Reserve depletion does not mean the program would have no income or that benefits would necessarily disappear. The projection concerns the gap between scheduled benefits and the income expected to be available under the Trustees’ assumptions. The same summary reports that 62.3 million people received OASI benefits at the end of 2025, underscoring how many people rely on the program.

An April 2025 AP-NORC poll found that about 3 in 10 U.S. adults aged 60 or older were not very or not at all confident Social Security benefits would be available when needed. A practical way to assess retirement-income risk
Rather than treating an unverified stock list as a solution, separate the program’s outlook from your own plan:
- Use the right baseline. Treat Trustees projections as estimates under stated assumptions, not as a promised outcome.
- Review your own benefit information. Base personal planning on your eligibility and estimated benefits rather than a general poll or headline.
- Stress-test income. Consider whether your budget would remain workable under different benefit and investment scenarios, without assuming stocks will make up any shortfall.
- Evaluate securities on their own merits. For any independently sourced company list, examine business exposure, revenue and earnings durability, dividend capacity if relevant, balance-sheet strength, valuation, and dependence on Social Security beneficiaries. A retirement-related business alone is not a reason to buy its stock.
