with £50 million to examine a possible purchase, but he withdrew over the proposed economics of the deal. In his account, meeting the EFL creditor-payment threshold involved paying money to former owner Dejphon Chansiri. Jordan said he would rather accept a points penalty than make that payment, explaining: “I don’t like the idea of having to reward Chansiri.”

Jordan also speculated that this issue was likely behind Ashley’s thinking. That was Jordan’s opinion, not confirmation of Ashley’s motives. His account concerned the earlier potential purchase and should not be confused with the later Arise agreement. SheffieldWednesday.news, 27 November 2025.
What was the EFL stance on a Sheffield United merger?
The evidence establishes that merger reports were discussed in media in November 2025; it does not establish that a formal merger proposal was submitted, approved or rejected by the EFL. The EFL’s general guidance says a takeover is an acquisition of control and that EFL and Independent Football Regulator requirements apply, including the owners’ and directors’ test. The earlier dispute linked the amount returned to creditors with the sporting consequences of leaving administration. Jordan described a 25 pence in the pound creditor-return threshold as part of the issue he objected to. BBC Sport’s March 2026 account also covered the minimum return, EFL insolvency rules and potential sporting restrictions during discussions over the preferred Arise bid. The EFL’s later decision was specific: it said it would not impose the contemplated 15-point deduction following Wednesday’s exit from administration. That outcome should not be recast as a general waiver of the League’s insolvency or ownership requirements. EFL statement, 2 May 2026.
