There is no documented single destination for every Redbox kiosk. Some have been recycled: CoolSys said it had removed and recycled more than 4,700 nationwide by February 11, 2025. An auction of the remaining machines was reported as part of the company’s liquidation plan in July 2024, while at least one retailer asked the bankruptcy court for permission to remove and dispose of kiosks left on its properties. Those accounts describe different routes, not a complete national tally.
Why Redbox kiosks were left behind
Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment and its debtor affiliates filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on June 29, 2024. The cases converted to Chapter 7 liquidation effective July 10, and an interim Chapter 7 trustee was appointed the next day. A court filing described Redbox Automated Retail as operating approximately 24,000 DVD rental kiosks across the United States at the time of the filing. The bankruptcy case filings
The shutdown left machines at retail locations that had hosted them. In a June 29, 2024 declaration, the debtors said they had been unable to secure a working-capital loan, which hampered their ability to pay for and obtain new content. They also said kiosk rental results fell short of management’s expectations and that cash flow and working capital became insufficient. These are the debtors’ stated explanations in a court declaration, not independent findings about the causes of the collapse. Debtor declaration
What happened to the kiosks
| Route | What is documented | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Recycling and removal | CoolSys said that by February 11, 2025, it had removed and recycled more than 4,700 kiosks nationwide. | This is the company’s reported service count, not a total for all Redbox machines. |
| Retailer removal and disposal | EG Retail (America) told the bankruptcy court that kiosks remained at more than 200 of its locations after it terminated its agreement. It asked to remove and dispose of them if the trustee did not collect them within seven days of an order. | The motion documents the retailer’s request, not the court’s decision or what ultimately happened to each machine. |
| Auction | Next TV reported in July 2024 that the remaining kiosks would be closed and sold at auction following the Chapter 7 conversion. | The report does not establish that every kiosk was auctioned, identify buyers, or say whether purchased machines were reused, dismantled, or recycled. |
Recycling: a documented but partial count
CoolSys announced a removal and recycling service for retailers after Redbox’s closure. It said its work covers electronics, metal, and plastic, and that refrigerants in outdoor units are handled under applicable local, state, and federal requirements. The company also said its process includes securely disconnecting kiosks and destroying customer information that may be stored in them. These details describe CoolSys’s own service and procedures, not necessarily every removal performed by other parties. CoolSys announcement, February 11, 2025

The company’s chief executive officer and president, Rich Wyckoff, described the closure as “a significant logistical challenge for retailers who need to remove and recycle these kiosks.” His comment appeared in CoolSys’s announcement about its removal service.
Retailer requests: not proof of a nationwide practice
EG Retail (America) said kiosks remained at more than 200 of its locations after it ended its agreement with Redbox and sought their removal. Its court motion asked for permission to remove and dispose of the machines if the trustee did not collect them within seven days of an order. That filing shows a retailer dealing with stranded equipment; it does not establish that other retailers followed the same process or what happened at EG America’s locations. Auction: a reported plan, not a final inventory
In July 2024, Next TV reported that the remaining kiosks were expected to close and be sold at auction as part of liquidation. That is evidence of a plan reported at the time, not confirmation of a completed sale of every unit. The report does not identify final buyers or trace machines after a sale. The available public accounts do not provide a way to trace a particular machine from a former store to its final destination. They also do not establish a comprehensive count of kiosks auctioned, recycled, or otherwise removed. A store-specific statement or filing would be needed to confirm the fate of a local unit.
