A senior Post Office employee was suspended in October 2024 while the company investigated allegations that they had instructed staff to destroy or conceal material that could be relevant to the Horizon IT Inquiry. The allegation was not a finding of wrongdoing. The sources reviewed do not identify the employee or establish the final police, disciplinary or employment outcome.
What was alleged?
The allegation concerned material potentially relevant to the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry, the statutory public inquiry examining the Horizon scandal. Computer Weekly reported that then Post Office company secretary Rachel Scarrabelotti described the matter in her witness statement as “allegations that a senior Post Office member of staff had instructed their team to destroy or conceal material of possible interest to the inquiry, and that the same individual had engaged in inappropriate behaviour”. The wording matters: the reported conduct was under investigation, not proved. The sources do not establish that documents were actually destroyed or concealed, or how many may have been affected.
How did the inquiry and police become involved?
The Post Office’s internal investigation was known as Project Acer. The inquiry’s evidence index lists an “Ad Hoc A&CI Board Report” dated 1 August 2024, associated with a hearing on 2 October 2024. The inquiry evidence index provides the document and hearing context.

As reported by Computer Weekly, the inquiry notified the Metropolitan Police that there might have been an offence under the Inquiries Act or an attempt to pervert the course of justice. That was a notification of a possible offence, not a charge, prosecution or verdict. The Post Office was reported to be collating, analysing and passing material to police. What is known about the files and other allegations?
Computer Weekly reported that an internal document referred to 2,000 hardcopy files police were seeking to understand in connection with the allegation. That figure is not a count of files proved to have been destroyed or concealed. The sources reviewed do not provide a verified number of documents actually destroyed.

The same report described a separate allegation of racial discrimination toward South Asian subpostmasters and Post Office staff. It said the internal document recorded insufficient evidence to support that allegation. This was distinct from the evidence-destruction allegation and should not be treated as a finding about it. Was the employee named, and what happened to them?
The sources reviewed do not name the employee. A separate Computer Weekly report published on 21 October 2024 said the Post Office had allowed the employee to return to work while the police investigation continued. The company declined to comment on individual employment matters, according to that report. Does a later police update resolve the allegation?
No specific outcome for the Project Acer allegation is established by the sources reviewed. A National Police Chiefs’ Council update in May 2026 described Operation Olympos, the wider police investigation into the Horizon scandal. It said detectives held eight million documents and had completed interviews under caution with 13 of the 53 people then under investigation. Those figures concern Operation Olympos overall, not Project Acer or this individual allegation, and do not establish a result in this case. See the NPCC update.
