If you have already paid, keep your receipt and payment record, ask the store to correct the transaction, and contact your card issuer promptly if the store does not resolve it. The right dispute process depends on your location and whether you paid by credit or debit card.
If you have not paid yet
- Pause the transaction. Call the self-checkout attendant and point to the item on the screen or receipt preview. Ask them to remove or void that line.
- Check the total before paying. Make sure the displayed amount no longer includes the item. If staff cannot correct it at the kiosk, ask them to help complete the transaction another way.
There is no single self-checkout procedure that every retailer is required to use. Ask staff to correct the specific line rather than assuming the machine will automatically reverse it.

If you have already paid
Save the transaction details
Keep the itemized receipt and the payment record, such as the card transaction in your banking app or statement. Note the store location, date and approximate time, and the item description or code shown on the receipt. If useful, photograph the shelf label or product barcode that helps explain the mistake. Keep copies of messages and write down when you spoke with staff and their name, if available. The FTC advises consumers to retain receipts and transaction documents when seeking to resolve a problem (FTC guidance on billing problems).
Ask the store to correct the charge
Contact the customer service desk or store manager. Identify the exact receipt line, say that you did not buy the item, and state the amount charged. Ask the retailer to refund that amount through the original payment method where available, and request a corrected receipt or written confirmation. Retailers set their own in-store correction process; keep a record of the conversation. The FTC notes that many businesses will work with customers to resolve a problem, but that is not a guarantee of a particular outcome (FTC guidance on solving problems with a business).

If the store does not fix it
- Make a written request. Send a concise message to the manager or the retailer’s corporate customer-service team. Include the transaction date, store location, specific item and amount, your earlier contact dates, and a copy of the receipt. Keep a copy of what you send. The FTC’s sample card-dispute letter illustrates how to describe an overcharge or an item you did not buy and why copies of supporting documents matter.
- Contact your card issuer promptly. Ask how to dispute the remaining charge and what evidence or form it requires. Do not wait through a lengthy store process before checking the issuer’s deadline.
- Consider a public consumer office for a persistent problem. For a recurring scanner issue or unresolved complaint, look up the relevant state or local consumer protection office or weights-and-measures authority. USAGov provides a directory of state consumer protection offices. The appropriate agency and remedy depend on where the transaction occurred and what went wrong.
Credit card and debit card disputes are different
For a covered credit-card billing error, the FTC says you generally must send a written dispute within 60 days after the first statement showing the error is sent. Check the issuer’s instructions and submit the dispute in the required way; the deadline is not a reason to delay while waiting for the retailer. Debit-card protections and procedures differ from credit-card billing-error rules. Contact your bank or debit-card issuer as soon as you spot the charge and follow its instructions. In either case, retain the receipt, payment record, and your communications with the store.

Do not assume a scanner-law bonus applies
Scanner-price laws are location-specific and do not necessarily cover a charge for an item that was never purchased. For example, Michigan’s scanner law addresses certain cases where a completed transaction charges more than the displayed price. Michigan’s Attorney General says a qualifying customer must have a receipt and notify the seller within 30 days; the state describes a refund of the price difference and a possible payment of ten times that difference, with a $1 minimum and $5 maximum. That Michigan process is not a nationwide entitlement, and it may not apply when an unwanted item was charged at its correctly displayed price. Check the rules for the place where you shopped; the Michigan Attorney General’s scanner-law guidance explains that state’s requirements.
