That means there is not yet enough confirmed detail to compare timetables or predict a fare response. Here is what is known—and how regional airfare caps differ from ordinary sale fares.
What is confirmed about Rex’s new Perth flights?
The The West Australian article identifies Rex’s appeal to West Australians to support new Perth flights, but its accessible text does not specify routes, frequencies, start dates or booking conditions. Those details cannot be confirmed from the available announcement, so it is not possible to say which travellers could use the flights or compare them with existing services.
The page’s image caption attributes the word “exploded” to Rex’s John Sharp in reference to bookings during a recent sale. It gives no booking count and is not a complete quote, so it does not establish the scale or duration of demand.
Would the flights trigger an airfare war?
More competition can give travellers another option, but the available information does not confirm a Qantas or Virgin response, or show that either airline has cut fares because of Rex’s announcement. The national market figures provide context, not a forecast for any particular Perth route.

The ACCC’s September 2026 report says that, in July 2026, Qantas Group and Virgin Australia together carried 98.5% of domestic passengers, while Rex carried 1.5%. Qantas accounted for 35.9% and Jetstar for 29.3%. These are national passenger shares, not market shares on the unspecified routes in Rex’s appeal. The report also counted 149 domestic routes in July—10 fewer than a year earlier. It recorded two additions over that period, Adelaide–Avalon and Newcastle–Perth; the headline alone does not establish that Rex’s “new Perth flights” refer to Newcastle–Perth. How WA’s regional airfare caps work
Western Australia’s Regional Airfare Zone Cap scheme is a separate resident benefit, not a general price limit on every flight to Perth and not proof of the fare for Rex’s announced services. For travel from 1 July 2026, the government lists the following one-way caps:

These are government scheme caps, not guaranteed fares on every date or route. The scheme has eligibility rules and participating-airline conditions. Before relying on a capped fare, check whether the route is listed, whether a return ticket is required, the annual trip limit and the airline’s fare conditions. Those were date-specific, availability-dependent listings, not stable prices and not confirmation that these are the “new Perth flights” mentioned in the headline. What to check before booking
- Confirm the route, operating dates and flight frequency on the airline’s booking page; the accessible announcement does not establish those details.
- Compare the fare for your travel dates and review baggage, seat, change and refund conditions rather than comparing headline prices alone.
- If you are considering a regional airfare cap, check eligibility, participating route, return-ticket rules and annual trip limit separately from ordinary promotional fares.
- Look for a published timetable or booking availability before changing plans; a call for support does not itself confirm that a particular service is operating.
