Seattle Was No. 20 in Startup Genome’s 2024 Ecosystem Ranking—Here’s the Latest

Seattle’s No. 20 ranking was a 2024 result. Startup Genome later listed the city at No. 15 in 2025 and reported a 10-position rise in 2026, without stating the resulting rank.

Seattle ranked No. 20 in Startup Genome’s 2024 Global Startup Ecosystem Report, down 10 places according to GeekWire’s June 10, 2024 report. That is a historical result, not Seattle’s current standing: Startup Genome’s 2025 report lists the city at No. 15, and its 2026 announcement says Seattle moved up 10 positions without giving the resulting rank in the announcement text.

What did the No. 20 ranking measure?

GeekWire reported that Startup Genome’s 2024 report placed Seattle at No. 20 globally, a 10-place fall. The report assessed startup ecosystems using performance, funding, talent and experience, market reach, and knowledge. As described by GeekWire, its scope covered 4.5 million startups across 300 ecosystems and 55 countries. GeekWire’s June 10, 2024 report is the source for the Seattle result and these details.

The figures offer a snapshot of activity, not a direct measure of the financial health of every Seattle startup or the likely returns for an individual investor. Startup Genome’s ranking is an ecosystem comparison; its position should be read in the context of the report edition and underlying methodology.

What did the 2024 report say about Seattle’s strengths and weak spots?

GeekWire’s account of the 2024 report named AI, big data and analytics, life sciences, and ag-tech/new food as Seattle strengths. It also said Seattle ranked second in the U.S. for AI talent density. These are findings attributed to the 2024 report, not updated measurements for 2026.

The same account reported 10 large exits in the 30 months through the end of 2023, placing Seattle 26th globally on that measure; two of those exits occurred in 2023. It also reported 25 Series A deals in 2023, ranking Seattle 10th among U.S. ecosystems. The report described the ecosystem as being “on a down cycle overall” as Series A deals slowed.

GeekWire connected the lower 2024 standing with slower startup funding than during the preceding boom years, reduced unicorn activity, and fewer founder communities with physical spaces. Those were contemporaneous observations, not a demonstrated explanation for Seattle’s later rankings.

What is Seattle’s latest reported position?

Startup Genome’s official 2025 Global Startup Ecosystem Report lists Seattle at No. 15 in its Top 40 and records a +1 improvement from GSER 2024. Startup Genome’s 2026 report announcement says Seattle moved up 10 positions in the Top 40, crediting the strong AI-Native sub-sector. The announcement text does not state Seattle’s resulting rank, so it does not establish an absolute 2026 position by itself.

The 2026 announcement describes a broader report scope of more than 5.5 million companies across more than 350 entrepreneurial innovation ecosystems. Those scope figures differ from the 2024 figures reported by GeekWire; they should not be treated as a like-for-like comparison of Seattle’s performance.

Why do the reported rank changes appear inconsistent?

GeekWire’s 2024 account says Seattle fell 10 places to No. 20. Startup Genome’s 2025 report, however, lists Seattle at No. 15 and describes its improvement from GSER 2024 as +1. The sources available here do not explain how those movement figures relate to one another.

Rank changes can only be interpreted reliably when the editions’ definitions and comparison bases are clear. Relevant details include the report year, included factors and weights, geographic boundaries, data window, and whether a movement figure is from Startup Genome or a secondary account. Until Startup Genome clarifies the discrepancy, do not read the 2024 and 2025 statements as a clean year-on-year series.
