Facebook Marketplace Can Use Meta AI to Reply to Buyers—Here’s What Sellers Control

Meta AI can reply to routine Marketplace inquiries using information in a listing, but sellers control setup and should personally confirm anything involving condition, negotiation, or transaction details.

Yes. Meta announced on March 12, 2026, that Facebook Marketplace sellers can enable AI-generated replies to routine buyer questions, especially whether an item is available. Sellers can preview and edit the proposed response during listing creation. The feature uses listing information; it is not a general-purpose sales agent that can safely negotiate, confirm a sale, or settle transaction details.

What Meta AI’s Marketplace replies do

Meta says the feature can prepare and send an auto-reply using information already in a listing, including its description, availability, pickup location, and price. The clearest use case is the familiar “Is this available?” inquiry, a standard message buyers can send through Marketplace. Meta’s announcement describes seller controls to enable, preview, and edit the reply. Facebook’s buyer-messaging help page explains the standard inquiry.

That means there are two distinct steps: Meta AI drafts wording based on listing details, and the seller chooses whether to enable the feature and can review or edit the proposed response during listing creation. Meta’s announcement does not establish that the AI can handle an unrestricted conversation or reliably answer questions whose answers are absent from the listing.

Questions the listing may answer

  • Whether the item is available, if the listing status is current.
  • The listed price and pickup location.
  • Basic item details that the seller has included in the description.

Questions to handle personally

Do not rely on the feature to negotiate a price, make a binding offer, confirm a sale, arrange a pickup time, resolve a payment problem, or answer a question about an unlisted defect or specification. Meta has not documented those capabilities for this auto-reply feature.

  • Privacy by design. Easily disable the camera and microphone, or block the lens with the camera cover.

How to enable the auto-reply during listing creation

Meta’s public announcement describes the control during listing creation, but does not provide a device-by-device guide or guarantee identical labels across Facebook apps and web interfaces. Treat this as the announced workflow, not a universal menu path:

  1. Open Facebook Marketplace and start creating a listing. Facebook’s standard listing instructions say to choose a new listing and then “Item for sale.” See Facebook’s listing-creation help page.
  2. Add the item’s photos and details, including its price, description, availability, and pickup information.
  3. Look for the Meta AI auto-reply option during listing creation and enable it if you want to use it.
  4. Preview the proposed reply. Edit it if it is inaccurate, too broad, or not how you want to represent the item.
  5. Publish the listing with the feature enabled.

If the control is not visible, the available sources do not provide a definitive fix. Rollout, account or regional eligibility, device or app differences, listing category, and the point in the listing workflow may all matter; updating the app is not a guaranteed solution. Meta’s announcement does not clearly establish the feature’s complete geographic, device, or account availability.

Meta Portal TV - Big Screen Smart Video Calling for Group Calls on Your TV
  • Scale up your greatest conversations. Smart video calling on your TV brings your favorite people, larger-than-life, into your living room.
  • Share the room. Perfect for group calls. Meta Portal TV captures your whole room so everyone is in view without jostling for position.
  • Call anyone, anywhere. Use apps like Messenger and WhatsApp to connect with friends and family—even if they don’t have a Meta Portal.
  • A more natural connection. Smart Camera adjusts automatically so you can move freely and stay in frame, while Smart Sound ensures you can be heard clearly.
  • Privacy by design. Easily disable the camera and microphone, or block the lens with the camera cover.

The announced workflow makes use optional at setup. If you do not want automated replies, leave the option disabled. Meta’s public materials do not specify a separate post-publication opt-out path.

Keep the listing accurate before letting AI reply

Because Meta says replies draw on listing information, stale or incomplete details are the main foreseeable risk. That is an operational inference from the described design, not a published Meta test result. Before enabling the feature:

  • Designed for calls on the go. A long-lasting battery and integrated handle make it easy to move from room to room.

  • A more natural connection. Smart Camera adjusts automatically so you can move freely and stay in frame, while Smart Sound ensures you can always be heard.
  • Great sound anywhere. Listen to music with a speaker that can fill any room. Doubles as a portable Bluetooth speaker around the home.
  • Update availability if the item is reserved, pending, or sold.
  • Use a useful pickup area rather than a vague location.
  • Describe material condition issues and included accessories accurately.
  • Make the price current and state whether it is firm if that matters.
  • Remove claims that no longer apply, such as “available,” after agreeing to a sale or accepting a deposit.

Facebook lets sellers mark a listing Available, Pending, or Sold. Its help page says marking an item sold removes it from Marketplace and notifies buyers who messaged about it. See Facebook’s listing-status instructions. After changing a price or status, check the listing and subsequent conversations rather than assuming a previously prepared message has updated.

What buyers should—and should not—infer from a reply

An automated response is not proof that the seller personally read the message, still has the item, has agreed to hold it, or has finalized pickup or payment. Ask directly about condition, defects, measurements, ownership, and timing when those details matter. Confirm the transaction terms with the seller before paying or traveling.

Portal from Facebook. Smart, Hands-Free Video Calling with Alexa Built-in (Gen 1)
  • Move and talk freely with Smart Camera: With Smart Camera, you don’t have to worry about being out of frame. Whether you’re moving around the kitchen, prepping dinner or chasing the kids through the living room, Smart Camera adjusts to follow the action. And as more people enter a room, Smart Camera automatically widens to keep everyone in view, so you don’t miss a moment
  • Private by design: Facebook doesn't listen to, view or keep the contents of your Portal video calls. Calls on Portal are encrypted, so conversations stay between you and those you're calling. You can also completely disable the camera and microphone with a single tap, or block the camera lens with the camera cover provided
  • Connect with friends, even if they don't have Portal: Easily call friends and family on Messenger — calls can be made seamlessly to and from smartphones and tablets. And you can bring up to six other people into a group call
  • Alexa built-in: Portal has Alexa built-in, so you can ask a question, set a timer, add items to your shopping list, control your smart home or more. Just ask
  • Experience more together: With Portal, story time will never be the same. With music, animation and augmented reality effects, Portal lets you become some of your children’s favorite characters as you read along to well-loved stories. And if friends or family also have Portal, you can listen to your favorite music together as if you were in the same room, without delays or feedback

Meta’s March announcement does not clearly say whether buyers see an AI label, whether the seller’s identity is presented as the apparent sender, or whether buyers can opt out of automated replies. Those details are not established by the public announcement, so inspect how a message appears in your own account rather than assuming it is labeled.

Marketplace conversations remain part of the Marketplace messaging workflow, not necessarily a separate Meta AI chat. Sellers can find them through Facebook’s Marketplace inbox and Selling section, or in Messenger; Facebook says sellers can filter messages and group conversations by listing. See Facebook’s Marketplace message help page.

When auto-replies are useful—and when they are not

A reasonable fit

  • You receive many repetitive availability questions.
  • The item has simple, stable details and a straightforward price and pickup arrangement.
  • You can keep the listing current and review the proposed wording before publishing.

Use caution or reply yourself

  • The item’s availability changes quickly or it has multiple variants or quantities.
  • Buyers need nuanced answers about condition, defects, safety, or technical specifications.
  • The sale depends on negotiation, individual buyer screening, a precise appointment, or special delivery or payment terms.
  • The item is high-value or otherwise requires careful, personal confirmation.

A quick reply can create a wrong impression if it repeats outdated information or sounds like a firm promise. Sellers should personally handle follow-up questions that require judgment and confirm any hold, appointment, or transaction agreement themselves.

Other Marketplace AI and seller tools are separate features

Meta’s March 2026 update included several tools beyond message replies. They should not be confused with one another:

  • AI-assisted listing creation: Sellers can upload photos and have Meta AI draft listing details and suggest a price based on similar items in the seller’s area. A suggested price is not a guarantee of market value.
  • Seller profile summaries: Buyers may see an overview of profile information, such as how long someone has been on Facebook and their number of friends, alongside Marketplace activity such as listing history, item categories, and seller ratings. A summary is not identity verification or a guarantee of item quality or transaction safety.
  • Shipping tools: Meta announced options including shipping, prepaid labels, and order tracking through a dashboard. Facebook says shipping and prepaid-label features are not available to all users, so they should not be assumed to be available with every listing. See Facebook’s shipping help page.

On July 24, 2026, Meta announced Seller, a separate app for frequent Marketplace sellers. Meta said it was available through the App Store to U.S. users aged 18 and older; Android testing was underway at announcement. It includes AI-assisted listing creation, bulk listing tools, a unified seller inbox, inventory management, and performance data such as views, clicks, message threads, and sold listings. Meta said existing listings, messages, and selling history sync with Marketplace, and that a web experience is available for sellers who download the app. The announcement does not say the March auto-reply feature is exclusive to Seller. See Meta’s Seller app announcement.
