In December of that year, the company said it was leaving game rentals and sales; reports described used Xbox One and PlayStation 4 games, along with some Nintendo Switch titles, for sale at local kiosks. The inventory and prices depended on the kiosk and title, and Redbox is not a current place to buy these games.
What Redbox announced in December 2019
Redbox was ending video-game rentals and clearing its used game inventory. Jon Fingas reported in Engadget on December 10, 2019 that a Redbox spokesperson described the move as “permanently transitioning out of the games business.”

The timing was reported inconsistently: the spokesperson told The Verge that purchases would continue “through the end of the year,” while Redbox’s public statement said sales would end “early next year,” according to Engadget. The reports establish a 2019 wind-down, not a continuing retail program.
Which games and platforms were included?
Contemporary reports identified used physical games for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and also reported Nintendo Switch titles. The iMore report on the clearance described buying through a local Redbox kiosk. That does not mean every kiosk carried every platform or title: the sale was limited to stock available at a particular location.

What did Redbox games cost?
Published examples varied by title and report. They are snapshots of particular listings during the 2019 clearance, not a complete price list or a uniform price for every game.

Death Stranding appears at two different prices in these reports. The available reporting does not establish why the listings differed, so neither figure should be treated as a definitive price for the game throughout the sale. The examples also do not establish an overall discount percentage: a matching original price and sale listing would be needed to calculate one.

Can you still buy games from Redbox?
No. The kiosk clearance ended in 2019, and it was tied to existing local inventory rather than an ongoing Redbox game store. Later, on August 14, 2024, Ars Technica reported that Redbox’s parent, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, had moved from Chapter 11 to Chapter 7 proceedings and that the Redbox app was no longer working normally across platforms. That later reporting is further context for why Redbox should not be treated as a current shopping route; it does not change the details of the 2019 game sale.

For a physical copy, compare current listings from retailers or resellers by exact title and platform. For used games, check the seller’s description of disc or cartridge condition, included items, return policy, and total price before buying. A rental service is a separate option; whether one is practical depends on current service availability, the titles and platforms offered, and the cost and terms of its subscription. The reports about Redbox’s clearance do not establish current stock or terms for any retailer, reseller, or rental service.
