What the 2024 notice actually announced
Notification RRC/NR/06/2024/Act Apprentice, dated 13 August 2024, advertised 4,096 apprenticeship training slots across Northern Railway under the Apprentices Act, 1961. The notice is not evidence of a 1,679-post recruitment by NCR. The available official information does not establish where that alternative figure came from.
These were apprenticeship training places, not permanent railway vacancies. The notification described slots as provisional and subject to increase or decrease. It set out a process organized by cluster, trade and community, so applicants needed to check the unit and trade details in the original notice.
Is the application still open?
No. Applications opened on 16 August 2024 and closed on 16 September 2024. The notice expected merit display in November 2024, and the RRC Northern Railway website later carried merit/status and document-verification updates. Education and trade qualification
Applicants needed to have passed SSC/Matriculation/10th with at least 50% aggregate marks and passed ITI in the relevant trade. The ITI certificate had to be issued by NCVT or SCVT recognized by the Government of India. Candidates had to possess the required qualifications by the notification date, 13 August 2024.
Age limit for that cycle
Candidates had to be at least 15 and not yet 24 years old as of the closing date, 16 September 2024. The notification described upper-age relaxation of five years for SC/ST candidates, three years for OBC candidates and ten years for persons with disability, as well as separate provisions for ex-servicemen. Eligibility depended on category conditions and supporting documents; consult the original notification for the applicable rules.
How selection worked
There was no written test or viva. After application scrutiny, merit was based on the average of the candidate’s 10th-standard and ITI marks, with equal weight given to each. The merit list was to be prepared cluster-, trade- and community-wise. If candidates tied, the older candidate was preferred; if their dates of birth also matched, preference went to the candidate who passed matriculation earlier.
The application fee was Rs. 100, payable online. The notification exempted SC, ST, PwBD and women candidates from the fee.

Important application conditions
- Applicants were cautioned to match their ITI trade to a cluster or unit with available slots before applying. Unit changes were not allowed.
- Multiple applications could be rejected, so applicants needed to submit the appropriate application rather than apply repeatedly.
- Selected candidates had to enter into a contract of apprenticeship training. The training period and stipend were to follow applicable rules.
Did apprenticeship guarantee a railway job?
No. Completing training did not create a right to absorption into Railway service, and the employer was not obligated to offer a job afterward. The notification states: “Imparting Training in Railway will not confer any right to the candidates for their absorption in Railway after successful completion of training.”

This 2024 application is closed. Anyone looking for a current opportunity should use the official RRC Northern Railway site and verify the recruiting zone, notice number, dates, eligibility cutoff, trade and unit vacancies, selection method and fee in the new notification. Do not assume a later notice has the same conditions or that a headline’s post count matches the official announcement.
