Qantas’s first two Airbus A321XLR route pairs were Sydney–Melbourne and Sydney–Perth. The aircraft began their inaugural commercial services on September 25, 2025. Qantas has since listed additional destinations for the type, so those launch routes are not its only A321XLR services.
Which routes did Qantas launch first?
The first two A321XLRs entered commercial service on:
- Sydney–Melbourne
- Sydney–Perth
Qantas announced the inaugural services on September 25, 2025. Its first aircraft was Great Ocean Road (registration VH-OGA); the second was Outback Way (VH-OGB). Qantas’s launch announcement identifies the aircraft and routes.
When did Qantas receive its first A321XLR?
Qantas received its first A321XLR in June 2025. Airbus’s June 30, 2025 delivery release says the aircraft flew to Sydney with one crew-rest stop in Bangkok. Airbus described the first aircraft’s cabin as 20 Business seats and 177 main-cabin seats. Airbus’s delivery announcement also says Qantas intended to begin with domestic services.

Where does Qantas fly the A321XLR now?
Qantas’s current fleet page lists Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth among A321XLR destinations. It also says the newest A321XLR is due to begin international Brisbane–Manila flights from October 2026. That planned route is a later expansion, not one of the original two launch pairs. Qantas’s fleet page is the airline’s current reference for destinations and aircraft details.
How can you check whether a particular flight uses an A321XLR?
Check the aircraft shown for your exact flight and travel date in Qantas’s booking or itinerary details. A route listing does not guarantee that every departure uses the A321XLR: Qantas says aircraft can change at short notice and that not all flights on listed routes are exclusively operated by the type.

What should passengers know about the cabin?
Seat counts vary across Qantas’s A321XLR fleet. Airbus reported 20 Business and 177 main-cabin seats for the first delivered aircraft. Qantas’s fleet page lists both a 197-seat layout (20 Business, 177 Economy) and a 200-seat layout (20 Business, 180 Economy). Check the seat map for the specific flight rather than assuming every aircraft has the same configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the aircraft’s range and other advertised features?
Airbus states a typical-service maximum range of 4,700 nautical miles (8,700 kilometres); Qantas lists 8,700 kilometres (4,700 nautical miles) with full payload. These are manufacturer and airline specifications, not independent results from a particular route. Airbus also says the aircraft offers 30% lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions than previous-generation competitor aircraft; the cited release does not provide an independent route-level measurement. Qantas says the A321XLR has 60% more overhead-locker bag capacity than its Boeing 737, an airline comparison claim.
