The Senior Annual Pass costs $20 and the Senior Lifetime Pass costs $80. Both are available to U.S. citizens and residents age 62 or older, and cover eligible entrance and standard day-use fees at participating sites run by six federal agencies. The right choice depends on when and how often you expect to visit fee-charging sites; neither pass automatically covers reservations, camping, or every park-related charge.

Who is eligible for a Senior Pass?

U.S. citizens and residents age 62 or older are eligible for an America the Beautiful Senior Pass. The eligible person is the pass holder; the pass is non-transferable, and the holder must be able to prove age and citizenship or residency when obtaining it. The National Park Service summarizes eligibility on its Senior Pass information page.

A pass cannot be purchased as a gift because the eligible holder must establish eligibility. If you are obtaining one for another person, that person should complete the purchase or be present as required at the issuing location.

How much does the Senior Pass cost, and which type makes sense?

Pass Price Validity Practical consideration
Senior Annual Pass $20 One year Can be upgraded in person to a Senior Lifetime Pass at a participating federal site.
Senior Lifetime Pass $80 For the holder’s lifetime May suit someone expecting eligible visits across multiple years.

Prices and validity are stated by the National Park Service on its Senior Pass page. The cited NPS information does not set a universal break-even number of visits for choosing the lifetime pass over annual passes. Instead, consider how many visits you expect to fee-charging participating sites and whether those visits will fall in one year or span multiple years.

The pass has the most direct entrance-fee value at sites that actually charge an entrance fee. The NPS says fewer than a quarter of its more than 400 sites charge one; many are free to enter. That figure describes NPS sites, not all participating federal recreation locations, and does not calculate an individual’s savings.

What does the pass cover?

The Senior Pass applies to eligible entrance fees and standard amenity recreation fees—generally day-use fees—at participating sites managed by these six federal agencies: the National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. See the NPS Entrance Passes overview for the interagency program.

Who is admitted depends on how a site charges its fees:

  • Per vehicle: the pass admits the holder and passengers in one noncommercial vehicle.
  • Per person: the pass admits the holder and up to three additional adults.
  • Children: children under 16 are admitted free.

These admission terms are described by the NPS on its Senior Pass page. Check a specific site’s fee rules if your group is arriving in multiple vehicles or under a different fee arrangement.

What is not included?

The pass does not make every recreation activity free. It generally does not cover special recreation permit fees or concessioner charges. Some expanded amenity fees—such as certain camping, swimming, boat-launch, or guided-service fees—may be discounted, but the availability and amount vary by site. The NPS outlines these limits in its Senior Pass details.

Reservations and timed-entry requirements are separate from fee coverage. Some parks require a reservation or timed-entry booking, and the NPS advises visitors to check requirements and arrange reservations well ahead of a visit. A Senior Pass should not be treated as a reservation or as a waiver of a reservation requirement; consult the NPS Entrance Passes guidance and the destination’s current information.

How do you get a Senior Pass?

  1. Choose a format. A physical pass can be obtained at participating federal recreation sites or ordered by mail through the USGS store. A digital Senior Pass is available through Recreation.gov and can be used immediately.
  2. Allow for mail delivery if ordering a physical pass. NPS advises allowing up to three weeks for processing and delivery. The order receipt is not a substitute for the pass, so do not rely on it for entry.
  3. Bring eligibility documentation when buying in person. The holder must establish age and U.S. citizenship or residency.

Current purchase and delivery details are on the NPS Senior Pass page.

What if you have an older pass or lose yours?

An older Senior Pass or Golden Age Passport remains valid. If you hold a Golden Age Passport, NPS encourages exchanging it at no charge in person at a park that charges an entrance fee; bring the old passport.
