Self-Checkout vs. Staffed Checkout: Which Is Faster and More Reliable?

Neither checkout type is always faster, and current evidence does not establish a reliability winner. Queue length, basket complexity, and access to help matter.

Neither checkout type is always faster, and the available evidence does not establish that one is more reliable. Your total time depends on the queue, basket, items, and whether you need help. One study in a Polish store found longer average transactions at self-checkout, while Target later reported faster overall transaction times after changing its checkout setup—a result that combined staffed and self-checkout lanes rather than comparing them directly.

Which checkout is faster?

There is no universal speed winner. A useful comparison includes both the wait before reaching a register and the time spent checking out. A short self-checkout line can still take longer if scanning, bagging, or resolving an error is slow; a staffed lane can move quickly when a cashier is processing a full basket efficiently.

What a direct store comparison found

A 2020 study by Jin Kyung Kwak analyzed checkout data from one retail store in Poland. Average self-checkout transactions took longer than staffed-lane transactions even though self-checkout customers bought fewer items. The study abstract says both the time per item and the fixed checkout component were significantly longer at self-checkout, and that transaction duration rose with item count. The abstract does not provide sample size or effect sizes, and one store cannot establish what happens across retailers. Read the study abstract.

Why a store can improve checkout time without proving one lane is faster

Target said it introduced self-checkout limited to 10 items or fewer at most of nearly 2,000 U.S. stores in March 2024. In a May 5, 2025 update, it reported nearly 8% improvement in total transaction times across both self-checkout and traditional staffed lanes, along with a five-point improvement in checkout wait-time NPS and three points in interaction. Target also said a greater share of guests used staffed lanes after the change. These are Target-reported before-and-after operational results; they do not isolate the speed of either lane type or describe a randomized comparison. See Target’s update.

What shoppers mean when they say self-checkout is faster

In a survey commissioned by NCR Voyix, 77% of respondents who preferred self-checkout said speed was a reason, 36% cited shorter lines, and 43% liked bagging their own items. NCR says the blind online survey included 1,044 U.S. consumers in November 2024, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3%. These figures describe stated preferences, not stopwatch comparisons of equivalent shopping trips. Read the NCR Voyix report.

Which checkout is more reliable?

A numerical reliability winner has not been established. The available material documents self-checkout errors but does not provide an equivalent failure rate for staffed lanes. “Reliable” can mean avoiding scan or item-selection mistakes, finishing payment without interruption, getting help promptly, or completing the transaction without a system problem; the evidence does not compare those outcomes lane for lane.

Errors and assistance at self-checkout

A University of Leicester summary of the ECR Retail Loss Self-Checkout Loss Report 2026 describes missed scans, product look-up errors, awkward items, unfamiliar interfaces, and difficult barcodes. It reports missed scans in 1% to 4.8% of self-checkout transactions and product look-up errors in 0.18% to 0.2%. These are self-checkout measures, not a comparison with staffed registers. The summary also notes that retailers can struggle to determine whether a non-scan was accidental or deliberate. Read the University of Leicester summary.

The same summary says on-screen prompts to check or rescan items led customers to correct themselves in more than 80% of cases. It also reports individual retailer results for specific interventions: exit gates were associated with 28% fewer walkaways, personal display monitors reduced losses by 12%, and missed-scan identification technology reduced losses by 9%. These findings do not mean every store uses those measures or that they make self-checkout more reliable than staffed checkout.

What customers value beyond speed

Speed is not the only reason shoppers choose a lane. NCR’s survey found that some self-checkout-preferring respondents valued shorter lines or bagging their own purchases. Separately, a 2021 study based on a UK field survey of 313 shoppers and an Australian online panel of 474 found that perceived staffed-checkout quality had a stronger positive relationship with overall store quality, satisfaction, and loyalty than perceived self-checkout quality. That study measured perceptions, not transaction speed or technical failure rates. Read the 2021 study abstract.

Self Service Kiosk POS Stand - CTA POS Kiosk with CPU & Printer Compartments for Digital Signage Displays TV's & Monitors up to 33 Pounds - for Restaurants, Retail & Business - White - (ADD-SSKPCW)
  • VESA 75mm and 100mm compatible to attach monitor up to 33 lbs.
  • Mini-CPU holder can accommodate a size up to 7.2” width x 7” depth x 1.45” height.
  • Universal printer holder designed for receipt printer up to 6" height x 6" width x 7.6" depth.
  • Heavy duty metal base has pre-drilled holes for permanent mounting.
  • Warranty Guarantee for up to 1 year.
  • For a few straightforward items: Consider self-checkout if its queue is short and the items scan easily.
  • For a full basket: Compare the staffed lane’s queue with the time and effort of scanning and bagging everything yourself.
  • For produce or awkward items: A staffed lane may be more convenient if weighing, look-up menus, or unusual barcodes are likely to interrupt self-checkout.
  • If you may need an age check, payment help, or other assistance: Choose the lane where staff can help promptly; at self-checkout, an intervention can add waiting time.
  • If you prefer handling the process yourself: Self-checkout may suit you even when it is not objectively faster, particularly if you want to bag items your way.

Queue length is only one part of the decision: a line that appears shorter may move more slowly, and a fast-scanning lane may be offset by an assistance delay. Store layout, staffing, basket size, payment, and machine design all affect the outcome.
