A share price is the market price for an individual trust share. Net asset value (NAV) is the value of the trust’s assets less its liabilities, expressed per share. Because Scottish Mortgage’s shares trade on an exchange, they can sell above NAV at a premium or below NAV at a discount. The dated official snapshot put the share price below its estimated fair NAV, producing the displayed 8.9% discount.
#1 Best Overall
When assessing a discount or premium, compare share price and NAV on a consistent date and basis. An estimate of NAV may not be the final valuation, particularly where holdings are private or difficult to trade. A discount can narrow or widen independently of changes in the underlying portfolio; it does not by itself establish whether a share is cheap or expensive.
Historical performance
The figures below are total returns for periods ending 31 March 2026, reported in the trust’s 2026 annual report. The share-price, NAV and FTSE All-World figures are separate measures; the benchmark provides market context, not a like-for-like security. Past performance is not a guide to future performance.

| Period to 31 March 2026 | Share-price total return | NAV total return | FTSE All-World total return |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 26.8% | 27.4% | 18.0% |
| 3 years | 78.1% | 57.9% | 50.5% |
| 5 years | 7.1% | 12.8% | 68.2% |
| 10 years | 379.7% | 435.2% | 233.9% |
The contrast between the five-year results and the one- and ten-year results shows how much the selected period can change the picture. Total return is more informative than price change alone because it accounts for income as well as changes in value. News, holdings and documents to check
For current company news and portfolio information, use the issuer’s regulatory announcements and dated documents rather than assuming that a historical holding remains in the portfolio. The document index lists an October 2026 factsheet, a valuation dated 31 August 2026, an August 2026 quarterly data pack, the annual report for the year ended March 2026, and a Key Information Document (KID). The factsheet and valuation have different dates and purposes, so check the date attached to each before using its contents.
Rank #3
The issuer describes exposure to overseas securities, emerging markets and private companies, and the use of gearing and derivatives. For a specific current holding, weight or valuation, consult the latest published portfolio documents; the dated information above does not establish today’s portfolio composition.

These are dated disclosures, not a guarantee of future charges, distributions, borrowing levels or investment capacity.

Risks that matter when reading STMZF history
Scottish Mortgage’s results and share price can be affected by several risks at once. Overseas holdings expose returns to currency movements; emerging-market investments can be affected by political, regulatory and liquidity conditions. Private-company shares may be harder to value or sell than listed securities. Gearing can magnify both gains and losses, while derivatives and difficult-to-trade securities can add further risks. The exchange price may also move relative to NAV, and buybacks can affect the share count and market dynamics.
The trust’s investor disclosure says: “The value of their shares, and any income from them, can fall as well as rise and investors may not get back the amount invested.” The issuer also states that the trust is listed on the LSE and is not authorised or regulated by the FCA. Review the official risk disclosures and current documents before making an investment decision.
