Samsung ranked first in India’s 2023 smartphone market by full-year shipment volume, but it did not lead every measure: Xiaomi topped the fourth quarter in two research firms’ estimates, while Apple led annual revenue. Samsung’s win was narrow, and the estimates vary by market tracker.
What “topped the market” means
The ranking refers to shipments: smartphones sent into distribution channels, the measure used for the cited brand rankings. Shipments are not the same as sell-through—the phones consumers actually buy in a period—and they can be affected by inventory held in the channel. Nor does a shipment lead mean a brand earned the most revenue.
The result is best read as three different contests: Samsung led full-year shipment volume, Xiaomi led Q4 shipment share in Counterpoint and CMR estimates, and Apple led annual smartphone revenue. Those outcomes can coexist because the periods and measures differ.
How close was Samsung’s annual lead?
Research firms independently placed Samsung first for calendar 2023, but their estimates are not identical. Do not combine them into a single market-share calculation: firms use different methodologies and shipment estimates.

The Canalys figures put Samsung about one percentage point ahead of vivo, not in a runaway position. Canalys estimated India’s total smartphone shipments at 148.6 million in 2023, down 2% year over year; Counterpoint estimated approximately 152 million and described the market as flat. The difference reflects separate estimates, not a basis for averaging the totals.
Why Samsung secured the full-year lead
Counterpoint credited Samsung’s Galaxy A series, aggressive offline marketing, a focused premium push and continued strength in 5G devices. The A-series contribution helped Samsung compete for scale across more accessible price bands, while premium Galaxy products gave it a presence higher up the market. The published summary does not quantify how many Samsung shipments came from any particular model or series.

Retail reach also matters in a country where consumers may want to handle a phone before buying. Counterpoint said offline channels accounted for 55% of smartphone sales in 2023, citing consumer preference to see and handle devices. In practical terms, a broad portfolio and visible retail presence can help a brand serve buyers with different budgets and purchase habits; the available market figures do not isolate how much either factor contributed to Samsung’s lead.
Why the quarter-end ranking looked different
Xiaomi’s Q4 lead does not contradict Samsung’s annual result: a brand can finish a year first overall while a rival wins its final quarter. The trackers also reported different Q4 shares, so each estimate should be read on its own terms.

Counterpoint estimated that India’s smartphone market grew 25% year over year in Q4; CMR reported 19% growth. Counterpoint pointed to Xiaomi’s affordable 5G strategy, offline expansion and more streamlined portfolio. Festive offers, discounting, financing and new lower-cost 5G phones also shaped the quarter’s competitive environment.
5G became a mainstream battleground
Both market trackers described a rapid shift toward 5G, although their estimates differ. Counterpoint said 5G phones exceeded 52% of shipments in 2023 and grew 66% year over year. CMR put the 5G share at 65% and growth at 67%. These are firm-specific estimates, not directly interchangeable measurements.

CMR gave Samsung a 23% share of India’s 2023 5G smartphone segment, ahead of vivo at 15% and OnePlus at 13%. That segment result helps explain why Samsung’s 5G position mattered to its annual volume ranking, without establishing that 5G alone caused the overall lead.

Apple led India’s smartphone market by annual revenue in 2023 for the first time, even though Samsung led by units. Counterpoint said Apple shipped more than 10 million phones and benefited from high average selling prices. A smaller number of expensive phones can generate more revenue than a larger number of lower-priced devices, so unit rankings alone do not show which company captured the most market value.

Premium demand was growing, too, but the reported thresholds differ. Counterpoint said phones priced above ₹30,000 grew 64% year over year in 2023; CMR reported 71% growth for phones priced above ₹25,000. Counterpoint also estimated that one in three smartphones was purchased through financing. The thresholds and estimates should not be collapsed into one premium-market growth figure.
For buyers, financing can lower the immediate payment while leaving the total cost dependent on the plan’s duration, interest, fees and any required down payment. For brands, premiumization creates a contest over higher-value sales as well as shipment scale. Apple’s revenue lead made it a significant competitor despite its lower unit position; Samsung’s premium push put it in that contest while its broader range supported volume.
Which rivals put pressure on Samsung?
- vivo: It ranked second annually in the Counterpoint and CMR estimates. Counterpoint reported that vivo held 33% of the ₹30,000–₹45,000 segment, indicating strength in affordable-premium phones.
- Xiaomi: It remained a major volume rival and led Q4 in both Counterpoint and CMR. Its affordable 5G offerings and renewed offline effort helped it challenge Samsung at the end of the year.
- Apple: It led annual revenue and exceeded 10 million shipments, reinforcing its premium-market influence even without the top unit ranking.
- OnePlus: Counterpoint reported 33% annual growth, attributing it to offline expansion and positioning in the ₹30,000–₹45,000 affordable-premium segment.
- Other brands: Counterpoint reported annual growth for Google, Motorola, Lava and Transsion brands, showing that competitive pressure extended beyond the leading names.
What the result says about India’s market
Samsung’s annual lead came in a broadly flat or slightly shrinking market, not during a year of uniform expansion. Counterpoint described weak demand and inventory buildup in the first half, followed by improvement in the second half as 5G upgrades, festive promotions, financing and premiumization supported demand.
The safest conclusion is that Samsung reclaimed the annual volume lead, but the gap was slim and depended on which tracker’s estimates are used. Xiaomi’s Q4 performance, vivo’s annual position and Apple’s revenue leadership show why “market leader” needs a stated metric and period. A shipment crown is useful evidence of scale; it is not, by itself, proof of revenue leadership, profitability or a durable lead.
