How to Redeem Credit Card Rewards for a Statement Credit

Redeem rewards through your issuer’s app or website if statement credit is available. The credit lowers your balance, but you still must make the minimum payment by its due date.

If your card offers statement-credit redemptions, sign in to the issuer’s app or website, open its rewards section, choose statement credit, select an available amount, and confirm. The credit lowers your card balance—but it does not count as your minimum payment. Keep paying at least the minimum due by the due date.

How to redeem rewards for a statement credit

  1. Sign in to your card account. Use the issuer’s official app or website and select the card whose rewards you want to redeem.
  2. Open the rewards area. Look for a section labeled Rewards, Rewards & Benefits, or Redeem. Names and layouts vary by issuer and card.
  3. Choose statement credit. Select it from the redemption options if it is available for your account.
  4. Select an amount and review the terms. Check the amount of rewards required, any minimum, and the account or purchase eligibility rules shown before confirming.
  5. Confirm and verify the transaction. Save or review the confirmation, then check account activity for the credit. Posting time depends on the issuer and program.

Chase says its statement-credit redemptions are initiated through its online portal or app and usually appear within a few business days; that is Chase guidance, not a timing guarantee for other issuers. Chase’s redemption guidance describes the process. American Express says eligible Cash Back Card Reward Dollars can be redeemed online, in the Amex app, or by phone. Exact channels and options depend on the card.

What a statement credit does—and what it does not do

A statement credit is posted to your card account and reduces the balance. It is not a payment you make toward the bill, so it does not satisfy the required minimum payment. Pay at least the minimum due by the due date even if a rewards credit is pending or has already appeared. Chase explains how statement credits affect a balance, and its rewards guidance also says cardholders remain responsible for the minimum monthly payment.

Do not assume that a credit posted after a statement closes changes the payment due or fulfills your payment obligation. For the handling of a particular account, follow the statement and card agreement.

Check your card’s rules before redeeming

Availability, redemption value, minimum amount, eligible account status, and posting time differ by issuer and card. Review the current rewards terms and the redemption screen before confirming. Pay particular attention to:

  • Minimums and eligible accounts: Some programs set a minimum redemption or require the account to meet specified conditions.
  • Expiration and inactivity: Rewards may expire under the card’s terms or when an account is inactive.
  • Eligible purchases: Some programs limit which transactions qualify for rewards or a credit.
  • Timing: Issuer estimates are not universal guarantees; check the terms shown for your card.

For example, American Express says eligible Cash Back Card Reward Dollars can be redeemed for statement credits with no minimum, and that the credit applies to the next billing cycle. Those terms refer to the described Cash Back Card Reward Dollars program, not every Amex points product. Amex also says Reward Dollars do not expire while the Card Account is not canceled or past due. Its eligible-purchase definition excludes categories including fees and interest, balance transfers, cash advances, gift cards, and person-to-person transactions. See American Express’s Cash Back Rewards terms for the program details.

Compare statement credit with your other redemption choices

A statement credit is convenient, but it is not automatically the best-value option. Compare the actual dollar value you receive per point or reward unit and consider whether you want to reduce the card balance or receive usable cash by deposit or check. Also weigh minimums, timing, expiration rules, and whether a travel, gift-card, or retailer option is useful to you.

Options vary by program. Citi’s general cash-back guidance lists examples such as statement credits, direct deposits, checks, gift cards, and participating retailers; minimums and expiration rules depend on the card terms. Chase likewise notes that redemption choices and value vary by card. Check your own program rather than assuming a universal points-to-dollars rate. See Citi’s cash-back overview, Chase’s redemption guidance, and Chase’s answer about paying a bill with reward points.
