Sheffield Wednesday is no longer in administration. The EFL confirmed on 2 May 2026 that a sale of the club’s assets to Arise Capital Partners had ended its administration status, and that it would not impose the additional 15-point deduction normally associated with exiting administration. Wednesday entered administration on 24 October 2025, triggering an automatic 12-point deduction; separate proceedings brought the season’s total deductions to 18 points.

What happened to Sheffield Wednesday?

Wednesday entered administration on 24 October 2025. The EFL confirmed that the event triggered an automatic 12-point deduction (EFL statement, 24 October 2025).

On 19 December, the EFL said that administration and separate disciplinary proceedings had resulted in 18 points deducted in the 2025/26 season. The 18-point figure was the combined total at that point, not a replacement for the 12-point administration sanction (EFL statement, 19 December 2025).

On 2 May 2026, the EFL said the administrators had concluded an agreement to transfer the club’s assets to Arise Capital Partners LLC, led by David Storch alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The league said Wednesday had met its requirements and was no longer regarded as being in administration. The EFL Board chose not to impose a further 15-point deduction on exit (EFL statement, 2 May 2026). The joint administrators, BTG, confirmed completion on 5 May and said Wednesday would begin the upcoming season on zero points (BTG completion notice, 5 May 2026).

Why can administration mean more than one points deduction?

An administration deduction and an exit deduction are distinct. The EFL’s automatic 12-point sanction applied when Wednesday entered administration. A separate policy context concerns what happens when a club exits: a government-commissioned 2022 review described the EFL policy as requiring unsecured creditors to receive at least 25 pence in the pound to avoid a 15-point penalty on exit from administration (Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, 2022 review). That general policy did not result in an exit deduction for Wednesday; the EFL Board exercised discretion not to impose it.

Administration can also affect people beyond the club’s owners. The same review identifies charge holders, preferential creditors, football creditors, employees, unsecured creditors, fans and other stakeholders among those affected by insolvency. It describes reliance on owner funding and weaknesses in football’s business model as broader risks, rather than a finding that every club faces the same circumstances.

What happened to Derby County?

Derby County is the clearest recent comparison for which the case details are established here. Derby entered administration in September 2021 while in the Championship. The club received a 12-point administration deduction and a separate nine-point sporting sanction for breaches of profitability and sustainability rules: 21 points in total during 2021/22, according to the club’s history (Derby County club history).

Derby was relegated to League One in April 2022 while still in administration. It exited administration on 1 July 2022 after Clowes Developments (UK) Limited bought the club. The EFL said Derby remained under a registration embargo and could sign players only under a business plan restricting transfer fees, wages and agents’ fees (EFL statement, 1 July 2022).

Club and timing Points deductions Outcome and conditions established by the cited sources
Sheffield Wednesday, administration began 24 October 2025 12 points for administration; 18 points total by 19 December after separate proceedings. No additional 15-point exit deduction was imposed. Assets transferred to Arise Capital Partners; the EFL confirmed Wednesday was out of administration on 2 May 2026. BTG said the club would start the upcoming season on zero points.
Derby County, administration began September 2021 12 points for administration plus nine for separate financial-rule breaches: 21 total in 2021/22. Relegated to League One in April 2022; exited administration on 1 July after a purchase by Clowes Developments. The EFL said a registration embargo and business-plan limits on fees, wages and agents’ fees remained.

Can these be called the “last three” EFL administration cases?

Not reliably on the available official chronology. A Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport impact assessment lists Bolton Wanderers and Bury among clubs entering insolvency proceedings in 2019, Wigan Athletic in 2020, and Derby County in 2021 (DCMS impact assessment, 2024). Because Bolton and Bury are grouped in the same year and the chronology does not establish their exact ordering relative to other cases, it does not support a definitive ranking of the “last three.”

The chronology confirms those clubs’ insolvency years, but it does not establish detailed exits, sporting outcomes or creditor arrangements for Bolton, Bury and Wigan to the same standard as the cited Derby and Wednesday accounts. They should not be treated as interchangeable precedents on the basis of dates alone.
