In the first months of COVID-19, Seattle venture capitalist Dan Levitan and his brothers Richard and Robert formed Prone2Help to get proning cushions to hospitals. The effort began after Richard, an emergency physician volunteering at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, told Dan that staff needed cushions to help make patients lying on their stomachs more comfortable.
How the brothers identified the need
Richard Levitan was volunteering in Bellevue Hospital’s emergency room when he saw a need for cushions to support patients placed in a prone position—on their stomachs. The cushions were intended to improve comfort for non-intubated patients. The May 8, 2020, GeekWire report describes the practical supply effort, not a clinical study measuring treatment outcomes.
What Prone2Help did
The brothers formed Prone2Help, a nonprofit project, and sourced “prone comfort bolsters” from San Diego company EarthLite. Their initial shipment went to two New York hospitals:
- 10 cushions to Bellevue Hospital.
- Five cushions to Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn.
Healthcare organizations could request cushions at no cost, while people who were able could donate to support the project. The brothers were also speaking with other mattress manufacturers, and GeekWire reported that a FedEx arrangement helped reduce shipping costs.

How the brothers divided the work
- Richard Levitan: An emergency physician and airway specialist, he worked on the clinical front line and brought the hospital need to his brothers.
- Robert Levitan: The entrepreneur served as Prone2Help’s executive director. He said, “Richard always seems to find practical solutions to complex problems.”
- Dan Levitan: He handled fundraising. Maveron’s official biography identifies Dan as a co-founder and general partner of the venture-capital firm. Speaking about Richard’s work, Dan said, “I’m just very grateful that he’s had an opportunity to use his skills and hopefully contribute to the development of knowledge beating this terrible disease.”
Richard reflected on the experience: “It’s my first pandemic, but it has made me realize who I love and what I care about.”
What the 2020 report says about the project’s reach
GeekWire reported on May 8, 2020, that Prone2Help had distributed more than 250 cushions to more than 125 hospitals in 30 states. Those are figures from the article’s 2020 snapshot, not current totals or independently validated counts.

The cited reporting establishes the project’s activities and arrangements in May 2020; it does not confirm whether Prone2Help remains operational, whether its donation channel is active, or whether cushions are still available.
