The airline announced three weekly flights on each route aboard Airbus A330s. Because schedules can change, check Qantas for availability and timings on your specific travel dates.
What Qantas announced—and when the flights began
In May 2025, Qantas announced new non-stop services from Perth to Johannesburg and Auckland, both due to start in December 2025. Western Australia’s government later specified launch dates of 7 December for Johannesburg and 8 December for Auckland. The government and Qantas subsequently reported that the services had launched. Qantas’s announcement and the Western Australian government announcement provide the original details; the government’s launch report confirms the services were operating.
That launch confirmation establishes that the routes began, not that a flight operates on every date or remains available to book now. For a trip, check the Qantas booking search or route information for your travel dates rather than treating the announced frequency as a guaranteed current timetable.
Route details at a glance
| Route | Launch | Frequency and aircraft announced | Approximate flight time | Onward connections highlighted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Perth–Johannesburg | 7 December 2025 | Three weekly services on an Airbus A330 | About 11 hours 15 minutes, as reported by Qantas in December 2025 | Qantas described possible onward connections to cities such as Cape Town through Airlink; availability depends on itinerary and date. |
| Perth–Auckland | 8 December 2025 | Three weekly services on an Airbus A330 | About 6 hours 45 minutes, according to Qantas’s route page | Qantas highlighted a possible one-stop itinerary to New York via Auckland; it is not a guaranteed same-day connection. |
The dates and announced weekly frequency are from the Western Australian government’s May 2025 announcement; Qantas later confirmed launch in its Johannesburg report and the government’s December 2025 report. The Johannesburg duration is Qantas’s approximate published figure, not a promise for every itinerary. For Auckland, Qantas’s route page lists approximately 6 hours 45 minutes and Monday, Wednesday and Saturday flights from 8 December 2025; check the page and booking results for the dates you intend to fly.

Aircraft and announced cabin
Qantas said both routes would use Airbus A330 aircraft, with an announced cabin configuration of 27 business-class suites and 224 economy seats. These are the configuration details in the May 2025 announcement, not a guarantee that every flight or date will use the same aircraft or cabin layout. Qantas Agency Connect’s announcement contains the stated configuration.
What the capacity estimate does—and does not—mean
Western Australia’s government estimated that each route would add nearly 40,000 inbound seats to the state annually. That was an expected capacity figure in the 2025 announcement, not a count of passengers who travelled, a measure of visitor spending, or evidence that the forecast was achieved. The announcement also does not establish current fares, baggage allowances, or booking availability.

How to assess a booking
Compare flights for the same dates and fare conditions. The route announcements do not provide a current like-for-like fare comparison, and the available Auckland schedule listing does not establish a matching date-specific timetable for Johannesburg. Before booking, check:
- Whether the route operates on your intended travel date and the departure and arrival times shown for that itinerary.
- Total journey time, including any onward connection and time between flights.
- The fare conditions and cabin offered for the itinerary you are considering.
- Whether an onward connection is actually offered and suitable on your date; network possibilities do not guarantee a particular connection.
Onward travel mentioned by Qantas
Qantas presented Auckland as a possible one-stop connection for travel to New York and Johannesburg as a gateway to onward cities such as Cape Town through its Airlink partnership. PerthNow reported Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace describing the New York option via Auckland on QF3 and the Airlink connection to Cape Town. These are descriptions of network possibilities, not confirmation that every connection is available on every date. PerthNow’s report reproduces Wallace’s comments.
