Kadama, a Seattle-area tutoring app, raised a $1.7 million seed round in June 2021, led by Grishin Robotics. At the time, the company credited viral TikTok and Instagram content with helping it attract a large student audience. Its reported app ranking, social reach and revenue growth describe a moment in 2021—not Kadama’s current performance.

What Kadama raised and who invested

GeekWire reported on June 7, 2021, that Kadama raised $1.7 million in seed funding, with Grishin Robotics leading the round. Kadama’s funding announcement also named Alliance of Angels and Ali Habaj as participants. GeekWire reported that Grishin Robotics founder Dmitry Grishin joined Kadama’s board. GeekWire’s report and Kadama’s June 2021 announcement distributed by PR Newswire document the round.

The financing was intended to support product development and hiring. Kadama said it planned to hire software engineers, develop an Android app, add iOS features and expand influencer marketing. GeekWire also reported plans for a Seattle-area headquarters and a team of seven to ten. These were plans announced in 2021; the reports do not establish which were later completed.

How Kadama described its growth in 2021

GeekWire reported three different measures of Kadama’s momentum at the time. The app had reached the number two position in the App Store’s Education category; the company reported 2.5-times month-over-month revenue growth; and its TikTok and Instagram accounts had 2 million followers and 500 million views. Kadama’s release also described half a billion views and called the App Store placement its peak ranking.

Measure What was reported How to interpret it
App Store placement Number two in the Education category, as reported by GeekWire in June 2021; Kadama’s release described it as the app’s peak ranking. A historical category ranking, not evidence of its current position or total downloads.
Social audience 2 million followers across TikTok and Instagram, reported by GeekWire in June 2021. A combined audience figure; the report does not establish unique people across the two platforms.
Social views 500 million TikTok and Instagram views, reported by GeekWire in June 2021; Kadama’s release described half a billion views. A reported view count, not a count of distinct viewers or paying customers.
Revenue momentum 2.5-times month-over-month revenue growth, reported by GeekWire in June 2021. A growth rate for a month-over-month comparison; the report does not provide the underlying revenue amount or establish that the rate continued.

The measures capture different things. A category ranking reflects relative placement in an app-store category; followers and views reflect social reach; revenue growth concerns business activity. Taken together, they show what Kadama and GeekWire highlighted about the company in 2021, but they do not independently establish sustained profitability or later business performance.

What the app offered and how the company developed

Kadama offered a free iOS app connecting students who needed help with tutors. GeekWire reported that the idea began at the University of Washington as a broader multi-services concept before the company focused on education. CEO Amin Shaykho described the appeal of the social content to GeekWire: “As a team of students and recent college graduates, we are shocked to see the level of virality and relatability our brand has towards millions of students.”

The company also introduced Kadama Events, with trivia and gaming tournaments, and Kadama Rewards for students and tutors. These additions suggest Kadama was building features around student engagement alongside its tutoring service; the 2021 coverage does not establish how widely they were used or whether they remain available.

What the funding story does—and does not—show

The announcement is a snapshot of a startup attracting investor capital while reporting strong social attention and revenue growth. It does not reveal the round’s valuation, the investors’ ownership stakes, Kadama’s underlying revenue, or its profitability. Those details cannot be inferred from the $1.7 million funding amount or the growth figures.

The available reporting also does not establish whether Kadama is currently operating, whether its app is still available, what service areas it covers, or its current users, downloads, revenue or social metrics. The 2021 figures should therefore be read as dated claims from GeekWire and Kadama, not as current company statistics. Bellevue College’s August 2023 profile, “From Running Start to Start-Up,” provides later background on Shaykho, but does not update those operating metrics.
