Rivian’s first publicly reported grant cohort comprised 41 nonprofits receiving just over $10 million in total, according to TechCrunch’s September 2024 report. The grants marked a public step for a foundation Rivian had promised to establish; the foundation now reports more than $20 million in cumulative giving since its establishment in 2023. Those figures describe different points in time, not a revised total for the original grants.
What Rivian announced in September 2024
Rivian published its foundation launch announcement on September 23, 2024. The following day, TechCrunch reported that the first public roster covered 41 organizations and just over $10 million in grants. TechCrunch identified a $2 million award to The Nature Conservancy as the cohort’s largest and reported a $1 million award to the Ocean Resilience and Climate Alliance.

The recipient counts and award amounts above are TechCrunch’s account of the initial cohort. They should not be confused with the foundation’s later cumulative giving total or treated as a list of all awards made since launch. TechCrunch’s September 24, 2024 report covers the announcement.
Why the foundation was described as long-promised
Rivian said it dedicated 1% of its equity at the time of its November 2021 initial public offering to establish a philanthropic platform. The company’s September 2024 announcement described the Rivian Foundation as an independent 501(c)(3) private foundation, legally separate from Rivian. The foundation’s current site dates its establishment to 2023. These milestones distinguish the earlier equity commitment from the later operating foundation; the pledge does not mean the foundation was already making grants in its present form in 2021.

Rivian’s launch announcement framed the work around “Safeguarding a Healthy Planet” and “Advancing a Better Energy Future for All.” Its named focus areas included healthy lands and waters, equitable access to nature, natural climate solutions, clean energy equity, and addressing the sourcing of minerals needed for the energy transition. Rivian’s September 23, 2024 announcement describes the initial structure and priorities.
How much the foundation says it has given since then
The Rivian Foundation’s homepage currently reports more than $20 million donated to more than 60 nonprofits since its establishment in 2023, and says its grantmaking focuses on the United States and Canada. That is a later cumulative figure, not the size of the September 2024 cohort. How the foundation describes its grantmaking
In a May 6, 2026 interview, foundation leaders described three broad types of support: local general operating grants, program-specific awards, and grants supporting organizations that acquire land or property rights for conservation. They characterized the annual mix as approximately 30% local general operating support, 55% programmatic grants, and 15% land or property-rights purchases. These approximate proportions are the foundation leadership’s description, not an external audit of its grant portfolio.

As one program example, leaders cited support for GRID Alternatives rooftop solar intended to serve 900 homes and 10 community centers. Those are intended beneficiaries described in the interview, not independently confirmed completed installations. The same interview says the foundation has its own board, names RJ Scaringe, Anisa Kamadoli Costa, Rose Marcario, and Ed Norton as board members, and identifies Heath Nero as executive director. It describes a process in which the executive director recommends grants for board approval. Rivian’s May 6, 2026 interview gives the leadership account of governance and grantmaking.

Examples from the later grant record
The official grantee database shows awards made after the initial public cohort. For example, listings include a $200,000, one-year award to RESOLVE in April 2026 for model restoration projects related to legacy mine waste; a $175,000, two-year award to Trout Unlimited in Washington in April 2026 for abandoned Bodie Mine remediation; and $60,000 two-year awards to Urban Rivers in Illinois in August 2026. These are later individual awards, not components of the September 2024 total.
The database includes recipient, amount, duration, geography, award date, and grant description for its listings, making it possible to distinguish a local operating award from a grant tied to a specific project. The foundation’s grantee database provides the award records.
