To find the lowest cost per unit, divide the price you will actually pay by the package’s net quantity, then compare the results using the same measurement unit. The package with the lowest total price—or the biggest size—isn’t necessarily the best value.
How do you calculate cost per unit?
Unit price is the cost for a standard amount of a product, such as one ounce or 100 milliliters. It puts different package sizes on a common basis. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines unit price as the cost per unit of measure in its Unit Pricing Guide, SP 1181-2025.

Use this formula: unit price = applicable package price ÷ package quantity. USDA MyPlate gives the same calculation as “TOTAL PRICE ÷ SIZE = UNIT PRICE” in its Shop Smart guidance.

- Express every result in the same unit before comparing.
For example, a 12-ounce item priced at $3.00 costs $0.25 per ounce: $3.00 ÷ 12 = $0.25. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a current store price. If one package lists pounds and another lists ounces, convert before comparing: 1 pound equals 16 ounces.

How do you compare grocery prices per ounce?
Compare products that are the same or meaningfully similar, and use the same unit basis for each. A shelf label’s unit price can save you the calculation, but check whether it is expressed per ounce, pound, or another amount before deciding which figure is lower.
Erie County Consumer Protection illustrates the comparison with corn flakes: 14 ounces for $2.52 works out to 18 cents per ounce; 20 ounces for $3.00 is 15 cents per ounce; and 32 ounces for $5.12 is 16 cents per ounce. In that example, the 20-ounce package has the lowest unit price, even though it is not the largest. The figures are examples on the county’s Packages page, not current store prices.

The same page’s bulk example is $1.44 per pound. Dividing by 16 gives 9 cents per ounce. Convert units this way before ranking packages; a price per pound cannot be compared directly with a price per ounce.

No. Package size alone does not determine unit price. The corn-flakes example above shows a middle-sized pack beating the larger one. A UK government example makes the point with orange juice: 600 milliliters at 15.8 pence per 100 milliliters, 1 liter at 20 pence per 100 milliliters, and 1.5 liters at 23.3 pence per 100 milliliters. The smallest package has the lowest unit price in that example. These are UK figures and units from GOV.UK’s consumer guidance, not U.S. prices.

Even when a larger pack does have a lower unit price, that comparison does not establish that unlike products are interchangeable or that your household will use the whole quantity. Consider whether you can store and use the amount before treating a low per-unit figure as a practical saving.
Which price should you use when there is a sale or coupon?
Use the price you are eligible to pay, not automatically the regular shelf price or the most prominent advertised offer. A sale, digital coupon, or loyalty-card price may have conditions. Check them before calculating, including whether enrollment, a minimum purchase, or another requirement applies.

What should you check on the shelf label?
- Product comparability: Compare the same product or products that are meaningfully similar. A lower unit price alone does not prove that different ingredients, quality, or product types are equivalent.
- Measurement basis: Confirm that the label’s unit matches the basis you are using, and convert quantities when needed.
- Applicable price: Check whether the shown figure is regular or conditional on a sale, coupon, or loyalty program.
- Package quantity: Check the net amount and whether you can reasonably use it.
NIST recommends consistent units within like product categories and locating unit prices near total prices. If a unit price is missing or unclear, divide the applicable price by the package quantity yourself. If the label appears inconsistent with the package, ask store staff to clarify the discrepancy.

What if the shelf price and checkout price differ?
Price-discrepancy rules depend on where you shop. For example, Massachusetts General Laws, chapter 94, section 184C, addresses the lowest price in specified grocery price-discrepancy circumstances and disclosure of card and non-card prices. That is a Massachusetts-specific rule, not a nationwide guarantee; see the Massachusetts statute for its scope.
Does a lower unit price always mean better household value?
No. Unit price answers a narrower question: how much the product costs per stated amount. It does not measure whether you like the product, whether it fits your needs, whether you have room to store it, or whether you will use it before it goes to waste. Treat the per-unit comparison as a way to assess price among comparable products, then factor in your household’s actual use.
